Referee Experiences

Looks like I struck a nerve with the three blind mice! You clowns make me laugh with your spectulation, hope I don't see you clowns reffing any games I am involved in. Because I'll be able to spot the refs that think they rule the world and know one else is right, just like in these posts. I ref is always right, ya because he hold the power and like to abuse it.
I do like to stir the pot!

Haha, you wouldn't spot me, I don't ref mite games and that sounds like the only level you are qualified to coach.
Then again, I don't know if I'd want my child learning the fundamentals from you either if you can't skate.

Can't skate? still spectutating, at least my opinions have truth. It does'nt suprise me there are a bunch of refs TRYING (CRYING) to defend them selves.

the ref - Reggie, probably had a bad referee experience as a young ankle skater, when a referee violated his childhood by doing unthinkable things with the whistle to him.......calling him for an infraction of some sort which he was not guilty of.
If Reggie every did referee a game his hot air would melt the whistle.

Red Wing
What's the deal with ref's in RW, they all seem to be High School or younger. Usually it's not a good experience but recently we had two bantam kids do a Pee Wee game and they did a great job.

Marty, believe it or not that isn't all that uncommon. If those first year officials can get past working with unreasonable coaches, and less than respectable fans, many of them turn into good officials.Marty McSorely wrote:What's the deal with ref's in RW, they all seem to be High School or younger. It's unfortunate that more than half of those young first year officials hang up their whistles before getting that confidence and experience.

Tipical ref, blame it on the coaches and fans, if it wasn't for coaches, players, and fans, you'd be a judge at a figure skating competition! Oh theres an idea for you.inthestands wrote:Marty, believe it or not that isn't all that uncommon. So if you don't think it is any of those reasons what do you attribute the high attrition rate of youth referees in almost every sport?Reggie wrote: Tipical ref, blame it on the coached and fans, if it wasn't for coaches, players, and fans, you'd be a judge a figure skating competition! C'mon, look at his posts.........you know he doesn't think when he speaks.
Watched parts of 3 games tonight a 12u B game, PW B game, and a 12u A game.
The reffing was right on tonight, watched most of 12u B, half of the PW B game, and the end of the 12u A game.
Young ref in PW B game had a hard time with offsides, but nothing that mattered. It looked like a tough game to officate between 2 rivals a lot of extra stuff going on.

There we go! A job for Reggie in doing assessments. The old adage rings true here, "those that can't do, teach" We could gather all his assessments at the end of the year and file them accordingly

Reggie - I will give you Xbox is an underlying cause to laziness of kids now days, but it starts with the parents and how they manage the gamers.

I'm not even sure. Generally, I am very supportive of refs. They obviously are dedicated to the game and youth athletics or they wouldn't be out there. I love to see refs interact with the kids, my sons have gotten some nice pointers over the years from refs, instructing them on what is and what isn't a penalty. When they first start to check it's nice to get refs that will take the time to settle an overzealous kid down. But, has anyone ever watched a peewee game where there wasn't at least one penalty to call? No one was hurt, so in hindsight, the kids were allowed to play the game.
I know that Minnesota hockey is a volunteer experience, i know that well!!!
except during the spring and summer season, where I feel that the profiting entity has a duty to provide high quality refs, I wouldn't really dream of complaining. I appreciate the refs who stick with it, because i think what we pay a ref doesn't quite pay for the gas to get there unless they have more than one game in a row.
I guess I just wanted to know if the refs on the bored have ever reffed a peewee game and not called a penalty that resulted in someone being sent to the box. Maybe this is a common occurence. I think if it were we wouldn't need hep. I guess i'm not upset, just curious.
I have learned one lesson and that is the moms in the stands take the hits far more seriously than the boys on the ice.

I am a referee with 12 years of experience. I can tell you that I have indeed reffed a peewee game without calling a penalty (we call that a no hitterDMom wrote:I'm not even sure. But all in all it sounds like you guys had an enjoyable hockey game with little to no foul play last night, so that's a great job by the kids.
refs miss calls were all human!!!!! rarely does it have an impact on the final score. two things drive me crazy at hockey games. on the refs side of things its the ones that just cant figure out how to handle the goalie freeze. a kid will come in and poke at the puck not a slash a poke before the whistle even goes and gets a penalty. two minutes later same thing happens after the whistle no penalty. thats one area i see alot of inconsistancy with refs. the other thing that drives me crazy which just happend at a rams vs st cloud tech is some guy sitting behind you oh come on ref that was a trip! theirs a slash that was holding oh how about the interference! the crying goes on and on and on i wish just once i could record this and give it to the guy after the game and say listen to yourself please!!!!!! im watching the same game and i see all the things hes talking about on both sides its a hockey game with sticks... not one time did i hear oh we got away with one their.. talk about blind thank god that guys not reffing the game.
Bias will do that to people that are not pure fans that understand the game. They only see things that hinder their team from winning. If this was a high school game, I'd laugh if this guy actually thought that a couple more power plays was going to help Tech beat Roseau.watchdog wrote:refs miss calls were all human!!!!! rarely does it have an impact on the final score. two things drive me crazy at hockey games. on the refs side of things its the ones that just cant figure out how to handle the goalie freeze. a kid will come in and poke at the puck not a slash a poke before the whistle even goes and gets a penalty. two minutes later same thing happens after the whistle no penalty. thats one area i see alot of inconsistancy with refs. the other thing that drives me crazy which just happend at a rams vs st cloud tech is some guy sitting behind you oh come on ref that was a trip! theirs a slash that was holding oh how about the interference! the crying goes on and on and on i wish just once i could record this and give it to the guy after the game and say listen to yourself please!!!!!! im watching the same game and i see all the things hes talking about on both sides its a hockey game with sticks... not one time did i hear oh we got away with one their.. talk about blind thank god that guys not reffing the game.
Ref's tossing kids
Spent time at the Wayzata U16/JrGold B tournament this past weekend. I have NEVER seen so many kids thrown out of games for trivial infractions. I understand a need to keep a game under control, but tossing 2 kids for jostling in front of the net 6 minutes into a game is a bit much. No punches thrown, no vulgarity used, just a few shoves. Both given 2 minute minors for roughing and tossed. This is Junior Gold!! This was after the same set of ref's tossed two boys in the previous game for similiar infractions. So maybe it was a bad day. Sunday, same thing Championship game 5-6 minutes into the game, kid gets tossed for a cross check, 5 minutes major given. Centennial scores 1 in that 5 minutes. Final score 1-0. So did the ref have a hand in the final score???could be.

Good question about the refs having a hand in the final score.Stars wrote:Spent time at the Wayzata U16/JrGold B tournament this past weekend. First we have to remember there are specific rules for Jr Gold level games that give more leeway to the officials due to some behavior issues that "can" exist. I've seen more kids thrown out of Jr Gold games than any other level, and from personal experience it is a measure to keep the game in line.
I'm not sure how anyone but the players and officials would know if there were any harsh or vulgar words spoken.
A different question I have is, if these same officials were known for calling a "tight" game, shouldn't the teams have been aware of this from previous days games? If a major for cross checking was given, doesn't the player that took the penalty have more of a hand in the outcome? Just a view from a different side. Not right or wrong, just different.
There are many different levels of responsibility through out a hockey game. At the top level, it starts at home and moves on down the line from there. Somewhere toward the bottom I would say the game officials come into play. It sounds like the two in question were consistant with their game calling.
