Ok I'll say it.

I watched both Sat and Sun and wasn't impressed. There were at least 30 players who wouldn't make some high school teams. There were at least 10 who wouldn't make a high school JV team. USA Hockey Women's Olympic Team Tryout Participants:
The tryouts are fast approaching and USA Hockey reminds you to register for the 2009-10 hockey season at www.usahockeyregistration.com prior to arriving for your tryout. Once regisitered, copy your confirmation number and enter it in the event registration online form, accessible by clicking here. You MUST enter your confirmation number in that form for USA Hockey to confirm your registration. To try out you must be USA Hockey registered prior to May 15.
Upon arrival to the 2010 Open Olympic tryout you must check in at the registration desk to get your assigned USA Hockey jersey number and color. This is your jersey for the weekend. Attached you will find the rosters and group team and ice time you have been assigned as well as directions to the rinks. Please show up on time and be ready to compete when you hit the ice. I would recommend that you warm-up off the ice. Each session will consist of a 5 minute warm-up and three 15 minute (stopped time) period games. All goalies will be required to show up for the goalie session on Saturday. Some players will be released after Saturday evaluation.
Good Luck and we will see you in a few weeks.

The Minnesota Girls looked great. My daughter enjoyed it and was a little eye opening. After talking to a few of the girls from out of town. She now realizes how great Minnesota hockey is. Some of these girls from out of town have to travel great distances to play another team. Some of these girls could not believe we have over 120 Girls high School teams in our state. It really wowed them. Also, I did not see the Curtis girl play. she was a no show.

I was there watching a friends daughter and from what I seen the Minnesota girls were much faster than the rest (MUCH FASTER!!!) especially with the first couple strides. Something else that I noticed, which is a testiment to how quickly the women's game is changing, the younger High schoolers were better than many of the older college players. Over all there were 2 or 3 players that really looked good, a large group clumped in the middle and about 10 that had no business being out there.

I think Curtis played for the JR Whitecaps Blue in the Blues Tourney so was at the rink but not in tryout.

Great that there is press for a player and the sport, but ya have to laugh at the way it is written. Obviously someone did not do any research, and someone else wasn't too forthcoming about the "invitation" process.

Actually . . . . . there were invitations sent out . . . . maybe you just didn't know about them Hux. I know of more than one girl that received an "invitation." I don't know why they were sent because it was supposed to be an open tryout, but there were in fact "invitations" sent out. I saw one. So please don't try to disparage this girl by saying she wasn't forthcoming. She was being honest. The letter I saw was signed by Michelle Amidon.

My friends daughter got an invite, then when she didn't sign up right away she got a follow up phone call. I guess I just assumed everyone there was invited.

Well, I stand corrected. As I understood it, it was an open tryout for the first 100 players who signed up..with the "invitations" coming after the sign-up. It looks like the invites were sent to help ensure a high caliber turnout for the tryouts.

It seemed a lot of the Minnesota players were either fhit members or thoroughbreds players. Not sure if there was a connection. I talked with a lot of parents at the Blues tourney where many top players were playing and no one had heard of this tryout or been invited.

Interesting that,

Players like Alex Nelson, Becky Kortum, Komarek, Martinson Zrust, Romotowski, etc etc. wouldn't be invited.

It may be that with a well developed NDP selection process that USAH believed that our best MN players already had the exposure and adequate "look" via that process??? I can't say, but my feeling always was that the "open" tryout was an opportunity for an "overlooked" player, or for a player to prove something if they hadn't advanced deep (or at all) into the NDP process, or it was an opportunity for players that came from areas with less developed NDP programs (if any) to get that "look"???

After looking deeper into this, I found that letters were sent out to promote the event to some players who are registered with USA Hockey and have been identified as potentially decent players. The process was open to the first 100 players who signed up and the letters were more or less sent out to make some of the players who are on the edge aware of the opportunity to try out that was available. It was an invitation to sign up, kind of like the being pre approved to apply for a credit card.

Interesting... But makes sense I guess - especially if sent to those that may not have the large amount of opportunities that we have here in MN to be "seen" by the USA H folks...
