Players play and he was one of their best. He was contributing to his team during a playoff run. Bad luck is all that can be attributed to.

Dude, he got hurt on a kickoff in the first quarter! What do you mean it was unnecessary. A coach isn't going to change his kickoff coverage team in a 7 or 14 point game in the first quarter. What on Earth are you talking about?sorno82 wrote:The thing that I just do not understand is why he was put in a position like that. You usually do not put your best players on the kick-off against a team you are much better than. The saddest thing in my mind is that it was an unnecessary risk to take given the circumstances and potential loss.
The take away is not to give up football, but just don't add risk without value. If he would have hurt it against EP in a playoff game, then thats the breaks. However, hurting it the way he did is just stupid. The coach should have his head examined.
And you don't put your best players on your kickoff coverage team against an inferior opponent? You don't change your kick coverage team going into any games. I'm sure Edina isn't the only team that has its best players covering kicks, its the reality of high school football.

Listen, you can have your best players on kick off if you want, it's a coaches option and if he thinks, the team will do their best with the best on let him do that. Your blaming the coach for an injury, it's a sport, injuries happen, whether your own kickoff, offense or defense.

Last thing I am going to say on this because what is done is done. I have played on a few good teams at the high school and college level, and your starters hardly ever play on the kick-off team. The coaches I had were smart though and realized that playing your stars on the kick off team was too risky. The second stringers used that opportunity to show their stuff and get the opportunity. Stupid is what stupid does. The new era of high school coaches must not get it. In highschool, I used the opportunity on the kick return team to lay some nasty hits on the biggest and best players on the other team, which go me noticed, and made me a starter. I was pullled off special teams when that happened, which provided an opportunity for someone else. The coach was too stupid to realize that Zach probably would be a target. That is completely not true, now. Probably back when you played it was, but now a lot of teams value special teams a lot more, especially in high school.sorno82 wrote:Last thing I am going to say on this because what is done is done. The theory is that the plays that are most likely to account for a big play and most likely to swing the momentum in the game happen on special teams. Special teams plays are now viewed by a lot of coaches as the single most important plays in the game because of the big play opportunity and that special teams really affect the field position a team gets and can change the whole game. Now, if a coach views special teams like this, you put your best players on the field for special teams.
This is a new theory and is spoken about at many coaches conferences and if you saw EP -Edina 2 years ago, Edina was much more focused on special teams and Edina won the field position game easily and almost broke 2 returns for TD's. EP overmatched Edina and still won. But this year, I spoke with Grant and he said that game forced him to change his special teams system and practice special teams a lot more and put the best players on special teams and showed me film of what Edina did and why it forced him to completely re-evaluate his views on special teams.
sorno82, I also understand where you are coming from, but I just thought I would let you of how some coaching philosophies are changing about special teams and why you would put your best players on special teams. This new theory all started with Frank Beamer and his beamerball.
