The "Real Deal" vs the "Happy Meal"

Post by Stitch Lips »

Ben Hanowski has the intangibles such as desire and the skills to play at higher levels. I would be disappointed if he played for the Gophers. I've been known to bleed many different colors, but maroon and gold aren't any of them. He could have tied Mayasich's record tonight had he played on that last power play. I'm not sure if he was aware of how close he came to that record.

He will definately lead the tournament in scoring this year ... possibly even put his name in the record books on more than a couple categories.

400 points is nothing to sneeze at. He scored 7 goals against Greenway of Coleraine this year .... 12 hatricks this year.

The most prolific scoring in Minnesota High School Hockey history?

I think he has earned Mr. Hockey but there are those who scoff at his accomplishments ... just as Let's Play Hockey scoffed (the voters) at Little Falls accomplishments by giving St. Thomas Academy the # 1 ranking all year despite their losses against a team that is now at 29-0.

What was that kid's name from Eden Prairie again?

With his accomplishments, I didn't even heard him mentioned during the first two games of the day. Not sure what the broadcasters were saying during the game, since I was at the x, but I sure hope they brought him up, and I guess if they didn't he showed it on the ice anyways.

I can say I was on the side of average kid vs below average compeition in the case of Ben Hanowski. After yesterdays performance I would say the kid could put up some nice numbers vs legit competition. What ever D1 program gets him I think they will be happy.

He committed last year to St Cloud State. It's already done. He won't be a gopher don't worry.

After watching last night, I realized how he has so many points. He is one of those guys who is always in the right spot at the right time. Another big point that I haven't seen brought up here is the fact that his supporting cast is pretty good. His two line-mates and that Berglund kid are all pretty talented skaters. When they all touch the puck it seemed like their first look was to find number 9. It was a fun game to watch, and I hope that anyone from that team that plays after high school makes the best of their opportunity.

After the nice post.....Now for HShockeywatcher
While writing above I couldn't wait to get done so that I tell you how you wouldn't know what it was like growing up with the same kids and playing pond hockey imitating the people that you watched every year in state, or imitating gopher players that you looked up to like idols. Going through year by year waiting for your senior year when you were all ready to go to the big show TOGETHER. Leaving for juniors is B.S. Yeah you may get more games, but these are KIDS! They are 17-18 years old, even being great athletes the odds of them going pro are not very good. Let them be kids and live that dream. Go off to college play hockey AND get an education. Don;t take the first part personal, just thought I read that you didn't even play hockey.

I'm wondering why everyone took four years of him at state to finally realise how talented he is. You all must have just not watched the Flyers' past State games.

I wouldn't fly off the handle too fast there gpp. The gophs handled the huskies pretty easily this year. We'll see how the weekend goes, but I'm not holding my breath for a huskies win.

Unbelievable that anybody could think that the 400 points came from lucky bounces.... WOW! How many high schoolers have hit the ice against good, bad or indifferent opponents in the history of hs hockey? How many have had a chance at playing for 4 years and put up big numbers while doing it? You can't be a slouch and pull this off. You can't even be a decent player and pull this off. Yes, you have to have some amount of luck but the only way to do this is to be highly skilled, gifted and not get injured. Ben is the real deal and the fact that anybody questions it or knocks his accomplishments can't be much of a knowledgeable hockey fan. Virginia would have had to played all four lines (and maybe brought in some bantams) at the same time last night to stop him.

True that. I just wonder what the totals would have been if he wasn't hurt awhile last year? His record might never be broken, but we will have to see what the future holds.

I overheard a few guys in the restroom at the X last night say that the only reason hano has 400 plus points is the week scheduale, this might be true but give the kid credit 400 plus points that's insane hano for president this kid can score goals.I myself thought he was just a big hype but after he put up 5 in two periods I have a diffrent prespective.

The reason is the schedule, but yes you have to be very good in order to get that. He wouldn't have gotten that many if he were playing at Edina.

And you should keep that perspective. He is in all my years of hockey my first top player to watch, a LF fan I will go second Festler. After that it has to go to the second Hanowski,.

Ben rise and shine, this is your time, and this is what you stayed for. Show the rest of MN what you are made of and keep playing like a team player, not like those others that have tried this whole tourney. Keep what you are doing and the rest of the Flyers. Keep intact and stay out of the box, and you will take it down. Stay positive and keep that dream alive, and it will happen.

I want somebody on this board to tell me who would score more points than Hanowski did with the schedule he had?

What you jealous posters are basically saying is that "John Mayasich wouldn't hold those state tournament records if he had a tougher schedule"

Yes ... we are comparing apples to oranges ... era # 1 to era # 2 ... the fact remains that if todays Little Falls team would have played 1951's Eveleth's team .... small falls would have beat them 15-0. Just like if todays Eveleth team would have played 1951's Little Falls team ... the score would have been worse.

Get my drift? :P

If Ben had played for Edina, they'd probably be playing for their second or third state title and not heading for Mariucci.

Yes, they would have won last night, but he wouldn't have had 400 points in his career.

Anyone who scores 400+ points has got to be a heck of a hockey player.
When Johnny Pohl came to the U, the critics said the same thing as they are now: "Red Wing didn't play anyone."

We all know, Pohl struggled the first season. He wasn't a very good skater. But he turned into an All-American with over 200 points as a college player. Only a few players in Minnesota history have done that at the U.

I've seen a lot of hockey games. This kid will be a very good player. Good look at SCSU.

Lucia, you missed again! As an alumni who pays $1500+ a year for my two seats, I'm not getting the return on investment that I want from this program.

Joel Maturi better start getting some names ready like Dean Blais.

Not quite the same Greenway team that Guyer/Sertich played for, considering they are now single A and have a 4-20 record huh?

Is Hanowski a good player? Of course he is. But Breck definitely exposed Little Falls for the frauds they were this year. Strength of schedule DOES matter, no matter how many LF fanboys parade around drinking their kool-aid.

Did Breck have more scoring chances than LF had shots?

forget Edina. after seeing the Breck-LF's game, i'm starting to think if he'd played for any respectable team in the metro area he wouldn't have gotten half the career pts he did. he plays for Edina, i'm not sure he would've been 1st line. he completely disappeared in the semi final game against Breck. was expecting ALOT more from the all time MN pts leader.

That's what was so disappointing about his performance. If he had one assist for the game but made his presence felt throughout, that's one thing. But in fact that one assist was pretty much the only play he made.

Bingo. He was a total and complete NON-factor in his team's biggest game of the year. Put him in the metro and he becomes just another above average senior forward with 50 points or so.

If that was "Mr. Hockey' out there, then they ought to put that award away for good. No way is that guy on the level of Nick Leddy. Heck, I don't think he is on the level of some of the other metro candidates.
