St Thomas (9-1) v. Benilde (9-1) 12-28-07

Post by HShockeywatcher »

Not really sure who's favored in this.
Two common opponents:
CDH
STA 2 wins 4-2, 6-2
Benilde win 3-2

Breck
STA loss 5-6
Benilde win 6-0

Benilde beat a good Marshall team and a better Edina team. St Thomas handled Blaine. The Cadets have more experience on the ice at the X, but may be the underdog.

i think that bsm will beat st. thomas 4-2 despite having similar records sta hasn't played as good as teams as bsm.
besides look who sta lost to BRECK, who BSM jsut happened to slaughter. 4-2 will be the score sta will sneak a couple by the BSM goalie

Benilde is a solid squad defensively which is the bane of STA. I think Benilde will shut down the high scoring Cadets and be able to sneak out with a nice 3-2 win.

I only saw Benilde play early in the season when they were on tv, so not much to go off there. That being said, this group of Cadets is most impressed I've been with them in the last 5 years. They may be the underdog, although not by much, but I'd be surprised if there was a team in state they couldn't skate with.

Saw Benilde play against Edina and then against Breck last night, and would say they have the advantage over STA. They can match the speed of STA, but are bigger and more physical. Their defense was amazing to watch....best all around team I've seen in quite a while.

BSM over STA 5-2

STA lost to Breck 6-5, and out shot them 3-1. i think the shots were 49-18 or something.

STA wins this one, but hopefully not

Should be a VERY close game. Giving the edge to the Red-Knights, especially with them knocking off Edina.

Pauly looks to repeat at the X, following last year's Tonka Bronze 3-game romp to the title.

If BSM does win, look for them to jump into the Gold bracket next year.

For those of you who last summer questioned, "Why does Tonka get to play in the Gold Division, and not _____" (fill in the blank). I guess the organizers got it right!

The winner of this game should definitely get to move up; East going 0-3 both last year and this year (pretty sure). Maybe even the loser depending on how close of a game, the results of Gold and the rest of the season.

two hot teams with great coaching and a solid core of TEAM PLAYING. This should be a great game to watch and I will pick BSM 4-3. The Red Knights are off THE WIN OF THE SEASON and are on a high that STA cannot bring them down from. STA is an awesome and dangerous team who should be able to skate with BSM, but its Knight Night.

The Red Knights have one tough game the rest of the season, let's see how it goes.

I went up to the Hill-Tonka game with a friend and was able to catch this game as well. STA had one odd man rush after another. I was very impressed with the speed of STA and also the defense. #6-3-and 5 from STA knocked BSM all over the ice. On the other side i saw a very undisiplined BSM defense. The coach should just move them all up to forword. Student ran all over the ice and was very seldom in position to make plays. BSM D is overrated. If not for the BSM goalie this one could have gotten away real early. Even though shots were close at the end STA could have blown this team away..

Why STA doesn't opt up to AA is the question I have. They can and should be competing against the big schools.

For the first period and a half Benilde dominated on the ice, they were definitely the better team on the ice, with no respect to scoring. The whole game STA dominated in the shot/scoring area. By the end of the 2nd period half of Benilde's shots came on power plays. 5 on 5 Benilde couldn't do much with the net. They are a big squad and pretty fast, just not much offense to them.

The final was 6-4, with many of the goals not that great. The last goal probably shouldn't have counted; what looked like a missed interference call on the replay when STA scored their last goal sealed it up. Not the best way to win.

Hockeyguy_27, there probably aren't many people out there who don't agree with you, but discussing it on here goes no where.

The rest of the way

Post by BSM99 »

Benilde has only two real tough tests the rest of the way - Minnetonka and Shattuck (Osseo and Totino Grace will be ok too). But that soft conference schedule won't help them.

Red Knights are very good but so is STA. Time for them to move up to AA where they belong.

I don't know much about Shattuck, but i can't imagine BSM with that defense staying within 5 of Shattuck. If the likes of Sid Crosby, Kyle Okposo, Jonothan Toews played there, i would think they must have a few forwords that will have a hayday dancing around 2on1 3on1 all night long.

Were you watching the right game? STA walked over Benilde for the first ~12 min of the game. Once BSM got into their game, the game evened out a lot. However, STA had great team speed and skill that not many teams can keep up with. I also noticed that STA was pretty cheap and it looked like they were talking trash for most of the game. Also, what's up with the goalie coming out to the neutral zone when they score?? That wasn't what I expected coming from the military academy...

I too thought the Benilde goalie played very well, and they have alot of talented kids, but what's up with that D? For a while i thought i was at the Pond Hockey championships. The Benilde defenseman don't stay in position long enough to stop anyone. Looks like they all want to read their name in the box score in the morning, and that's why they won't win a championship. They have my vote for the Lady Byng Trophy if there is such a thing in high school hockey.

BSM's D

Post by BSM99 »

Boy, you guys see one game and you are ready to make some pretty bold predictions!

If you had seen those same "D" play against Edina you wouldn't be making predictions about a non championship season. They were sloppy and bad against STA but the Cadets put the clamps on the BSM forwards early - that's why the defense were up in the play so much - way too much as was evidenced by the odd man rushes!
