Zach Budish --- hack????

Post by saintpaulhockey »

He two handed a wayzata player in the head after a whistle and was ejected in a close game with about 5 minutes left, is this typical behavior?

If that indeed happened, I am surprised the player wasn't knocked out cold.

Hopefully, the player that allegedly got hit is alright.

As for Budish, he isn't known as a dirty player.

He is usually very composed and is definitely not a dirty player, so I don't know where this came from. I when you play over 50 and maybe closer to 100 games a year, your temper will flare up once.

does he miss the next game, too? or because it was a tournament can he come back?

Anyone at the game that saw it? Was it some sort of retaliation? Having coached against Zach in pee wees/batams, find it hard to imagine that there was not an incident prior that led to this. Definitely not his nature to take a two hander at someone! The Gophs could use a little bit of this, too bad Lucia seems to have little interest in him!

Zach is a great kid. I have never seen him loose his temper and try to injure a player. If he wanted to he could injure someone every game without even getting a penalty.

You clearly don't know what you are talking about if you think this is the case. He has a scholarship offer from the Gophers. Not sure how you figure that equates to "little interest".

I heard the puck was on the top of the net, someone hit it in the air and he was only trying to bat it down.

Guess we will have to wait and see, but there is a difference in offering a scholarship and actually recruiting a kid. By recruiting I mean calling, visiting, staying in touch. Lucia does not seem to be doing that from what I hear-yes I will admit its heresay but it comes from former players/coaches in college hockey. I would love to see him in Maroon & Gold, but I hate to say it I believe we will see him in a Sioux sweater. Think about it, the Gophers play a wide open style compared to the Sioux and he obviously fits their mold as well being a beast that he is! I could go on but really don't care to but save that for a snowy day.

Getting back to the point, good kid with great character. Hopefully the previous poster was on to something saying that he was trying to bat the puck out of mid air to do what he does best=score!!!

Your "hearsay" is brutally inaccurate.

A coach can't "call" a player when he is a junior. It is against NCAA rules. They have been doing just as much as anybody else by attending games, letters, etc.

Lucia has been at atleast 2 of Edina's games and probably more but just hasn't been seen.

The incident happened well after the whistle. No excuses, people. The whole arena saw and heard it. No one complained of the call, including Giles. (Shockingly, I don't even think Rob Leer complained)

I too was at the game, he definately was NOT trying to knock the puck off the top of the net. It appeared to me to be an act of frustration. Edina was not playing up to their normal standard and were in a close game with a team they should easily beat by several goals. I don't know Budish so I'm not going to jump to any pre-mature conclusions about him. Luckily the Wayzata player wasn't hurt. Because Budish was given a match penalty, he should sit the next game. I'd like to know if some governing body reviews those types of penalties and if a longer suspension could be imposed?

It was not listed as a Match penalty. % for slashing and 10 for slashing if the game sheet is correct He will not sit the next game.

Budish is not a hack. But I'm sure this incident made Hakstol and the Sue up their recruiting efforts. :D

I was told the same thing by an Edina parent. I was also told he verbally comitted but have been told I'm nuts. What's up? People need to quit hacking on Lucia so much. The U is a storied program with great tradition, Minnesotans need to jump back on the bandwagon and start supporting this club a little more. All the negative talk may be part of the reason some of Minnesota's finest go elsewhere. While not in full agreement with some of Lucia's tactics, he's the coach, he's in charge, and being a true fan means you put up with some things you question. Hey, I'm still a Miami Dolphin's fan. How do you think I feel right about now? I'm not going to jump ship though.

As for Budish, I've seen him play a few times, and in no way, shape or form did he appear to be a "hack". He's a strong, physical kid. While not witnessing the incident, I'll bet it happened in the heat of the moment, which in fact, has happened to every player who's laced up the blades. Don't go labeling the kid as a goon. As a GR guy, it pains me a little to admit how good I think he is, but he's the most impressive high schooler I've seen play in quite a while. Good luck to him.

Not saying he may not end up elsewhere. But to say the effort hasn't been put in is very inaccurate.

As you have correctly noted, Budish has been recruited by the U (other schools too). Recently, his Dad was seen talking to Lucia after a game.

Calls can be made when a kid is a junior. I believe they can only call once a month. Coaches are very careful with that. Calls cannot be made to a sophomore.

For those that are interested, the rules can be found on the following website.

Makes for great bathroom reading

My bad on the phone calls. The rule used to be no contact like that at all until July 1st prior to your senior year but I see they changed the rule last spring. I guess it just goes to show you how it can be difficult to keep up with all the guidelines.
