EDINA for Titletown USA

So ESPN has this Titletown USA thing going, I was just wondering if anyone from EDINA, the greatest city in Minnesota, was going to nominate the locals for the right to call itself Titletown.

We can't exactly nominate our cities based off of professional or college sports, since this state is weak in that area (Wolves blow/ Twins blow/ Gophers basically blow).

But for youth and high school titles of all sorts...EDINA may be it.

Have we had a town that has won multiple titles one on top of the other??

Depends on the era.......I would see what Eveleth and International Falls has to say about being title town first.

Yeah, their streaks in girls tennis are impressive. Seriously, the only city in Minnesota that can even think of being Titletown for HS sports is Edina.

well i dont think its eveleth cause they suck. And the falls doesnt have the numbers. but it surely isnt edina. and what about roseau?

You're right. It surely can't be Edina. They only have the most HS state titles in hockey and in all sports combined.

Edina is good along with all the other cities teams because they have twice or more the enrollment at their school. I am not trying to make excuses or anything but look at roseau they have not that many kids there and they still find a way to dominate other teams. If you look at all titles yeah of course a school like edina will have a lot but if you look at hockey roseau has dominated since the begining.

In hockey yes, but after that it's not so easy. Edina as a whole has 116 state team titles which is less than Minneapolis' 130+. Edina H.S. is different than Edina East, and certainly different than Edina West. I know the lineage and that Edina high became East then went back again to Edina high but Minneapolis has had schools come and go as well. Also Edina (East) has more girls team titles than boys 54-52 where in Minneapolis only 6 team titles have been won by girls. Finally if you take away 1 sport, tennis, Edina falls well back into "titletown" territory as 45 of Edina's titles occur in that 1 sport.

Has Edina won the most team titles? No, Minneapolis has.
Has Edina H.S. won more team titles than any other H.S.? Yes, though in largely fringe sports with the fewest number of participating schools.

I don't know the mpls count. Edina is at 124 and is adding on a lot faster than mpls. If they are behind, it won't be for long.

No one is making an issue of HS names / multiple schools. It is titletown, not titleschool. Your caveat about girls titles and tennis titles is just an excuse. A HS sports title is a HS sports title.

Plus Ric Flair's from Edina, and he's a 16 time Heavyweight Wrestling Champion.

Nominate who you like, Edina actually has a chance to earn the ESPN moniker.

EP and Edina hockey not far apart in talent. EP youth teams are stronger. Edina keeps their talent to play in Edina versus private schools.
EP football would walk all over Edina (fact)
EP baseball is better.
EP basketball is better.
As for the girls sports. EP is VERY dominant.

You have to give EP credit and consideration. Just take a look at the last 20 years of high school sports.

eden prarie has twice the enrollment as edina, i have no idea why they dont split the high school up. this is just like the minneapolis argument. and i can make a strong case for edina YOUTH football being better than eden praries, and edina YOUTH baseball and basketball being better. edina is catching up in those sports, and your not even considering edina's most dominant sports (tennis, and swimming). so ya theres an argument for edina.

The biggest power in Minnesota, they have won 91 state crowns since 1950, including 31 in the last 10 years.

I think your SI link fits your style better. It doesn't have any reasoning to the choice. Did they throw a dart at a map?

Edina High achieves national sports honor

Edina High School’s success in Minnesota prep sports has been well documented locally for many years.
Last week, subscribers to Sports Illustrated magazine learned of Edina’s dominance when the local school’s athletic program was ranked eighth best in the nation.
“How did they find out about us?” said Edina athletic director Steve Dove. “When people from the magazine talked to people around Minnesota, Edina was often the first school mentioned. I faxed Sports Illustrated a sheet on our 119 state championships.”
While Edina has won state titles in virtually every sport, tennis leads the way. The Edina girls tennis program has a total of 23 state titles and a streak of eight in a row. The boys tennis program is close behind with 21 titles.
In the past 10 years, the girls Alpine skiing program has been in the spotlight with seven state championships since 1997.
“I asked the people at Sports Illustrated if they would consider putting a Hornet on the cover last week,” Dove quipped. “But they chose Randy Moss instead.
“This recognition is a real tribute to our community – the parents, all of our students past and present, and our coaches.
“From the day the school opened in the fall of 1949 till today, the Hornets, and for a short time the Edina-West Cougars, have built a tradition that everyone can be proud of.
“The most important thing we do in the Athletic Department is hire the best coaches we can,” Dove continued. “We want to make high school sports a fun, positive experience for our kids.”
Dove said one of his proudest moments as athletic director was the day Edina won its 100th state team championship. It happened to be a boys tennis title.
“We had a community celebration and many people turned out for the event,” he said.
Sports Illustrated named the best 25 high school sports programs in the country and also named the best in each of the 50 states.
The No. 1 high school sports program in America, according to the magazine, is Long Beach Polytechnic High School, the alma mater of notables such as Billie Jean King, the pro tennis star, and NFL all-pros Gene Washington and Willie McGinest.
It is estimated that Sports Illustrated reaches an audience of 20 million adults a week, Dove said. The athletic director added that he is pleased to get the recognition for the school.
“Now that we’ve been in Sports Illustrated, we’re not worried about a jinx,” said Dove referring to folklore that athletes appearing on the cover of the magazine often falter in competition in the coming weeks.
Dove said one reason he feels Edina’s success will continue is the quality of the coaches in the program. He also said the multi-sport participation of Edina’s athletes keeps the machine humming.
“It has been an exciting week here,” said Dove. “In addition to Sports Illustrated hitting the newsstands, our new football coach, Kim Nelson, was here to meet with the players and many from the community. I think we had about 350 people here last night [May 12].”

Lol..... things change in three years. That's not current. Look at my link. That is from 2008. Yours is from 2005.

While it cannot be argued that Edina has won more state championships from every sport than Eden Prairie one has to remember that Eden Prairie is a relatively new city. Eden Prairie wasn't a powerhouse in the 60s/70s/80s/early 90s. Edina has been a top notch 'burb for decades. Eden Prairie for a couple. Maybe SI realized that and said eventually (fifty years?) down the line, when EP has had the same time frame at the same level of Edina, they will be the best.
