2009 NDP - MN Phase Tryouts

Post by joehockey »

2009 NDP Tryouts

Minnesota High School Girls kind of have 4 seasons now which allow the top players to compete with U19AAA and Hockey Acadamies around the country.

HS Season 25-31games (Nov-Feb),
Tryout for National Camp up to 6 games (March-April),
Summer Season (May-August) up to 24 games (Two Nations, Meltdown, Blues Invt., International Cup.....lots of training STP, CODP, OS, FHIT.....
Fall Season Upper Midwest Girls Elite League, OS and others.... up to 16 games (Sept-Oct).

Today they start the "next season" trying out for the National Development Camps. Last year the Minnesota Girls HS Coaches Associations took over the process at the U16 & U17 level while MN hockey continued over U15. The U16-U17 process goes from March 6 to April 19. Minnesota does not participate in NDP at the U14 level which is kind of a missed opportunity for Minnesota

U15 Program
girls.http://www.minnesotahockey.org/assorted ... rogram.pdf
Phase 1 March 23 – April 11, 2009 District Trials/Team Selection (Cost $70 per candidate)
Each MH District (12) will invite a minimum of 40 candidates to participate in the trials to determine the 20 players to be selected to represent each district at the Advanced 15 Spring Festival. Each candidate will receive 4 hours of ice time and a participant jersey. Total number of players invited 480.
Phase 2 March 23 – April 11, 2009 District Team Selection/Preparation
20 players selected from trials to district team
Each team is allowed two hours of ice time for pre- event practice/preparation.
Phase 3 Completed by April 18, 2009 Seeding Round
Four divisions of three teams each play a round robin preliminary two game schedule. The top two finishers in each division are seeded into an eight-team event with each team playing three games. The third place finishers are placed in a four- team round robin event also playing three games each.
Phase 4 April 25 – 26, 2009 Minnesota Hockey Spring Festival: SchwanSuper Rink (Cost per player $125, includes Phases 2, 3, & 4)
One 8 -team event (1st & 2nd from each preliminary division). Each team plays three games. One 4- team event (3rd place team from each preliminary division). Each team plays three games. Player Evaluation: A team of knowledgeable coaches and scouts will evaluate all participants, consult with team coaches and select the top 102 players for participation in the Minnesota Hockey Summer Advanced 15 Festival. Alternates will also be chosen and placed if there are participant turndowns.
Phase 5 June 13 - 18, 2009 Minnesota Hockey Summer Camp, Mankato
(Cost per player $525) Expense of this festival is shared equally by the participants and is based on actual cost less grants received from Minnesota Hockey (MH) and USA Hockey. 102 selected players participate in a weeklong training camp at Minnesota State University Mankato and All Seasons Arena. Housing and meals are provided. Six teams play a round robin schedule of games, attend dry land training sessions, and classroom sessions daily. The staff at the Summer Festival will be
headed by Jeff Vizenor, Head Coach of the Minnesota State University Mankato Girls Hockey and will include prominent college and high school coaches teamed with current and former college hockey players to serve as coaches, role models, and counselors for each team. Player Evaluation: All staff members evaluate each player and develop a watch list on the second day of the festival. Players are continually evaluated and added to the watch list. Nightly meetings are held to discuss player performances. Each team staff plus the Festival coaching staff then ranks their top 20 players. Numerical values are attached to each rank position. Final player rankings are then calculated according to their total numerical values from all evaluators. The players with the highest numbers for each position are selected to represent Minnesota Hockey at the USA Hockey National Select 15 Development Camp. USA Hockey will inform Minnesota Hockey of the number of slots we were awarded for both position and team numbers. We will pass those numbers along when they become available.
Phase 6 USA Hockey National Girls Select (Advanced) 15 Development Camp July 22-28 ESL Sports Centre Rochester, N.Y.

Girls’ Advanced 16 (Born 1993) and Advanced 17 (Born 1992) Program Structure:

The Advanced 16/17 program consists of four distinct phases as follows:
Phase I Section Tryouts: Each of the 8 Girls’ Minnesota High School Hockey Sections (A and AA) conducts tryouts in their Section with a minimum of 40 players per Section. The tryout process collectively allows a minimum of 320 players to participate. These tryouts occur in late March each year with 20 players selected to represent their Section in the Advanced 16 and 17 Spring Festival. Each candidate will receive 4.5 hours of ice time and a participant jersey. All candidates in these age classes are required to complete a USAH registration form on-line and pay all appropriate fees to the team General Manager prior to any on-ice participation. Dates: March 1st-22nd, 2009 at various arenas by Section
Cost: $70
Phase II Spring Festival Weekend: The eight Festival teams have a maximum of 4.5 hours of practice ice that they may use at the coaches discretion. All 8 teams play three games at the festival and each player is evaluated by an experienced team of evaluators and coaches. The Spring Festival showcases the top 160 16 and 17 year old players in the state. 54 players are chosen from the Festival to advance to the Final “54”. All players in these age classes are required to pay the Festival fees to the team General Manager prior to on-ice participation. Dates: March 27th-29th, 2009 at Plymouth Ice Center Cost: $125
Phase III Final “54”: Following the Festival, 54 players are invited to participate in the Final “54” Tryout. The Final “54” players will be divided up into three teams and have a team practice on Friday and games on Saturday within their age-group. On Sunday they will
play cross-over games with the other age-group. A team of knowledgeable coaches and scouts will evaluate all participants, consult with team coaches and select the top players from both the Advanced 16’s & 17’s. Selected players will represent Minnesota Hockey at the USA Hockey National Select 16 and Select 17 Festivals in the summer.
All Final “54” players in these age classes are required to pay the Final “54” fees to the team General Manager prior to on-ice participation.
Dates: April 17th-19th, 2009 at Plymouth Ice Center Cost: $125
National Select 16/17 Camp: The top 20-25 players from the Advanced 16/17 Camps are selected to participate in the National Select 16/17 camps operated by USA Hockey and coached by the top college coaches from across the country. These are 7 day residence camps held at different locations across the US determined by USA Hockey each year and the teams are comprised of players from all over the United States.
Dates: Select 17’s June 26th-July 2nd, 2009 @ St. Cloud State Univ. St. Cloud, MN.
Select 16’s June 26th-July 2nd, 2009 @ St. Cloud State Univ. St. Cloud, MN.

What a tool! Do you regard this site as your own personal champaign room? First you do the lap dance for your high schhol coach, and now we get to see you on the pole for a certain 4 hockey seasons that you dub to be worthwhile. Where does CODP fit into your plan? where does STP fit in? How about the others? This is insane to declare you have the 4 seasons to hockey that matter.

Sorry to offend you this was not meant to be the beginning or the end of anything CODP, STP, OS, FHIT all are great and there are many outstate programs that are great also. All of these programs should allow MN hockey to stay strong didn't think that was a bad thing.

Will Vizenor still head the summer festival up as he is no longer part of the Mavs coaching staff? Just curious?

The "chase for ice" season begins for some as some communities do not have year around ice and a number of spring sports start on Monday, too.

Your information throughout the season(s) has been nothing short of completely and utterly informative and helpful to navigate the complex world of girls hockey in MN. Please keep it coming!

Monkeysox, what does champaign mean? I've never heard that term before?

Good catch on Vizenor this was off the MN Hockey site. When he left coaching MSU his plans were to stay involved with the U15 MN Select Camp but who knows. The camp is outstanding and would highly recommend to all.

I'm curious as to how the girls are picked for this. Are they picked soley based on the 3 try outs or are the evaluators also looking at their season records too? Some of the older girls tell my daughter that the same girls are always picked year after year and unless you make it as a 15 you won't have any chance after that.

I hear the same thing from plenty of parents and girls, Reguardless of whether it's true or not I think the perception is that it'a a pretty closed process with very little chance for girls outside of the loop.

I don't know - good question....over a series of years? Last year from U15 in 2007 to U16 in 2008 there was about a 55% turnover in final NDP attendees.

In Phase I each section is set up to have 40 players tonight in Section 4 at U17 30 skaters and 4 goalies attended there was about the same number on the ice for the U16 in the session before. Last year the U16 in Section 4 only 22 skaters attended. Tonight they did 30 minutes of drills then scrimmaged 5-5 and then 4-4. Some of the girls were in top shape and others fatigued as the night went on - I suppose some reflection of when HS season ended and if they have been on ice. There were a lot of very good players on the ice and whoever the final 12 forwards, 6 defenders and 2 goalies are the section 4 team should be pretty strong.

Phase I in Section 4 ends tonight - they skated Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday - each 1.5 hours. First two sessions were 30 minutes drills/skating and then 60 minutes 5-5 or 4-4 scrimmages. I assume Sec 4 U16 and U17 teams would be named in next week to play in Festival end of March.

What are the other Sections doing I heard a number are not starting until next week.

Section 2 is 3/18, 3/20 and 3/21. At the 17 level I'm hearing about more than a few quality players that are either not doing it or considering not doing it for various reasons.

Is that what you have heard about Junior Fest, too, as Phase II is one of the try-out options for that? A few that we have chatted with are considering not trying out for Jr Fest either for a variety of reasons.

I was just looking at cost to do this and if my math is right, my question is where does all of that money go.

phase 1 is $70 per person and if 40 people try out

40X$70= $2,800\4.5 hrs = $622.22 per hr for Ice time and other fees and if more show up it is even more, what does all of the money go for.

The players also have to register with USA hockey, which adds additional cost. Some of the parents that we have spoken with (have with their daughters) decided the monies are better spent toward other training or team opportunities. If a player is outstate add in gas and hotel costs. So, for some that has been a consideration people mention as well as spring sports, other activities that conflict such as trips (school and family), etc.

No idea how the fees are determined or distributed.

Another issue is that if NPD conflicts with the current spring sport you may see some kids make it to the next round and if it is scheduled the same day as the current primary sport they may not show as to not jeprodize their standing on the current spring sport team.

40X$70= $2,800\4.5 hrs = $622.22 per hr for Ice time and other fees and if more show up it is even more, what does all of the money go for.
MGHCA Runs - so lets look at one example in Sec 4 at U17 34 signed up that is $2380 - if ice is $185 * 4.5 = $832.50 - they printed up jerseys lets say $20 * 34 = $680 - you had invitation letters and postage 40 * $2 = $80 - $1592.50 subtotal - $2380 = $787.50 if you divide this by 4.5 hours you have $175/hr for Labor. They may have had to purchase water bottles or equipment for evaluators.....Section 4 had a GM, 2 on ice coaches, 4 Evaluators and a clock/time keeper so 8 people - $175/8 = $21.88/hour per person if equally divided. There are probably some other costs and I am sure clock person didn't make same as GM.....those numbers probably don't say anyone is rich. Take the other section with lower numbers and it is smaller amount.

I was pleasantly surporised that in Section 4 numbers went from 22 U16 skaters up to 30 U17 skaters year over year in this economy and the fact that spring break is more important to a U17 than a U16 as far as travel. If you look at other competitions this doesn't seem over priced at $70 for a jersey - $20 and $50 for ice or $11.11 per ice hour - lots of training is $15. In Seciton 4 the U17 pace was great and girls all seemed to compete hard yet lots of smiles.

IMO money well spent regardless of the outcome. For the competitive athlete who may not have had the most satisfying high school season, this is a challenging transition into summer hockey…and after watching the 17’s from Section 4, a chance to exercise some (Section playoff) demons. This group is very talented and extremely competitive. Fun to watch.
