Sounds like I missed a great game. I chose to attend the BSM TG game based on logistics. Everyone in the area told me AHA would get plasted, but I had faith. I had AHA over HM 3-2.

AHA played real good in the first period and did control center ice and made the most of their shots. I thought they had more.

Hill Murray is still a tough team to beat, I would not want to face them in the playoffs.

Wow, I should have went to this game. Any previous year and I totally would have. It seemed to me and possibly many others that Hill-Murray would walk on them. Holy Angels stepped up though. Sounds like they are getting ready to maybe make a run at something. Regardless, Hill is a great team and will be in the mix come playoffs/state. Hats off to both teams on a great game played. Shame on me for doubting the potential of this game.

What you missed was one of the best players in the state - Danny Mattson, just putting on a show! He was by far the best player on the ice. H.M. was not able to come close to containing this guy. Mattson had multiple scoring opportunities, set up some teammates for great chances that were missed, and drew a penalty at a crucial time in the last period. H.M. was a bit jinxed, as I felt that they did not capitalize on many possible goal opportunities, and they outshot the Stars. Mattson was the difference in this game.

It sounds like Hill dominated this game, but gave AHA some opportunities that they capitalized on. I mean look at the shots on goal for crying outloud, 27-12 in favor of Hill. No team should win a game 5-4 with only 12 shots on goal. My hats off to Holy Angels for being able to take advantage of the opportunities they had.

I was at the game tonight and the only person to blame for this loss is Lechner. Does he not know what it means to match up lines. Hill scores in the third to tie the game and he comes out with his fourth line. I don't think he gets the concept of momentum!

Disappointing loss. This team is ripe to get picked off by someone in sections. H-M better start soul searching and they best not lose again this year.

My fellow "Pioneerprideguy" Sparlimb. As a longtime follower of HM, I'm surprised at your concerns about our club. I realize they have some issues right now & defensively they are struggling, but this is normal this time of year. Traditionally, this team seems to come out of gates at the start of the year flying. Kids are thrilled to make varsity and want to prove to people that they are worthy of being on the team. They then play some nonconference games which usually includes their buddies from WBand the kids are excited to play in big games. Then, they move into conference play, start blowing out some teams & the season "grind" comes into play. At about the 1/2 mark of the year, kids kinda get sick of the same drills, the immediate schedule doesn't look so appealing, and school finals are looming. The dog days of the season arrive.

As the calendar turns February, sections come into view. The seniors start realizing their high school (and perhaps overall) playing days are comming to an end. Complancency is replaced by urgency. The mind/body is rejuvenated. The legs moves faster...the passes are sharper...the minds become engaged. They end up playing their best hockey & low & behold, they find themselves downtown St. Paul.

So as you can see, this Pioneer team is right on schedule. All the ingrediants are there for another state tournament appearnce. We all just need to relax, regroup, and get prepared for the run at the end.

Just a side note, keep Lech in your thoughts/prayers as his mom, who has had health issues for a while, was given her last rights about a week ago. Some heavy hearts to along with along with hockey on the mind.

Keep working hard boys...the Pioneer faithful (including Sparlimb) believe in ya.

As a Hill supporter, I'm disappointed in the result, but this is what I love about the sport of hockey. #2 can lose to #25. The UW Badgers (#17) spanked the #2 Denver Pioneers 7-2 last Saturday night. In what other sport does this kind of thing happen regularly? In HS hockey, you can never count on anything. In my opinion, HA has been the state's best team the past two years and failed to make a state tourney appearance. Maybe this will be their year to be the upstart.

And yes, Mattson is a beast. With Whetmore back (is he coming back?) the Stars will be a tough out.

I was there and surprised and dissapointed with the crowd.

A lot of peple missed a very entertaining game no matter who you wanted to win.

In addition to the fans, the other thing that was missing was the body check.

Must agree PPG, this is the time of the year to get losses out of the way. Once the conference games start to wind down, the Pioneers will begin to get even hungrier for the section title and hopefully a successful run in the state tournament. It's always good to have reality checks in the middle of the season so that a team realizes its weaknesses that need to be improved. As for now, I'm looking forward to conference results and the final game against Moorhead. As always, it should be a good test before section time.

Best of luck to the Pioneers. No matter the few losses, the team is still stacked with offense and experience all around. When the "A" game is on, anyone can be beat.

My hat goes off to AHA for the quality win. However, as a student at Hill I know myself and a lot of my friends wanted to go but put studying for the finals ahead of the game. I know some of the hockey players were upset about the timing of the game as well. This game would have been perfect for this Thursday night. After the students were done with finals the game would have been one of the best attended of the year. This is a setback for Hill, but Hill should bounce back, the next game against Tartan will be a good indicator of where the team is at. No other team is going to get 5 goals on 12 shots. Flip has some off nights, but he has the skills of a top goal tender.

Webb picked it up last night, and had a little more help from the D. Mattson once again proved that he is among the top players in the state.

This proves that anything can happen in high school hockey. Don't count the Stars out yet this season...

Webb was very good last night. He didn't give up a lot of rebounds and is very good at redirecting the puck either into the corners or out of the rink.

Yes the shots were that few, or counted. I thought AHA had more in the first but I was wrong. Wetmore is done for the year, it is too bad. The way they are playing is great and his speed and skills would be great. But things like this happen and that is when the team needs to pick it up. Last year they had the same issues with three key players hurt (Raskob, Matson and Wetmore ), but they played BSM great and won. It is just too bad he is a senior.

Don't assume a win against Tartan and I won't assume that your fans won't show (unless of course they are bribed).

I apologize if reading my post may have taken you an hour or two (oh, and please don't move your lips when reading).

I get a kick out of Tartan people. You have this big win against Hill, but yet you still look up to them in the standings. You want to impress us loyal HM fans, beat us in sections. I know we will be seeded #1 (again) and I'm really hoping Tartan is 4/5. Trust me when I say this, we Hill fans will be pulling for you in the quarterfinals. We want to see your faces as you walk out of the Coliseum to the chant of Season's Over in the semi's. I'm sure it won't a big surpise because you guys are used to hearing it...but we will enjoy it a little bit more this year.

As for the AHA game, wouldn't really refer to is as a setback. Losing by a goal to a decent club in a nonconference/nonsection team, really isn't setback. Getting drilled by STA or losing to a SSP team would be considered a setback.

So continue to pack your stands with your large school support, as our little parochial kids balance out athletics & academics.
