Updated after two periods:

Pioneers 2, Cadets 1

Furne, Zepeda the goals for H-M

From what I've heard, the "homer refs" are back on the ice tonight. What a surprise at St. Thomas arena..

Should be a very good game, but I think it won't be two high scoring.

Hill 4
STA 2

Scoreboard hit it, final score is Pioneers 4, Cadets 2.

H-M goals: Zepeda, Furne, Cecka, Widing

Big big road win for the Pioneers as they are now neck-in-neck for the conference lead with STA!

Between the few and far between minutes I did see, it appears the Phillippi played an outstanding game. St. Thomas outshot Hill (at least they were last I saw) and I know some of the shots were really close in. Hill did get a number of odd man rushes. But the video feed was so bad you couldn't ever get a good feel for the game and how it was played. For those of you who were there, did it seem very even? Did Hill just bury their chances and St. Thomas didn't? Glad to see Flip play real well against a top team not named White Bear Lake...

Sparlimb, I was at the game and St Thomas outshot hill I believe 36 24
But the Pioneers had better scoring chances and more of them. The pioneers wore em down The Cadets put up a fight the first 5 min of the 3rd but the go ahead goal was all she wrote.

Review of Game...

Post by topshelf10 »

It was a close game after a scoreless first period. STA scored first on the powerplay. H-M answered back when Rob Vannelli missed the puck at the point giving Zepada a breakaway. Furne got a goal. Then Saintey from STA sniped Phillipi with a slapshot. Then Rob Vannelli tripped skating backwards on a 1-on-1 giving H-M the win. It was a great game though just some daunting errors made by STA's defense.

Wasn't at the game but heard Furne and Cecka both unloaded canons on their goals, that true?

HM 4, STA 2

Post by stpaul »

I was at the game. It was a very good hockey game. These are two talented and speedy teams. The number of scoring chances and the play were pretty even. Phillippi in goal for HM was very good and was probably the difference. HM's first line was great tonight with each of the 3 - Zepeda, Furne & Cecka - scoring a goal. Sainty & Rooney are dangerous players for STA. HM's D & backcheckers did the job when they were out there. STA only scored on the power play and on a bad turnover. Nice little scrum late in the 2nd that resulted in 4 penalties on HM and 3 on STA. They evened that one up 20 seconds later.

Yes- Furne's goals was a real bullet. He was set up nicely by Zepeda. Cecka deked the D-man at the blue line, went in alone to the faceoff circle & fired it over Altrichter's shoulder.

i was there and it was a good game. sta's defense basically gave HM two goals when vanelli missed the puck and zepeda flew by him. HM third goal was a little soft when sta's d-man tripped. the scrum was cool with punches thrown and helmets getting ripped off. i'm surprised nobody was kicked out. the penalties would have been even after fight but HM d-man tripped a sta player as he was skating back to the bench. ryan walters did not impress me at all. he looked like he was just coasting around the ice. i would say they are two evenly matched teams, with the team that makes the fewest mistakes being the winner, this time it was HM.

Was not at the game and read the acocunts here and in the paper.

On Cecka's goal, was it a deke that left the d-man stumbling or did the d-man fall on his own accord?

Interesting to read people's takes on the same thing.

It was a deke that broke his ankles and he fell.

HM - STA

Here's Furne's rocket. This one was shot so hard Altrichter had no idea where it was. He was reaching for it about 2 feet from where it ended up.

I was at the game too and it was a good one. STA outplayed Hill in the first period but Phillippi kept the Cadets out and Hill slowly took over. Furne's one timer off the pass from Zepeda was a rocket, hitting the twine and bouncing out halfway to the blue line. Altrichter, STA's goalie, made some nice saves too, I didn't think any of the goals were soft.

STA has a good, fast team and should be a heavy favorite to win the A title. Heck, they'd have a good shot at the AA title.

Ryan Walters looked like he was out of gas at the end of the game. He's a big kid and he's only a sophomore so he's got some growing to do. He didn't have a standout game last night but assuming he doesn't leave early, Hill and the rest of the state have two more years of trying to stop him which will not be easy as he gets bigger.

It was my first time out to the STA arena and it's a nice one, good to see the private school funds being put to good use. They have netting around the whole arena except the player benches which I don't think I've seen before.
It's hard to win when you always lose.
