More Baseball?!

Seriously?

I love me some baseball... but this is probably a little overkill, no? I think they may be overlooking the fact that there's going to be a new park in town in 2010, so I've got to think their timing couldn't be any worse on this. They should've got the ball rolling a couple years ago to develop a fan base of some sort before the Twins' new park opens.

Besides, it's probably only a matter of time before the Gophers get a new park - and will probably end up sharing it with the Saints. I just don't know that they can make it work in Burnsville, can they?

Not sure about support from the Metro, but i know the RedHawks in Fargo would sure love a Northern League team in the area. With the Northern League down to six teams, the closest one to Fargo is in Winnipeg. The rest are scattered througout the midwest. I know they are finding it hard to get players into that league with the hellacious amount of time spent on a bus nowadays. There have also been rumors flying around that the Northern and the American Leagues would have some kind of merger to help cut down on travel costs.

If they do it right, it should succeed.

There is still plenty of interest in low cost, quality, family entertainment outside in the summer time. Low minor league baseball in that area would be welcomed and supported.

If its a first class facility, it will do fine.

I dont think the Twins new stadium effects this kind of venture. The 2 things are on different planes.

If it gets done, we will go from 0 to 2 first class baseball facilities which would be great and quite a change but not overkill.

I'm not complaining... if they get it done, I'll show up to check it out. I just wonder if this is a good business move for these guys. Like I say, if ever there was a bad time to try this idea in the metro area, this would be it. It may work, and minor league fans can be die-hard... the Saints have a loyal group of fans that probably couldn't care less about the Twins' new park, but honestly, I have to think they're going to be a footnote in the local sports scene with the timing. And again, at some point in the not too distant future, I'm willing to bet John Anderson will get a new Gopher park figured out, and that'll be another obstacle to deal with for the "Metro Millers".

Much as I hate to say it, maybe something soccer related might be a better idea from a financial standpoint. Put up a 10,000 seat stadium and drag the Thunder down or try and land an MLS team, and use it for kids/high school on the other days. Also, there aren't really any good outdoor concert venues in town - so a soccer venue could double as that. They'd be the only game town... except maybe for TCF Stadium.

Ah screw it... put up a movie theater and a Buffalo Wild Wings.

Like PB said...did I just say that?... I think they are drawing on two different planes. Heck when that new Twins stadium opens my college bankroll might not make it worth it to go to a game. If they make it cheap and fun, people will come.

The Thunder are renovating the field at the NSC so soccer is probably out the window. They are making it nice there and it should be their home for quite awhile. I think the S Metro could benefit from a baseball team, not a bad idea if they don't overkill it right away.

maybe they should think about incorporating a Sonic into the facility to at least draw a crowd. Heard the overtime pay for traffic control is starting to add up big time in the ER area because of the must have burgers. Maybe they should also include a roadside sobriety test upon exiting the joint to help add revenue.

but now if we only had a real professional soccer team that upgrade would be worth the drive from out here near SD. Too Disney Like- needs to be like the Kicks at the old Met Stadium.

I can't believe I'm going to say this, but did the gophers baseball team ever get a new facility? That would be a higher priority in my book, but I know I am not comparing apples to apples.

They're still in the fundraising stages. Sounds more an more like they'll put it either on or right next to the existing Siebert Field if they get the loot together, which is a mistake in my book. I still think they should try to come up with a joint park with the Saints on or near the St. Paul Campus. It would more certainly offset costs by splitting it with another team and using existing land which will include PARKING since Siebert has none!!!

Whats the criteria? What if another kid pitches a 4 hit shutout? Ban him from pitching too? How many hits/runs do you have to give up before they let you pitch?

When I heard this on ESPN this morning, I wasn't quite sure why this was even a story... and I still don't.

I think the team who packed up and quit was incredibly lame, but if the kid's got enough talent to play up a level and the league will let him do it, what's the problem? Isn't that a good thing?

If there's any problem here is this kid's parents (or mom). They're missing a big opportunity for Junior. Just shut up and let him play with the 10 year olds. If the other parents are just going to whine and cry about how good he is among 9 year olds, let him play with the older kids and accelerate his learning curve... see how much they like it when her kid is playing varsity ball in 8th grade and the rest of their snot nosed punks don't see the field till 11th or 12th.

The mom just needs to do what's right by the kid and let him play instead of dragging him through her righteous "we need to take a stand" crap. She's hurting him in the long run. STFU.

IDK that's a pretty big jump to expect a 9 yr old to move up to 10 yr old league

I mean they're probably already chewing at 10 yrs

Nobody should have to do anything except shut up and play ball.

The kid is 9. Its an age group based program. 9s play with 9s.

It doesnt matter how good he is.

Why should his mom or anybody else make him play with another group?

These people are wacko.

Dominant players are as much a part of participation in sports as anything else. Always been that way and always will be unless these wacked out manipulative parents get their way.

I say let him play - New Haven is just outside NYC, are they going soft on us fogedabotit

Not that I know anything about baseball but tell the kids to choke up and try to put the ball in play or crowed the plate and take one for the team
wussies.

I think I could hit the kid as long as he doesn't have a curve ball
