As usual the MSHSL site is unclear on how the coop works. It just says that coops may affect the enrollment figures, but does not explain it.

Coop's count all students in the schools involved. They used to count percentages but have gone to all students attending.

I think Johson dropping down would do wonders for their program. Can you imagine what the eastside would be like if they won a section & returned to state...albiet, the JV tourney. Playing an average schedule and losing in the first round of sections does little for a youth program. Success breeds success. Take a step back, experience success, then build from there. When the interest increases so will the numbers & with numbers comes the opportunity for more talent. Then once it reaches that level, opt back up & be a factor at the AA level. Their current plan offers little hope, a change in plans gives a program a chance. Programs like SSP & Johnson will benefit with a change in direction.

City hockey is dying, and Class A won't help. Demographics, costs, and private recruiters are killing it. I don't see any answer. Truly sad.

for me a better chance at the state tourny would be best at A for Johnson.
Seeing SSP move down to A a few years back i thought was a joke, but they went to the tourny and have been more competetive in A than AA

I see similarities between SSP and Johnson, former rivals, former powers, now on harder times

the difference between the top A and AA teams is not as big of a gap as 10 years ago

If i get to see say Johnson, Greenway, SSP, etc in the A state tourny, i'm all for it

Its good for former powers to be relevant, kind of like the NHL needing the original 6 to be good to get TV ratings, etc

the year SSP went to the state tourney recently is a good story...it was the first year they backed it down to class A....that year they had like 12 or 13 seniors,a junior goalie who went on to UMD and another junior that was their best player....they were either champions,or co-champions of the conference and WOULD HAVE WENT TO STATE AT CLASS AA THAT SEASON.....that was Tartans first trip to state instead....somewhat ironic to me....since then,less than ho-hum....

From the MSHSL website:
Enrollments and free and reduced lunch numbers are obtained from the Minnesota department of Education. Per the board of directors policy here are how enrollments are then figured....
* A schools actual enrollment is used
*40% of the schools F/R lunch count will be subtracted from the actual enrollment
*the result will determine the MSHSL enrollment

So if Central High has 2000 students of which 1000 are on the F/R lunch program, then 40% of the 1000 are subtracted from the original enrollment of 2000. So 2000-400 equals 1600 which will be Central High's "enrollment" for MSHSL classifiacation purposes.

The enrollments posted on the MSHSL website are adjusted enrollments. The MDE lists Johnson's enrollment at 1639, the MSHSL lists it at 1186.
