very much agree with this one. If he cant score against decent teams i cant see him doing anything in the WCHA. IF St.Cloud plays the little sisters of the poor every game like franny does than he will be an amazing player. (but who wouldnt be?)

Yes he is definantly a one way player and does get caught playing suckhole, but I imagine Motzko will form him into a more well rounded player, also probobly a year of juniors, but he can score gotta give him that. Congrats

Anyone not from St. Francis or a St. Francis fan, is this kid D1 material? The same guy who played for them last year? The team that got beat by Benilde 16-0 and 12-0? Didn't they lose to Cambridge this year? This is a huge shocker.

I think this is a hard-earned scholarship by a hard-working kid. Sure Benik has been playing poor-quality teams, but anybody who can put up numbers like him is something special. He knows how to shoot well through screens and score goals. He also made the select 15 national team a couple years back.

Definitely not convinced that he's a D1 player

Shocker?? Sorry, play somebody. St. Cloud is really reaching with this committment. Play a city conference and we see where he is at. There are a a lot of kids that have to play a tougher schedule and may be not get goals against a tougher level of play. Who watches these conferences?

Benilde-St. Margaret's
Chisago Lakes
Irondale
Robbinsdale Cooper
Spring Lake Park
St. Francis
St. Louis Park
Totino-Grace

Yeah, play a city conference! Who ever heard of any of these teams? Irondale... that must be somewhere up in da range!

It's not the conference schedule that's weak, it's their non-conference schedule. Compare St. Francis (bottom 14% schedule strength) versus Benilde (top 20%). To be fair, you can't really compare Benik to Hanowski either, as the Flyers' schedule strength is at the 50th percentile.

Regardless, Joey didn't set the schedule... all he can do is play as best as he can. I think the Huskies are gambling with this one, but as the saying goes, "Fortes fortuna adiuvat". Congrats, and good luck Joey!

Congrats to Joey Benik! Don't fool yourselves nay-sayers and suckhole-callers, coach Motzko knows more about hockey and hockey players than you. This kid can strait up play hockey. Great news about a kid from St. Francis!

Bold statement, Benik= 15 national camp.... and did he even play in the elite league???

Hanowski= 15,16,17 national camp has been playing in the elite league since he was a sophomore. His junior year was in the top 5 in scoring in the elite league and would have this year if it wasn't of an injury. Also the fact that hanowski is likely to get darfted this summer puts him in a little different category.

Other then that being maybe the dumbest comment I've read on this forum, congrats to the kid, weak or tough schedule it's tough to teach scoring.

Congrats to the kid, hopefully a year of juniors will round him out to be a solid player.

If Mitch Ryan, Ryan Peckskamp, and Jon Ammerman can't get into the line-up, how is Benik? For those who compared him to Festler and Hanowski, you obviously don't know what you're talking about.

That is not a fair evaluation by any means. Are you saying Tyler Lapic is not D1 because he doesn't produce against Holy Angels? It's extremely hard to get anything done when you are all by yourself. I'm not saying Benik deserves the scholarship because I have never seen him play, but to say he doesn't deserve it because his team was blown out twice by an outstanding BSM team is just dumb. I guess time will tell whether he does deserve it or not.

And along with the guy who was wondering what Benik is like... anyone have an actual evaluation of his hockey skills?

I don't post here much, but I've been reading this board for years now.
I remember precious few years ago when people on here were bad-mouting Blake Wheeler and TJ Oshie ("overrated"); I wonder where those two are now?
I'm not saying this kid is Blake Wheeler. What I am saying is that scouts and coaches at SCSU have significantly more hockey knowledge and scouting acumen than anyone sitting and spouting off on an anonymous message board. If they didn't think he was "DI material", like all you experts ponder, then I wonder why they would recruit him? Obviously they see something in him, eh?
