I'm still trying to figure out why people have to worry about other parents kids?
Read my lips I've devoted blood, sweat and tears.
It just crack me up that people send their kids to a guy that never played the game, and can't even skate. This is why I hate, when people can get a coaching card for a game that they never played. I was at a recent try-out, saw a guy that I went to high school with asked him what he was doing there, and he said he was helping to pick the A Pee Wee team, the guy was a flipping wrestler, but let's give him a coahing certification card. Also heard a story from a member of the coaching clinics telling me that former North Star Brian Bellows needed a coaching certification card. ARE YOU KIDDING ME!
You people get suckered every year, on hockey camps, and hockey leagues, but the worst of all is Summer Team try-outs during hockey season, are you kidding me, I would tell these summer teams forget it, I've seen to many kids get burnt out for all this crap. Just getting teed off, Tommy getting screwed at try-outs, have you people thought that maybe Tommy didn't try hard enough, and for those who are picking these teams around Minneasota, don't take it out on Mommy and Daddy, because you don't get along, if Tommy belongs on an A Team so be it.
I have had Enough. Sorry for VENTING.

I just get sick and tired of all the bull crap when it comes to hockey, and the people that have never played the game, and they become experts. I don't like women on hockey association boards, they never have played the game, however if it's Krissy Wendall or Nat Darwitz I'm ok with it. Tell me if I'm wrong. I have been coaching for 20 plus years now, and I still get fed up with all the political crap. Done venting. Thanks

Don't forget the chocolate chip cookies. And the tuna-noodle hotdish. We do those things, too.tomASS wrote:I agree lily ......surprised?Lily Braden wrote:Um. There must be more to the story...A coach of 20 years going off like you are right now? Come on spill...You know there are coaches at every level, you know that you didn't need to play the sport in order to coach it. You know that there are plenty of coaches out there that played at higher levels to suck at being coaches....What is the real story?
And for the record, I will tell you. You are wrong.

Oh God! You do hotdish? I think that is becoming a lost art even here in MN. Everything is good in life when you have a good hot dishLily Braden wrote:Don't forget the chocolate chip cookies. Neanderthal on Skates

You're wrong! You were obviously hit in the head by too many hockey pucks. I don't know know any ex-hockey player or coach who qualifies as a good board member when their only claim to fame is that they played the game or coached hockey. The ex-hockey players I do know who are competent board members are skilled in business, law or accounting. More importantly, the skilled board members I know and respect have open minds and are good listeners. Equally as important, they know how to successfully navigate political waters and build a consensus among divergent groups, including women. As a result, skilled board members (men and women) successfully manage multi-million dollar nonprofit businesses, i.e., large hockey associations, even though many of them have never played the game. In case you haven't figured it out, most of the better managed hockey associations are run by business types, not coaches who have no use for women volunteers, unless, of course, the women are needed to serve beer and transport the kids to and from the rink.
In contrast, most poorly managed hockey associations are managed by ex-puck-heads who have no significant business skills, but who think they know everything because they played or coached hockey. Although I never played the game, I observe my son's practices and watch his games. To date, I haven't observed any of my son's hockey coaches (some of which have been behind the bench for 20+ years) teaching him about business management, business law or accounting practices. I, on the other hand, have learned the rules of the game, strategies and systems. While I would never volunteer to coach because I know the limits of my skill set, I do know the Minnesota Non-profit Corporations Act, my Association's by-laws and handbook ( I wrote the handbook) and Minnesota Hockey's by-laws.
Taz, I suggest you crawl out from behind the bench and crawl back into your cave. While I give you points for your honesty about women, you live in the 21st century old man, not the 1950s. Face it, Taz, the world has changed, but you're still skating (coaching) on old ice. Stop whining and suck it up.

Cookies, hot dish and association management
TomAss,Does this mean Lily isn't going to make me hot dish or cookies ?
If you continue to post witty blurbs, Lily may still make cookies AND hot dish for you, but first she has to meet with her association's accountants, prepare team ice schedules, draft last month's meeting minutes and rough up a self-appointed know-it-all coach who is clearly wrong. Go Lily go!
Re: Cookies, hot dish and association management
just when you think you've had enough hockey to last for years, when the last thing you want to do is think about hockey...you get reminded why you do it in the first place. The people. Not the bad one's that get too much attention, but the good ones. The ones that get it. Take a bow folks (or a curtsy lily) you are the besthockey_is_a_choice wrote:TomAss,Does this mean Lily isn't going to make me hot dish or cookies ?

Lily, if I could get your hot dish recipe, we'll put it in our hockeymom cookbook, and than we'll make TA cough up some of that money he's saving on college tuition
Listen, I did come off as a complete idiot on the whole women should not be on hockey association boards, I guess my problem comes from people who have kids trying out, and we need to take Tommy over Jimmy, because his mom is on the board, to me this isn't fair. This happened to me years ago, I guess I should have asked if there were any people going through this now? Again I apologize for being a complete butt head. Sorry Ladies. Thank you for all you do. One more thing, there are coaches out there good and bad, but let's get the qualified ones first, Agreed!

Don't worry about it...I don't think anybody here thought you were really going to go Taliban on hockeymoms (after all, there would be no hockey PLAYERS, without hockeymoms).taz10 wrote:Listen, I did come off as a complete idiot on the whole women should not be on hockey association boards, I guess my problem comes from people who have kids trying out, and we need to take Tommy over Jimmy, because his mom is on the board, to me this isn't fair. There will always be shenanigans on hockey boards and I agree, it does sometimes suck. But if your kid is having fun, take a deep breath, bite your tongue and enjoy the season. Next year may be better. It goes by too fast to stay upset.

I'm a man - since when do we read or follow instructions? If the recipe book has lots of pictures that I can drool over ......I'm in!DMom wrote:

A couple of points...First, I don't know BM's hockey background, but I DO know that he is a hockey player. A friend of mine plays in a league with him and says that he is pretty good.taz10 wrote:It just crack me up that people send their kids to a guy that never played the game, and can't even skate. Second point, playing the game doesn't necessarily make someone a good coach, and not playing the game shouldn't disqualify someone, either. A few examples to illustrate my point: Ken Hitchcock, coach of the Columbus BlueJackets has never played the game, can barely skate, yet he's coached a team to a Stanley Cup victory. Mark Loahr, coach of the Totino Grace Varsity team never EVER played hockey, but runs a very solid program. There are also plenty of people that were very good hockey players, but can't coach worth a lick.
