Great field for this tourney and very tough to predict who will come out on top. Could be a preview of State?

You could make a case for most teams. That is why I vote ALL OF THE ABOVE!

This will be a great tournament. Every game should be a great game and you probably can't say any outcome will be an upset.

10 votes so far and it appears Stillwater is favored! Kind of surprising that Hopkins only has 2 votes so far.

Stillwater vs. Hopkins will be the key opening game of this tournament.

Here are their stats for the year only common opponent is Edina who they both beat Hopkins 3-0 while Stillwater was 2-1. Stats would support Hopkins with little tougher schedule with more ranked teams and better results - but that is why they will play the game! It will probably come down to which goalie is able to outduel the other - both teams have great goaltending.

#3AA Stillwater 10-1-0 Goals For 5.9 Goals Against 1.5 - 3 Shutouts Won 10 in a row
A Hill-Murray L 4-2 (Ranked #4AA record 7-2 lost to #2AA Warroad, #5 GRG in OT)

H Cretin-Derham Hall W 7-0 (3-6-0)
H Hastings W 7-2 (4-6-2)

Hopkins is now favored slightly over Stillwater. Very tough call, but I voted for Hill Murray because:

1. They may have a slightly easier path to the final, and
2. If they have their full lineup and they are "on", I don't know if anyone can beat them.

BUT, as nmnhockeydad and joehockey said, "you could make a case for most teams" and "you probably can't say any outcome will be an upset" and I couldn't agree more. Nice to have such great balance amongst the state's top teams!

I will have to go with Stillwater. They are firing on all cylinders. They have the most talent and are playing with a lot of confidence right now. Hopkins will be facing their toughest test to this point.

I have to agree. Stillwater has very explosive forwards who can put the puck in the net. They also have a very good goalie. Their defense does not stand out, but they don't have to with forwards who control the play and a goalie who makes saves when she has to. They will definitely give Hopkins a run for their money.

Hopefully HM will be full strength but looks like one key forward is still a question mark to be back healthy.

Top players include Hannah Brandt (Hill-Murray), Callie Dahl (Stillwater), Becky Kortum (Hopkins), Gina McDonald (Irondale) and Lauren Zrust (Blaine).
From the Stribs blurb. I just wanted to add...it's a nice list with "top players" indeed, but looking at the teams / rosters participating...it's kind of a short list. :wink:

Can't wait to see how this Tourney shakes out. My day one picks are:
Hopkins 4 Stillwater 3 (Close game unless Hopkins can stay out of the penalty box);
GRG 4 Blaine 2 (Not as close as score appears);
Hill-Murray 2 Duluth 1 (possibly the closest 1st round game);
Edina 3 Irondale 2 (doesn't matter who wins this round, both are done).

I will predict:

GRG 4 Blaine 2
Hill Murray 4 Duluth 2
Irondale 4 Edina 3 (this only happens if McDonald and Lorence have a big day - I wonder if they will skate on same line for this big tournament)

Great call on the score. This game could have gone either way. Hopkins led most the game and outshot Stillwater, but Stillwater seemed to have more energy as the game got into the 3rd. They scored somewhat early in 3rd to tie it. In OT Hopkins came out quick with a couple of good chances but then they slowed down and Stillwater was skating faster and beating Hopkins to the puck. Hopkins only skated 4 D when they are used to having 5 in rotation (missing their best penalty killer and break out passer). Hopefully Hopkins uses this lesson to their advantage when it comes to sections and State.

Blaine- 7
GRG- 4

GRG was up 4-1 after 1 then played awful in the last two periods.
Havel was pretty shaky in net; let in a lot of easy goals.

Hopkins did not outshoot stillwater, shots on net where 47-34 in favor of Stillwater. Both goalies came up big a couple times and each team had its moments but i would say stillwater definitely had the better of play for the most part. What a great game to watch, either team could have won. But i think stillwaters depth paid off in the end.

Terrible comment! How about GRG played shaky.

Havel is an outstanding goalie who in most games faces more shots than her opponent. Goalies can be struggle every so often and there are always 5 other players on the ice who the puck has to get by. In my opinion the major reason why GRG is a top 5 team is Havel. Take her away and GRG has 3-4 more losses.

We'll see what the shots were but hopkins was well ahead after two and I never heard what the final count was, but Stillwater only had 18 after two periods of play (I'm pretty sure Stillwater didn't get 29 shots in one period plus OT)??
