I was at the game and thought the first was very evenly played with maybe a slight edge to LF. LF won the second, but Cathedral dominated the third and were taking it to LF in OT also until the penalty call. This game could have went either way. I think they are pretty evenly matched teams. I thought LF kind of lost their legs at the end of the game. They were fortunate to come away with the win.

it doesnt get more evenly matched that an overtime win..do they play againin regular season? where was thegame played? i am surprised LF didnt havemore shots...the paper said cathedrals goalie had 18 saves...5 goals is bad to let in on that many shots! i think cathedral 28 shots and scored on 4 of them....i would have had schmitt all over hanowski allnight! but sounds like hanowski had his way with cathedral...3 goals and 2 assists. nice to see some solid class A hockey in this area!
go cathedral!
go cathedral!

From what I heard LF carried the play for the first 2 periods but Cathedral dominatined the 3rd outshooting LF 10-2, I listened to the radio and they said the shots were in favor of SCC 28-22HasNoMoves wrote:it doesnt get more evenly matched that an overtime win..do they play againin regular season? where was thegame played? i am surprised LF didnt havemore shots...the paper said cathedrals goalie had 18 saves...5 goals is bad to let in on that many shots! i think cathedral 28 shots and scored on 4 of them....i would have had schmitt all over hanowski allnight! but sounds like hanowski had his way with cathedral...3 goals and 2 assists. nice to see some solid class A hockey in this area!

Unfortunately these teams don't play eachother again in the regular season, the game was played in LF
I agree they should have someone watching Hanowski, but I think Schmiit is to much of an offensive threat himself to just have him shadow someone all night

Everyone knows he is a great offensive defenseman but if he can limit hanowski and the amount of damage he does it would greatly benefit the team and give them a better chance to win the game

EZ...after seeing Schmitt play against Apollo, I agree Cathedral needs him too much offensively to lethim shadow Hanowski...Schmitt is a talented defenseman no doubt, but I see his main strength as being an offensive minded defenseman...so very good point you made. It's cool they schedule eachother because they are two good class A programs, but it doesnt make much sense to play twice since they are not in the same section...but wish I could see it...well..maybe in St. Paul in March;)
If you equalize it, big deal, then you play four on four....eventually the game will shift back to a more conventional style...nipeshow18 wrote:Yeah but going with the whole concept of a team game, if it betters the team why not shadow him? Easy to do on a message board, not so easy in a hockey game. Ask Nate, I'm sure he would agree.nipeshow18 wrote:Taking Hanowski out of the game completely changes everything and gives the other team an advantage. Without Hanowski, Little Falls would be a team we would seldom talk about. He is Little Falls' offense.

For high school... Schmidt. Because SCC is deeper, he doesn't get the "too much ice time" syndrome. However, he's got many of the same bad habits that all high school players have due to their situations. Juniors and/or college programs will help break (and expose) bad habits in a real hurry. Then, the question really becomes who's got a faster learning curve? I have no answer to that question.2pipesnin wrote:So who is the bettor or more complete hockey player? Hanowski or Schmitt?

I think its hard to say who is better when they play different postions. They are obviously both huge to their respective teams but it difficult to say.2pipesnin wrote:So who is the bettor or more complete hockey player? Hanowski or Schmitt?
I think offensively they both are great players but have different qualities. Hanowski I think is more of a "natural" goal scorer that can use a couple moves to beat guys where schmitt's speed is what makes him dangerous, he also is fearless when it comes to driving to the net with the puck.

for what it's worth, Hanowski has better moves, and intuition around the net, Schmitt has better speed, checking, and THE HARDEST slapshot in the entire MN state highschool league. Hanowski reminds me a lot of Mark Parrish in his HS and college days...a guy who could plain old bury the puck given the opportunity.

LF's first two lines are as solid as any but they are still searching for a third line. They have been cycling different kids on that line to see who will fit. I heard Hanowski's little brother who is a freshman saw the ice a little bit on the third line against SCC.stitches wrote:So, outside of the FACT that Schmidt and Hanowski are really good hockey players, who else do these two teams have? Or was it just the two of them on the ice? How did their lines stack up against each other? Does LF finally have a third line? Did Cathedral have talent very deep?
SCC is a lot like last year solid forwards who move the puck, a very solid defensive core and an expeirenced goaltender.
These two team have a lot in common
Sorry, didn't mean to raise your hackles. I'm very impressed with Schmidt by the way, he's a dominating presence on the ice. However, Hanowski has shown an incredible ability to score even with guys all over him. His goals in the STA game at state last March are a great example. Also, if Schmidt is on Hano the whole time, does it impact the offensive capability of his team?nipeshow18 wrote:mitedad- whoever said it would be easy? Someone brought up the point of shadowing him and I offered my thoughts. It may not be easy but I can bet ya if nate schmidt shadows him the entire game he doesn't go for 3 goals and 2 assists. It was just something to think about.

Mite dad is exactly right. Look at Hanowski's game against a much better STA team last year at state than this year's Cathedral team. Good luck shutting this kid down. The shadow may have held Hanowski to a few less points but i'm guessing Schmidt would've had the same downward curve. There is a reason why Hanowski is going to be considered heavily for Mr. Hockey. In the end they are both good players and teams. How about Sperl?Mite-dad wrote:Sorry, didn't mean to raise your hackles.
