St Thomas (0-0) @ Duluth Marshall (0-1) 12-06 3:30pm

Post by HShockeywatcher »

St Thomas makes the trek up to Duluth for their season opener. It will be Duluth Marshall's second game.

Building rivalry between these two teams. Although both teams have the goalies that led them to state, Duluth Marshall lost strong seniors and St Thomas lost strong seniors as well as Ryan Walters. These will be two much different teams than last year.

Broadcast

Post by mnsportsnetwork »

This game will be broadcast live on the Minnesota Sports Broadcast Network...check it out at www.mnsportsnetwork.com for more details.

We'll be announcing the rest of our December schedule in the next few days, but along with this game, we'll have the Hill-Murray/Edina game as well on the 6th. Should be a pretty entertaining day, with the re-matches of both the "A" and "AA" championship games!

Agreed. St Thomas crushed them at state last year and much of Marshall's power last year were seniors. St Thomas did lose 10 seniors, including their whole 1st line and 5 defensemen. Both will be much different teams this year.

Enough with the comments about Marshall being a top team...THEY AREN'T...the last few years they have been but i think some of these players need to realize that they will have to work much harder to be a top team again and if they don't it will be a long season.

Prediction:

Both teams are slightly down from previous years, but like always they will both be contenders by the end of the season and this game has developed into a pretty good rivalry.

St. Thomas will be strong up front like usual, and also the same goaltending last year will be back and stronger.... I watched a few of them play in Elite I and they looked very good. I dont know much about Marshall...

What about on defense? St Thomas lost 5 of their 7 defensemen on their roster from last year to graduation. Having the state winning goalie between the pipes will be nice, but a goalie can't do much without solid defense.

Yes that is true, but honestly, St. Thomas Academy usually finds a way to bring in good players, i think they will be ok....

marshall will be strong up front as usual, and as usual they will have more speed than the trunk an 85 olds in the fonduluth casino parking lot. the big question mark for the toppers is on the back end, they lost 7 d to graduation, the top 2 pairs will likely be stauber-bushey and williams-hurley. theres no doubt the D core will not have close to the same depth as last year. the stauber-bushey pair is really solid from what i hear, even though bushey is a freshman he plays like junior, and stauber has been great since his sophmore year, the hurley williams pair worries me. the one thing they have working for them is that they've played together the last 2 years so hurley is used to covering for williams mistakes. in goal they will be solid as usual, the loss of messina to denfeld hurts because now paul will likely play every game, possibly wearing him out, and in the event of an injury to paul there would not be such a steep drop off. Paul will be fine, this will be his thirf year of varsity experience and played all three games at state last year. this should be a very good game i dont see it being decided my more than a goal.

the cadets will be good again this year. they have another high powered first line and second line, a really good third line and a fourth line thatll get the job done. the deffense is young but talented and BOTH goalies are very good, one already has a state championship- enough said

Interested to hear who've they've brought in/moved up.
Pretty sweet that they meet DM right away.

I see both defenses struggling mightily in this game... both team's offenses have too much speed and firepower to be slowed down. Altrichter and Paul had better be on top of their game or this will be a very high scoring affair.

marshall better hope for a tie, after all only last year has one team won games in a row in this new rivalry
2005-3rd place game-Marshall
2006-championship game-STA
2007- regular season-tie
2007-state semi's-Marshall
2008- regular sesaon -Marshall
2008-championship game-STA

under this extermly flimsy reasoning you can see that if marshall ties or loses to STA then they will surely beat them when they meet in march

i think that both of these teams have lost a lot of talent and the game will be decided on who wants to play... last year i was at the game at STA when marshall won... St thomas didn't come to play and i don't think it will happen again. But, i hope for a Marshall victory but this game will come down to goaltending and defense. These teams have lost a lot of D from last year and it depends on who has the better ones this year. Does DM have a third pair of D? In order for marshall to win they need to go out fast and strong in the first period and score a few to keep st thomas from getting ahead early because that is what will keep STA from scoring. I wish i could go to this game in Duluth and watch it.

DM- 6 (including empty net)

STA- 4
When Hell freezes over, I'll play hockey there too.

Shots on the board were 39-20 STA, although I stopped counting after 5 they didn't count for STA.

Hats off to Willie Paul, he played an amazing game. Takes more than one hand to count the amazing saves he had tonight.
