Not a Mr. Tournament award.

Good player in Leddy who deserves it... but Hanowski also did alot with his overall career.
I agree that it should be over the course of a career, but you have to remember that the state tournament is when everyone is watching. People are going to see your skills and their decisions are heavily influenced by what they see right now.
I have said this before, but voting for Mr. Hockey takes place before the State tournament. So their play this past weekend had no effect on the outcome.
Exactly. The State Tournament does not have anything to do with who is selected Mr. Hockey.

Yes. He at least had to play Holy Angels for one. Probably played more AA schools than your favorite Hanowski did too.

Maybe the fact that the Mr. Hockey award goes to the best all around player has something to do with it? Nick Leddy won this award because he is a great two way player; a shut down defenseman and a huge offensive threat. Ben Hanowski did not win this award because he is a one way player. He does not back check and rarely skates hard unless he has the puck. That is not taking away from the 400+ points he put up, that is a remarkable feat, but they definitely got the right guy.

At least 10 of the previous winners didn't play in the State Tournament.

Careful on that one. If they are getting the best players what's the problem there?

Hanowski will win the AP player of the year. Great honor that says you were the best high school player. The Mr. Hockey award has many people voting on a player's potential at the next two levels.

Congrats to Nick Leddy, he is very deserving of this award. He is a great two way player. I can think that he would be the best defensman on the gophers right now. good speed, hands, vision and shot.

I definitely think the gophs get the better recruits. If you had a choice between SCSU or the U I bet about 90% of the players would pick the U. It has nothing to do with where your going to school.

I think the gophers over-recruit. Look at how many players they have going to play for them. How many of them will actually get the chance to?

Let me just start by saying that I am not arguing the choice of Leddy over Hanowski.
But the award should not just be given to AA players. If they did this great players in A would be overlooked and punished for where their parents choose to live or could find work. And even if they moved to a AA school then there gets to be a giant argument over recruiting which as we all know gets to be quite a lengthy dicsussion on this board. I believe that there have been single A players more deserving of the award and have not gotten it because of favoritism to AA players, but Hanoswki is not one of them. The best player in the state deserves the award. It should make no difference where they play their highschool hockey at. Congrats to Leddy

Did Pohl play tougher comp then Hanowski? I don't think so.

Hano broke his record.

Spehar won the award after breaking the goals record

Hano broke Spehar's goals record as well.

But of course it goes to the kid from the big town that plays AA hockey.
Either you are ignorant or don't understand the voting process. It's not about scoring records in a weak conference. Or a popularity contest. It's about pro scouts and college coaches voting on the player they feel is the best in state. Step back and look at the central scouting report. That should give you a good indication of who was going to get the nod.

As to Gopher Blog's point, Leddy led a talented EP team to the state championship. Your guy struggled on the big stage.

Beyond that, I would like to extend my congratulations to all ten of the finalists.

Best wishes to all the seniors as they move on.

More then anything what they did today, was they basically told any young person from central Minnesota that you have no shot of winning Mr. Hockey no matter how good you are. Because you are not from the Iron Range or the cities, and you do not play AA hockey.

That is a horrible message to send.

The only exception to this is Pohl but they could give it to him because he was going to be a Gopher.

Now I do agree the Leddy is VERY GOOD and deserving, but after seeing Hanowski's body of work over the last 4 years, I feel he was more deserving.
You really need to understand the process. I suggest you go to the Mr. Hockey website, do your homework and get back to us.

Do I sense a little Hostility from a SCSU fan whose Huskies just got swept and denied a chance in the fial five by the Gophers?
But seriously, congrats to Leddy he deserved it he had a great year and a great tourney

Hate to rain on the parade of all the Gopher bashers here but have you ever considered the fact that MAYBE the BEST players in MN HS Hockey choose to play for the Gophs thereby skewing the numbers?

Or maybe the recruiters of the Gophers have a knack for spotting talent?

p.s. Congrats to Mr. Leddy chosen from a number of deserving HS players.

As a homer for AHA and a huge supporter of Danny Mattson, I have to say that Leddy was a n excellent choice. He stepped up his play in the tournament to prove he was the right choice.
The award was decided two weeks ago so forget the tournament for choosing him. As far as the bias to Minnesota, that is just coincidence. In 2006 the wrong player was chosen, but had the correct player been chosen the choice would again been a Gopher.

Congrats to Leddy and the rest of the EP team they deserve the awards they have been given. Good luck to next years participants.

Congratulations to Nick Leddy!

The complaining is really tiring!

Everyone of the finalists would have been deserving. Over the years the Gophers usually get the cream of the crop so it's no wonder they would have more winners.

Barribal didn't deserve it!!! Awesome your still bitter about it! I love how you explained your home team before you voiced your cherished opinion.

So how is Z man's team going to be next year? You getting four or five bantams from Lakeville??
