Recruiting Girls

Post by blueblood »

Recruiting is a marketing and sales job. You need to start at the lowest level and build a base. The bigger your base, the more you sell.

My advice for increasing girls #'s:

You need to offer an all-girls program beginning at U-6 to U-8. Girls are more apt to play than having to skate on boys teams. When I asked my daughter if she wanted to play hockey, she said no.

Her reason: because she could play with other girls her age and not be the only girl on a mite boys hockey team.

Our association has an all-girls jamboree in the pre-season. High school teams and Gophers attend. It's a party-like atmosphere with snacks, drinks and contests.

Build it and they will come......

I know this thread is old but I thought I'd comment anyway.

I just finished up a free girls intro to hockey program. It has helped our girls program in the past so it was time to do it again. I got ice for three consecutive nights. We have collected used equipment during the course of the last hockey season and use this to loan to the participants. We advertise by handing out flyers at parades, at soccer and softball games, and posting flyers around other places where 7-11 year old girls are likely to be found. We also placed an ad in the youth page of our local paper. To assist me on the ice I had one local girl that will be playing D-I this fall, a couple of high school girls, three girls that "graduated" from this program about two years ago. Tonight I brought out members of last season's 14U team. We focus on fun and games while learning to skate and stickhandle. I really am not trying to teach much beyond the very basics. The idea is to keep them smiling and moving. After tonight's final ice we had a pizza party and gave them information regarding the fall hockey school and how to get registered for the winter hockey season. As best I can tell, 90% of them want to continue playing. Typically we have retained 70% so we'll see when registration day arrives.

Very nice. And, were there 6 of them, or 26?

We had a dozen. The last time we did this it was 50. I don't know if the economy has some parents afraid that their daughter would try it and like it or if we need to get the word out better and sooner than we did. The first week of August is also not an ideal time since many families are trying to get in a vacation or another long weekend at the lake.
