The story we were told as students was that right away West didn't originally have a mascot or nickname. When they first fielded a football team (presumably right after building the school), the radio announcers didn't know what to call the team. Since they were wearing red jerseys, the announcers called them the Scarlet team. It stuck. So, yes, a Scarlet is, in fact, the color.
