Section 1AA final- Lakeville South vs. Lakeville North

Post by Prodigy »

Lakeville South(13-11-3) vs. Lakeville North(8-16-3)

This will be the third time these two rivals from Lakeville have played eachother and the first two games weren't even close. South dominated North both games this season but you never know when the season is on the line. If North can pull of the upset they might have the worst record ever(9-16-3) in the state tournament. What are your predictions?

Mine:
South-4
North-1

Record wise - I certainly hope it's South.

If Anoka wins the 7AA title, that will put just one outstate team in the AA tourney.

The overall records of these 1AA representatives is atrocious. 13-13-1 v. 8-16-2. It's mind boggling to think that one of them will actually go to state.

My question is could either of these teams win a game in the class A tournament?

They probably could but neither would be at state if they played in section 1A.

I hope South makes it because they are hot right now and I would like to see what they could do at state. They have out scored their opponents 17-0 in sections so far and are 9-2-1 in their last 12 games. They have a great goalie, stellar defence and an offense that has been putting a lot of goals on the board lately which is a pretty good combo to pull of an upset at state. I'm telling ya if they aren't given any respect and it seems like the rest of the state has already written the 1AA winner as a 2 and out at state, they will give who ever they play a run if not pull off an upset. What ever happens I would like to congradulate coach weber and the South boys on the dramatic turn around. 2 years ago they won 1 game, this year they look state bound.

Wouldnt it be the greatest if 1AA beat Roseau or Edina or someone like that that everyone is expecting to role to the finals. I would laugh so hard it would be awesome.

you said it perfectly...9-2-1 in the last 12.... one loss to Burnsville after leading that game for sometime, and a 2-0 loss in the season finale in a game that meant nothing...South is also a team that has beat the #1 seed in 3AA, Rosemount...

If they make state, by no means are they the favorite, but when you have the goaltending South does....and they are hot...they could upset anyone.

For the love of hockey as we know it...South has to win this game.
Because like Century last year...they are the ONLY team from 1AA that has a snowballs chance of giving anyone a game at state.

Unlike many on this site, I support the idea of it being a STATE tourney and not simply a top 8 ranked team tourney.
Yes section 1AA has struggled at state in the recent past...but david vs. goliath ...North vs. Metro...public vs. private...thats the beauty of the state tourney at least in the first round!!!

You could argue that having the Lakeville schools(metro) in 1AA is not really a true South representative, but thats a whole other thing.

..and I'll second Prodigy's congrats to the BOYS at South...they have battled and stuck with it for three years in most cases and they deserve this opportunity , but their sucess has come despite their lack of quality coaching.

Ask most players/parents at south or north and coaching will never come up in the same sentance as team success.

actually I do know a lot of parents in Lakeville because I have recently moved there and it seems to me that while Schmitz at North is not well-liked, Weber at South has done a great job so far. You can't turn a 2-24 team two years ago into state tournament team without SOME quality coaching. Also, watch them play, they are a very disciplined team. Regardless, congrats to the whole program...

Congrats to South for the turn around.
However, that 2-24 team had no seniors and most of their best players bolted to private schools.

You can if your in section 1AA...not any really anywhere else.

As a newbie...I understand your opinion, but spend time watching the games and the coaching line decisions etc.. spend time with parents/players at the high school level or any of those who have bailed from the community. The high school coaches are not the worst around and their actually pretty decent guys with a great deal of hockey knowledge...but knowledge of a subject does not make you a great teacher...teaching/coaching goes way beyond x's and o's.

Lakeville has excellent youth #'s and skill, excellent youth coaches, Many of whom would coach circles around the high school coaches.

Lakeville will continue to be a feeder program as long as the status quo remains in power.

All I know is that if Webber looses to Schmitz the South crowd should start chanting "Start the U-Haul" cause it's time to move.

I appologize to all South Boys and supporters for straying off topic and into the Lakeville coahing problems...just feel like most in the programs talk and talk about these issues around the rink for years and then don't take it any where because they're afraid of ruining things for their kids, unitl their only option is to go private. and it saddens me to see all the great kids who leave the programs as well as all the great kids that get stuck behind having to pick up the pieces.

GOOD LUCK TO BOTH TEAMS, I will be pulling for SOUTH in this one...but no offense to the great kids at NORTH...it's just SOUTH's turn and they have worked a little harder to earn this season.

I Hope South becomes the first team from Lakeville to win in the first round at state, even if it will probably mean that Webber will be the coach until he retires.

well I guess I have got a very different feel from what I have seen and heard in the community. I guess I just don't see how they are such bad coaches when the south's program is on the rise and a lakeville team has made to state in '02, '03, '04, '06, and now again one of them will make it in '08. But, I think your right and that we shouldn't be talking about the coaches. Lets keep this thread to predictions for the game, I can't wait to see this one, I'm going to make the trip down to the REC center to watch it.

I'll make the trip as well....

As far as state appearances...you must be new to following high school hockey....research this forum regarding section 1AA and most of the teams that make it from 1AA in comparison to the other 7 sections in the tourney

It might open your eyes as to the "great " lakeville teams that have made it to state.

Also ask yourself, with that kind record and chances for opportunites to play at the state tourney level....why do all the best players leave for private schools? Not just a few....but bunches of players, players who are trading a ton of icetime at an early age (soph, junior) for a chance to have to fight for time at privates??? HMMMMMM

Section 1AA Boys Hockey | Lakeville South 4, Rochester Mayo 0

Post-Bulletin, Rochester MN

Lakeville South found its rhythm early in the first two periods. Rochester Mayo never found its rhythm.

The result was a 4-0 victory for South over the Spartans in a Section One, Class AA boys hockey tournament semifinal game at the Rochester Recreation Center on Saturday.

The top-seeded Cougars (13-11-2) controlled play and the scoreboard from the opening drop of the puck. South outshot No. 5 seed Mayo 34-12, including 23-6 over the first two periods. The Spartans were unable to generate many quality scoring chances and had their season come to an end at 15-11-1.

South advances to the section championship game, which is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday at the Rec Center. It will be an all-Lakeville title game, as Lakeville North topped Owatonna 3-2 in Saturday's other section semifinal.

Saturday’s game was the second meeting between the teams in a three-week span. Mayo had South on the ropes on Feb. 1 at Graham Arena, but the Spartans let a 4-2 lead slip away in the final minute and settled for a 4-4 tie.

“We outplayed them and had more chances the first time,” Mayo coach Lorne Grosso said. “We felt it could have been a 6-2 game, but (South) deserved to win today.”

The game-winning goal came just 1 minute, 33 seconds into the game. South’s Lukas Allen picked up a puck that trickled through the feet of a Mayo defenseman and put a wrist shot past Spartans junior goalie Jordan Yaggy.

Two minutes later Nick Bailey one-timed a feed from Chris Cass past Yaggy for a 2-0 Cougars lead. Bailey was alone in the slot and Yaggy (30 saves) had little chance to react to his shot.

“Yaggy played well,” Grosso said. “There wasn’t much he could’ve done on most of those goals.”

Brandon Binder scored 1:33 into the second period and Bill Simon capped the scoring with 50 seconds remaining in the second.

“There was nothing here (Saturday) we didn’t expect,” Grosso said. “We just gave them too many easy ones and the kids didn’t respond to what they needed to do.”

The loss closed the high school careers of six Mayo seniors – the line of captain Tony Schultz, Jared Penz and Garrett Powers; defensemen Mitch Anderson and Travis Schubauer, and goalie Matt Steinmetz.

“Schultz really came on this year,” Grosso said. “He was the most valuable player on the team as far as always working hard. I’d put him out there all the time; he wins a lot of battles.

“Penz was another one of our MVPs. He didn’t play a lot until recently, but he was always positive, cheering the guys on. This was a very tight team.”

Mayo will return a talented class of 13 juniors next season. Asked what he wants that group to work on over the summer, Grosso said: “I don’t want them to wait until the summer. I want them to start tomorrow, start thinking about who might beat you out if you don’t put the work in.”

____________

P-B’s 3 STARS

1. Josh Hofstad, South: The senior defenseman had three assists, including setting up the game-winner just 3:33 into the game.

2. Brandon Binder, South: Binder scored his first goal of the season 1:33 into the second period to give the Cougars a 3-0 lead.

3. Tony Schultz, Mayo: Showed the hustle and work ethic that made him a team captain on every shift, including late in the game when Mayo had little chance to come back.

LAKEVILLE SOUTH 4, MAYO 0

First period – 1. LS, Lukas Allen 10 (Josh Hofstad 7) 3:33. 2. LS, Nick Bailey 4 (Chris Cass 9) 5:29. Second period – 3. LS, Brandon Binder 1 (Drew Brevig 11, Hofstad 8) 1:33. 4. LS, Bill Simon 15 (Hofstad 9, Binder 8) 16:10. Third period – No scoring.

It is too bad that this section will get the two-and-out hook again, but I also believe this is a state tourney. I miss the Regional brackets that weren't manipulated every two years (Anoka from Sect 7???).

Also throw a bone to Lakeville for splitting their school (unlike other unnamed suburban behemoths). A combined squad would probably be very competitive at state.

stpaulpuck, like I said earlier, don't write off the winner just yet. South has beat Rosemount, tied Jefferson, took Eden Prarie to OT, and has hung right with some of the top teams in the state. After starting the season 4-9-1 they have really been playing well ending with a 9-2-1 record. This is not the same team as the beginning of the year. But, go ahead and don't give them any respect if you want to, I would love to see a 1AA team win the first round two years in a row.
