I'd say Leddy or Budish, only by a bit though. I've seen both play Budish, actually more then Leddy. But what i have seen Leddy do I would pick him. He's got great speed, good stick skills, and one hell of a shot. Plus, on the power play it forces teams to really cover the blue line, which in turn opens up more shoots for his teammates.

Leddy is a winner

Leddy is the major factor here. He is healthy now and will be on the ice for 40 of the 51 minutes against Tonka. He will see that EP makes it to the State Tourney. Tonka has a lot of forward talent and can score goals. EP needs to shut down Tonka's 1st line and score goals with their very talented 2nd and 3rd lines. Even if they split up the Cotta and Max. G. This game may go into OT. Truthfully, this is State Tournament fina championship games with EP versus Tonka and Edina versus Jefferson. Unfortunility, they have to meet in their section champ game.

Budish is the obvious selection for me. Big, skilled, unselfish and very creative with a good stride is a better NHL skill-set than you see in the lightning-fast and incredibly smooth Leddy. Leddy, as well as Budish, needs to toughen up and ultimately Budish has more upside. To me Budish's potential is more untapped at this point, and based purely on need and potential he is the better prospect.
Budish = Blake Wheeler (better passer, less scoring touch)
Leddy = Alex Goligoski (best case)

Mr. Hockey.
Are you kidding me. If Leddy leads this EP team to the finals against Edina for the State Champ, its Leddy, local kid to play at the U of M, what better defines a Minnesota Mr. Hockey???starmvp wrote:How do you know if you have only seen Budish play?edinahornetkid24 wrote:never seen leddy play but Budish is very good so I have to say Budish.

I am sorry Budish didn't get to play this year, I am sure he would have really made a big difference at Edina, but Leddy did the right thing, staying at his high school program, given a number outside the program differences. U of M recuit and staying at his high school program. This defines a MR. Hockey status.starmvp wrote:How do you know if you have only seen Budish play?edinahornetkid24 wrote:never seen leddy play but Budish is very good so I have to say Budish.

That's great that Leddy did that, but Budish stayed at his HS program, declined various offers to play else where, and will play for the U, so not sure that what you said here distinguishes between the two. If you're talking about who deserves the Mr. Hockey award, I'm with you on that buddy. Award it to Leddy.Lakeviewing wrote:I am sorry Budish didn't get to play this year, I am sure he would have really made a big difference at Edina, but Leddy did the right thing, staying at his high school program, given a number outside the program differences. Actually for development reasons Leddy and Budish should've went some where else to play hockey.Hockey_High09 wrote:That's great that Leddy did that, but Budish stayed at his HS program, declined various offers to play else where, and will play for the U, so not sure that what you said here distinguishes between the two. I'm sure you thought it was great for Ness to stay at Roseau last year too? If that's what the kids want to do great! But it DID effect Ness this year playing college hockey. Keep in mind that Ness was more dominate in high compared to Leddy and Budish. Lets see how good Leddy is next year when he wears the "M".
Re: Are you kidding me?
Ness should not have played at the U this year. It was a big mistake. He could have dominated at highschool and probably taken the Rams to state. He didn't get anything out of going to college early.Judgeandjury wrote:Actually for development reasons Leddy and Budish should've went some where else to play hockey.Hockey_High09 wrote:That's great that Leddy did that, but Budish stayed at his HS program, declined various offers to play else where, and will play for the U, so not sure that what you said here distinguishes between the two. ness wants to go pro and make money, not win another state title...there is more to hockey than just that. he will be at the U another year and then be pro...look at the average age of NHL players, its a young mans game, very few people play in the league past age 30 anymore. why do you think the gophers lose anyone good after a year or 2....its time to make money b4 youmiss the boat....buddish will be there 1 year after he plays juniors next year is my guess. sucks for college hockey, and sucks when good highschool players leave early to paly juniors or college early. but that is the way the game is played now, or how business is run i should say.

Folks, there are arguments on both sides for these types of issues as to why or when a player should leave.
In my opinion, Ness had nothing to gain by staying in Roseau. MOST juniors in high school, that leave school, are going to the USHL, or NAHL, with the intent on getting a D1 scholarship. Ness is one of the absolute rare gifted players that was talented enough to go right to college.
The group at Edina has played together so long, and if memory serves me, they orally agreed with themselves to stay the whole time. For the most part, these Edina players knew they would be going D1, and, in some cases, it's means so much to experience HS graduation with your classmates.
The chances of these Edina kids getting drafted is high, too, so, leaving for juniors wouldn't necessarily improve their stock. There's a heckuva lot more exposure playing HS hockey in the Twin Cities market than playing in Sioux Falls or Fargo. To me, it makes sense to stay.
Also, keep in mind, most players who make oral commitments as juniors are told by the college programs what they want them to do. If Don Lucia advises a kid to go play juniors for a year, the player better go. My guess, and I don't know firsthand, but Lucia knew Buddish wanted to play football, and Lucia believes in the HS experience.

Ness came in at 5'9" and weighed 165 lbs. He is a heck of a hockey player, but size matters (easy) to a certain degree. That has shown when he goes into the corner and defends people in front of the net.
The arguement for playing hockey elsewhere can go both ways. Jr. hasn't helped Michael Fink or Aaron Crandel. Those are two examples I can think of. How good would Hopkins have been the last two years with Michael Fink?

Fink has been pretty banged up the last 2 years and from what I have heard, the injury he sustained was going to happen, just happened to him in juniors, so I don't know how much you can judge him on that.breakout wrote:Judgeandjury wrote:Actually for development reasons Leddy and Budish should've went some where else to play hockey.Hockey_High09 wrote: That's great that Leddy did that, but Budish stayed at his HS program, declined various offers to play else where, and will play for the U, so not sure that what you said here distinguishes between the two. i believe lucia's son Tony left high school in 11th grade for Juniors. So much for the high school experience......

I guess I give some people more credit than they deserve.
WHAT DID I SAY??? I SAID, "MOST PLAYERS WHO MAKE ORAL COMMITTMENTS AS JUNIORS ARE TOLD BY THE COLLEGE PROGRAMS....... Lucia "advises a kid to go to juniors, then they better." Players that are as good as Buddish, who are also standout multi-sport stars, that won't need juniors, Lucia would prefer they enjoy the high school experience.
Clearly, Lucia thought his son would need to play juniors first. I don't think Tony Lucia had made an oral commitment to play anywhere, and went to juniors, as most kids do, looking for a college.
Geez, Louise....
... and by the way, I believe that Leddy is now ranked higher than Buddish via Central Scouting.

Im going to have to back midwesthockey on this one i know leddy and he was told by lucia to stay and play HS hockey over the ntdp which he really wanted to do for a couple of reasons one being leddy would have more exposure to playing powerplay (in this case all 2 mins. of the pp) second more ice time probably more then half a period in his case and third he probably wanted him to enjoy HS after all its a once in a lifetime expierence that he'll remember his whole life.
Hope Leddy Recieves the Honor Of "Mr. Hockey"

Thank you Bardown...
You would think that some people look at my screen name and think I am some lame hic that sits at my computer in my underwear making this stuff up!!!
I know I may not be BIG SEXY (because we know he must be with a name like that), but why people question my posts is beyond me!
I am happy for all these kids that get awards - Leddy - no different. I do wish Buddish was able to compete this year.

I suggested that Leddy may have moved up, courtesy of the Gopher hockey game this weekend when it was stated that Jordan Schroeder was still the highest ranked North American college player and a definite first-rounder, and I thought they said or it was posted on the screen that Leddy was now 17th. No mention of Budish.winter15 wrote:both of them, but budish is rated higher on the nhl central scouting mid term release
No disrespect to Zach, but, it would be quite an accomplishment to stay that high on the list with the injury he sustained. I hope for the State of Hockey and Minnesota's sake, he does still go in the first round.

Missing puzzle for Hopkins
Fink would have made a major difference for Hopkins this year. Who knows where Hopkins would have finished. One very solid line and a solid goalie. Maybe jumped too early. It appears the current state of affairs for these kids is to excell in development, but what is forgotten is maturity. Stay at home and enjoy being a stud on the high school team. If you are really that good, the scouts will find you.scoreboard33 wrote:Fink has been pretty banged up the last 2 years and from what I have heard, the injury he sustained was going to happen, just happened to him in juniors, so I don't know how much you can judge him on that.breakout wrote:Judgeandjury wrote: Actually for development reasons Leddy and Budish should've went some where else to play hockey.

Both players are very good, but if we are talking about whether or not they will make a difference next year at Minnesota then we need to look around. The Gophers have all the talent, right out of high school and they can barely make two passes. Don't get me wrong, I am a huge Gopher hockey fan and have been for over 30 years. But I think it is time to send these kids right out of high school down to the juniors for a year or two. They need that for conditioning and to learn how to play at the higher level. Both Leddy and Budish should do this. If the almighty dollar is there for them, it will be in a year. Ness is not a college player, yet. It will take at least another year. He was so dominant in high school because of the type of players around him. Had he gone to the juniors then he may have been better next year. Look at Tony Lucia, he played a year in juniors and his freshman year he was still not great, but this year he looks great.
Besides these kids are there for college first then hockey. If it was the other way around then we need to take state money out of the picture.

What size is Leddy? If he has size, then he probably could step right in and play for the gophers next year. If he is small, then you are just adding another undersized defensemen to an already small gophers defense. The gophs are getting killed in the defensive zone because they can't win any battles along the boards, and they don't have the size to move guys from in front of the net.
Ness - Fairchild - Wehrs (D1?) are all small
Fisher plays small, no aggresiveness
RJ - graduating
Lofquist - only big and physical defensemen they have.
They sure do miss Stu Bickel this year!
