58?? The announcers said that it was around 38-17 going into the OT period. I watched the game and it didn't seem like nearly 60 shots on goal!

About Fons ... from the StarTribune (Dean Spiros)

Post by Edger »

In the grand scheme of things, the Hopkins boys' hockey team's 4-3 victory over Edina on Saturday might prove to not mean a lot. What cannot be disputed is how this one resonated on a personal level for Royals junior goaltender Alex Fons.
Hopkins had a breakout season a year ago, and the standout play by Fons was a main reason why. That success has not carried over this season for the Royals or for Fons.
"Alex will be the first to tell you he hasn't had his best stuff this year," Hopkins coach Chad Nyberg said.
The low point came last Tuesday in a 7-0 loss to Classic Lake Conference rival Minnetonka.
Fons was pulled from the net with the Royals trailing 5-0. He wasn't accountable for all five, but there he was taking a seat at the end of the bench.
"You can't help but take it personally," Fons said.
Coming off that loss, Hopkins didn't seem to have a lot of reason for optimism with Edina up next.
"I feel like I let the team down," Fons said. Not to mention himself. "I had made it a goal to make it through high school without being pulled from a game," he said. "That was the first time it happened."
He told himself he wasn't going to let anyone down two games in a row, regardless the opponent. And 56 saves later, he celebrated as Ryan Colvin scored the game-winner at 4 minutes, 20 seconds of overtime.
Fons saw 19 of those shots in the third period as the Hornets did their best to overcome a slow start that saw them fall behind 2-0 in the first. Edina's top line of Anders Lee, Marshall Everson and Connor Gaarder pounded the net with quality shots seemingly on every shift from the second period on.
Hopkins fans had no choice but to hold their breath ever time that trio hopped over the boards. "Those guys are men," Nyberg said.
And the Royals (11-5-1), as a team, can stand tall after playing their best game of the season.
The Hornets (15-2) had won 12 games in a row since suffering its only other loss of the season, against Hill-Murray.

Suprisingly, Benik was not involved with the goal - at least not directly. From the looks of it, it was an exciting finish. Here's the scoring summary:

Saint Francis 0-0-1=1
Totino-Grace 1-1-0=2

First Period - 1. Totino-Grace, Billy Heck (Dan DeLisle), 1:40.

Second Period - 2. Totino-Grace, Dan DeLisle (Billy Heck, Eric Louiselle), 11:40.

Third Period - 3. Saint Francis, Josh Bliskowski (Unassisted), 13:51.

Saves - Andy Benik, Saint Francis, 14-12-8=34; Tyler Olson, Totino-Grace, 5-8-11=24.

Right. Here is what my memory recalls.

After two periods, Bart Archer, one of the MyFoxHockey.com announcers says that the shots are 38 for Edina, 13 for Hopkins. This didn't seem right to me since the shots seemed about even.

Heading into the overtime period, I recall Archer saying that shots were 38 for Edina and 17 for Hopkins. He said on air that he didn't think that the numbers could be correct, but how could he question the stats crew.

I wasn't really paying attention to the SOG statistic. At the back of my mind -occupied with something else at the time- I thought that that didn't seem right also. How could Edina go through period 3 with no shots on goal when they had clearly scored one goal during that period? Plus, I had seen other shots on goal with my own eyes.

So, yeah, pointstreak says that Edina outshot Hopkins 59 to 27. Edina did put a lot of pressure on Fons in the third so I believe that 19 shots was possible. But, like Archer, the difference between the two teams did not appear to be that great when watching the game.

From my observation, I will say that while Fons was great in goal, the Hopkins forwards and defenders did a fantastic job at stopping the Edina shooters from getting good clear shots on goal. They were back-checking quite well and tying up the shooters out in the area between the faceoff circles.

Anyway, I wasn't recording the shots myself so I have no way of questioning the stats crew. Outstanding game!
