Re: good call
Nerd, I recall Mark Osiecki blocking a ton of rubber in HS, at Wisconsin, and for the Flames. Of all the HS players I saw, the finest shotblocker by far.Nostalgic Nerd wrote:
I seem to remember one of the keys to the '86 final was B'villes ability to block a lot of shots. Their defensemen did quite a bit of sliding to help their goalie out.

Nut
I'm confused.SEMinnHockeyNut wrote:Don't forget that Burnsville also graduated Kevin Gorg in 1985....he was obviously so good that even Kevin could not name his replacement Tom Dennis.
Burnsville's 1986 team featured three D-1 players in Scott Bloom, Lance Werness, and Mark Osiecki, not to mention a very good D-II play in Dan Brettschneider, who played at Mankato. The Burnsville team was also loaded.
The 7-5 game was a classic. Right when Burnsville made it tight, the Hill coach used the old 'jewelry rule' and got Burnsville a penalty when the game was 6-5. Scott Bloom had the last laugh. Such a great moment after he got the hat trick on the empty-netter - going over to hug his coach and looking out at the defeated private school.
1986 Quarter (2) Duluth Denfeld (18-6) (5) Bloom. Jefferson (14-8-1) 4-2
(1) Burnsville (17-5-1) (4) South St Paul (15-8-1) 7-4
(3) Hill-Murray (22-2) (6) Richfield (12-11-1) 5-3
(7) Hibbing (21-2) (8) Bemidji (19-3-1) 4-3
Semis (1) Burnsville (18-5-1) (2) Duluth Denfeld (19-6) 3-1
(3) Hill-Murray (23-2) (7) Hibbing (22-2) 5-4
Finals (1) Burnsville (19-5-1) (3) Hill-Murray (24-2) 4-1
Burnsville won the final 4-1. They lost at Christmas about 7-5 after being down about 6-1 at 2nd intermission.
Are you saying he had an empty-netter at the Civic Center in the 4-1 game? The year before they beat Hill in the final too but it was a one-goal game.

Sorry
Sorry, just read your post closer. Seems like you are describing two games in the one paragraph. I didn't make the transition at first. Gotcha. (I think!)
7-5 sound right to you? It has been 22 years and I'm just going by memory.

Sorry was rambling....yes, the Christmas game was 7-5.
And the final did have an empty-netter by Bloom for the hat trick.
I have that game (along with many others from the 80's) on VHS. I would like to get them on DVD even if they lose some quality.
Most of Burnsville's goals were things of beauty - great use of odd man rushes, using time and space, and a guy going hard to the net.
That was a very special tourney just because of the Richfield story, Stauber for Denfeld, and the Hill/B-Ville rivalry.
Hill and B-Ville met in the finals in 83, 85, and 86. They also played in the consolation semis in 84. Burnsville won 3 of those 4 games.

MAYO SPARTANS!
2000 State Rated #1 Elk River goes up AFAICR 4-0 over Osseo after a little over 4 minutes into the game. Osseo calls time out, coach says something like "Come on guys, this is the seniors last game. Just go out and have fun." Osseo wins 5-4!!!!! Has to be the biggest upset ever if you start counting after 4 minutes into the game! (Osseo then loses to Blaine who then wins the state tourney).Doc Holliday wrote:-Richfield beating Edina in the Section VI semifinals in 1986.
-Osseo beating Elk River, Section 4AA semis in 2000.
-Edina beating Eden Prairie, Section 6AA in 2000 (4 OT's, also known as the "Season's Over Game")
-White Bear Lake beating Hill-Murray, 1996 Section 3AA
-Apple Valley bouncing Holy Angels, 2006 Section 5AA semis
-B'Ville bouncing Holy Angels, 2007 Section 5AA finals
Most of the upsets seem to occur in the sections. Even a state tournament "upset" isn't as large. The '97 title win by Edina, while an upset, was still accomplished by a team that only had 3 losses all season. We're not exactly talking 1980 Team USA with that one.

- Amazing!
On paper it should have never happened but on the rink anything can and it did on this cold night in March at the old Met Center.

SSP upsets Edina West 1981
South St Paul's 1981 2-1 win over Edina West was an incredible upset. As an Eastie I hated West and they had never been able to get past us and make it the Tournament. And when they finally did, they were upset in dramatic fashion with the tying goal disallowed because time ran out (if my hazy memory recalls correctly).
