Edina doubles the Fun
On the Edina site today, word that the Edina Hockey Association will field 2 Squirt A teams, 2 U12A teams, and 2 U14A teams. They will be unbalanced with D6's blessing.

thx
Yesterday I noticed the site said that the Mite teams will be registered with USA Hockey, allowing Edina's Mites to play teams from other communities. That clearly looks like it was done in response to the Mite Parents' Choice program running at Minnesota Made.

I'm not sure that's such a great idea..but it will be fun for those new hockey parents.O-townClown wrote:Yesterday I noticed the site said that the Mite teams will be registered with USA Hockey, allowing Edina's Mites to play teams from other communities. I watched some of the mite 3-3 at the super rink last weekend and listening to Dads yelling at there 7-8 yr olds from the stands to "pick it up" and so forth.

Then the kids get off the ice and head straight for the bubble gum pinball machine. boy oh boy!

I can see Edina's decision on the girls side. Their girls program is probably twice the size of the next closest in the state. Even if they had two balanced A teams they would still be able to beat 80+% of the teams they will meet. They are definitely a girls program to envy and the model that I would like to duplicate.

And the kids are thinking, "but I haven't dropped anything, have I"?Can't Never Tried wrote:

Can't we have one hour blocks of "Skate N Shoot" (a/k/a "Stick N Puck") at the rinks where you can just go mess around. It is meant to replicate outdoor ice experiences. There is one boy who is an outstanding Pee Wee. His game would hold up well in Minnesota, Detroit, Massachusetts, or Ontario. He's this good because he's pushed incredibly hard by his father. Can't Never Tried wrote: I watched some of the mite 3-3 at the super rink last weekend and listening to Dads yelling at there 7-8 yr olds from the stands to "pick it up" and so forth.![]()
Anyway, they are at SnS daily. ??? I took my son once and they got a scrimmage going. The dad, his son, and a couple kids from his Squirt team last season. No kidding, TWO goalies. A little cross-ice action. They invited a 7-year-old and my son (then 5) to play. It looked fun and was a little park-style game, on perfect ice WITH GOALIES.
My son likes everything, so I assume he's having a blast. The dad is REAL enthusiastic. Yelling a lot, which I assume is encouragement.
The hour ends and my son whispers to me as I'm taking off his gear, "daddy, I don't like him!" as he points at the dad. "He yells at me." I assume my son mistook something and that the guy that went to the effort to put the game together and tried to help my son by getting him the puck is really a good guy.
We go back a few days later. They're there - because they are ALWAYS there - and my son told me I had to go on the ice with him. (I hate SNS, and I sure don't like paying $10 to do something I hate.) Five minutes into it they get a similar game going, 'just' one goalie this time. Sho' 'nuff, this guy is YELLING at my kid! Who just started playing hockey that year. Just started skating, for that matter.
"C'mon, we gotta MOVE THE PUCK!" It wasn't encouragement at all. And it didn't stop. Any time I got the puck I'd do whatever I wanted to get it to my son so he could play too. The 2nd year Squirts (age 10) would quickly take it from the 5-year-old, but anyway.
I'm not sure how some could be so excitable that they'd yell at a kid they didn't even know during a cross-ice scrimmage at what amounts to a park session.

TWO A TEAMS
hopefully having two A teams doesn't double the depression of the B parent

It is about time! I'm glad they finally see light. Development is more important that winning at this age.NotEasyBeingGreen wrote:On the Edina site today, word that the Edina Hockey Association will field 2 Squirt A teams, 2 U12A teams, and 2 U14A teams. They will be unbalanced with D6's blessing.
Interesting that they are feeling the pressure from Minnesota Made on the Squirt side, but why the move on the Girls side? And how long until Eden Prairie and Wayzata follow suit?
