End of the Season Challenges

Post by RoseauHockeyFan »

By the looks of the voting, it appears that the general consensus is that Roseau's last three games will be their biggest challenges. I personally agree with the poll results that Grand Rapids is the toughest opponent left on the Ram's schedule. They've played some really good teams in tight contests including a close 3-2 loss to Edina.

I wouldn't put Moorhead lower because of how things went in TRF. Moorhead seemed to have greatly outplayed them but ran into a very hot goalie. I also agree with you cesar_maniago that it's hard to beat the same team three times in a year, and I got the feeling that Moorhead is hungry to avenge last year's loss in the section final. They are currently fourth in the poll, but I think that's a result of the 7-2 win the Ram's had over them earlier this season.

Obviously it is very difficult to go undefeated for an entire season in the game of high school hockey. There are so many factors that can lead to a win or a loss. Here's little history for you all. The last high school hockey team to go undefeated was Hermantown (28-0-2) in 2007 from Section 7A but they had the two ties. The last team from a AA school which is Roseau's division to go undefeated was Bloom. Jefferson (27-0) in 1993. That means it's been 15 years since it was last accomplished!

Here's a list of undefeated teams since 1957 and the year they did it. I got this from the minnhock.com site by the way.
1. Bloom. Jefferson (27-0) 1993
2. Hill-Murray (27-0) 1983
3. Edina East (23-0) 1974
4. Mpls. Southwest (19-0-2) 1970
5. International Falls (22-0) 1965 & 1966
6. St Paul Johnson (20-0) 1963
7. Roseau (27-0) 1959

Only 7 teams have gone undefeated for the entire season in the last 50 years of MN high school hockey. Maybe history is due another undefeated team. Are the Ram's that team? Only time will tell, but no matter what happens - I will stay a loyal fan of the green and white!

wishock wrote:I'm not sure where to post this. It would fit in most threads. In Wisconsin we are not allowed to give private monetary help to public school programs. God forbid if any student would have an unfair advantage. If this is not the case in Minnesota we should get a slush fund started to help some of these schools travel. I have heard that Roseau's travel budget is about 5% of Moorhead's. This may be just rumor. But Roseau does a tremendous amount of traveling just to play the team's they have always played in their neck of the woods. I'll put up the first grand and for those who are complaining about Roseau's schedule, ante up. We'll get this problem fixed. Also, how about a motor coach for the boys in March. That school bus has to be uncomfortable.
Thanks for you're interest in supporting youth hockey here in MN. Because Roseau does so well in hockey year after year, it's easy to forget that it's a small town (Pop. 2,700), with a small school enrollment. Obviously we have a limited budget compared to bigger schools. Roseau hockey players log many hours on a school bus. I remember those trips and I can tell you that school buses don't have much leg room. I don't have a specific recommendation about starting a fund for travel and other expenses, but you might fire an email to tostby@roseauramshockey.com. He oversees the Roseau Ram HS Hockey website and he has connections and might be able to give you some ideas. Thanks again, RHF

Get real -- give these other team more credit, Thief Rivers Falls or Grand Rapids, has a good chance and can pullout upsets, BLaine is an outdoor game where anything can happen. If Roseau is still undefeated at the end of the regular season, THE ONLY TEAMS THAT CAN BEAT THEM IS FROM SECTION 8AA or a team like Duluth, or Grand Rapids.

Nope, Roseau will beat Grand Rapids 5-1. The Thunderhawks will endure a 3 hour road trip, step on the ice and won't know what just hit em'. Seen the clubs with my own 2 eyes and it will not be close. Blame this one on the city of Grand Rapids and their horse##$$ rink operations. North Rink 9 - City of GR ZIP!

Sorry slapshooter, I was only looking at the AA and when there was a one class system to make a historical comparison of Roseau's chances of going undefeated. Warroad indeed had a great team in 2005.

Where are you coming from Northwoods?
That doesn't sound like you.
Roseau is good. That doesn't make everyone else bad.
Let's see how it all plays out.

12 steps north of the Memorial and 86 steps from the side door of the Legion! Built all by fundraising and volunteers that have a passion for Ram hockey.

Only a handful (smaller percentage of 7,900 folks) of hard working folks (parents, coaches, vounteers) support the hockey in GR. Up in Roseau the entire city supports the program. There in lies the difference. You have a lot of city members who could care less about hockey in fact try to ignore it. Roseau is proud of the program as any northern city should be. They got it figured out at the community level, a community 3 hours south of them does not. Roseau has the template for success why because the community cares about the game.

Anyone can beat them on any given night. Same as any other team. Let's not crown them the best ever. They're not even close to some of the great teams of the past. They may very well go unbeaten this season, but that obviously remains to be seen. Let's watch and see the season unfold before we crown them state champs.

IF the Rams go on to become state champs (undefeated, or not, it doesn't matter), this team (along with last years') will go down as one of the best ever. How could it not???

Just about any good team can get lucky and ride a hot goaltender but if I were a betting man, I'd say Edina, Minnetonka, Hill-Murray and maybe a handful of other teams could match the Roseau Rams.

Agreed. I would venture an opinion, and mind you, it's only an opinion, that this team is not a top ten all time in the history of Minnesota High School Hockey. They are a very good team, but not one of the best ever. Undefeated or not. The competition they're up against (i.e. schedule) doesn't lend weight to the greatest of all time. There's been Roseau teams that have lost games that would bury this year's version. While once again, they are a very good team, they are not great.

Wrong, when one team is just better, the number of meetings is immaterial.

The Rams have already proven they are a great team no matter what happens from here on out.
Based on who is the best every night- Roseau will probably win every game.
Based on the law of averages- sooner or later they will drop one.
Whether it happens this year or next remains to be seen.
It's going to be harder than last year, but they are more than capable.
I'm pullin for GR, but if they don't do it, I will be pullin for Roseau.

They certainly do: hide up there, don't play anybody, then slip into town and make a three-day run in March.
