First of all I am not from EP or Edina. I am just someone that enjoys watching hockey.

I was also at both of the games on Friday evening. First of all, there is no way I could play for Elk River with all that screaming from the bench. Elk River has 3 coaches screaming jibberish at the top of their lungs.

Regarding the Edina/Eden Prairie game: The students had poor sportsmanship during the National Anthem. To make noise during that song is very classless, it's different if they are singing along with it. To the Edian students they treated the greatest song of our country as a joke.

Next, #10 from Edina shoud of spent most of the game in the penalty box. He took numerous deliberate runs at Leddy from EP. I noticed a couple cheap shots, but the two that stick out were a slash with intent to injure down by the Edina students and a late charge to the net which took Leddy out by the knees. Both plays looked like intent to injure. I also thought #5 from Edina should of spent most of the game in the box.

After one of the goals everyone skates down their bench giving eachother high fives. After one of the Edina goals #5 or #10 (think it was #10) skated down and gave everyone from EP high fives, basically rubbing it in. Clearly that should be a penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct.

I personally thought the officiating was horrible both ways. The referees clearly lost control of the game. The minor altercation has the period ended sent 1 from each team to the box. This should of landed at least 2-3 from each time in the box. The refs should of known things would get out of control and they could of nipped it in the bud right then. Also, how is that while EP is on the Power Play and Giles is questioning where the face off is at, the refs drop the puck and for 4 seconds the clock begins until the ref blows the play dead to tell Giles why the faceoff is there. No reason for the ref to stop play to talk to Giles for one secon, once that puck was dropped he should of waited for the next whistle. Giles has the refs wrapped around their fingers.

Edina used to always be a finess kind of hockey team. Ever since Giles has coached them this has changed. thye seem physical and somtimes dirty. Does he know this isn't the NHL?

Uneducated? Edina public schools are the best in the state i am pretty sure that Edina students are the most educated in the state. This was just big rivalry game. Eden Prairie beat Edina really bad in the section final in football this year and Edina wanted to get back at them and they did. Have you been to any other Edina game and you will see that the student section is just like any other student section or what any other student section should be like. EP and Edina are big rivals and this was huge for Edina to win this game.

The refs let players play and this is one of the biggest rivalaries in the state you can expect there to be stuff like this.

Rivalry games are great. They are fun, high energy games that make it great for the crowd as well as the players.
You can have this without being disrespectful and classless.

"let the players play" is one of the biggest jokes in hockey. You call the game by the rules...............plain and simple. No different than any other sport.

With few exceptions, high school hockey is inadaquately officiated.

GR3343 wrote:As stated before, I am proud to be from a smaller community where values, sportsmanship, dignity and respect, are taught from generation to generation. Good natured cheering, taunting(within reason)and making noise, are all part of the atmosphere. I'm all for having fun, being rowdy and going nuts for your team. Edina took things a few steps further(parents & fans). The disrespect during the Anthem should be enough for the Old School community to question. The National Anthem is a symbol of time and respect for ALL. In the three games I personally witnessed Edina play, players and fans were moving around, speaking, yelling and in general disrespectful. Take note of the GR players standing at attention as most of their fans were, until the Anthem is complete. And by the way, the last time I checked, it's still the Home of the Brave, not the hornets. That was as galling a display as I've ever witnessed, and I had the misfortune of hearing that three times.

While all Edina fans may not fit the rude bill that I observed, there were many, many that did. The powers that be in Edina sports should know better and have more respect.

I only started this thread to voice my opinion about what took place in a hockey venue. That's what the "bored" is all about. If it strikes a nerve with the Edina fans, so be it. Rather than striking back with harsh comments, look deeper and see the truth.
Edina might have took the national anthem a little to far but thats only disrespectful thing they might have done the chants were not disrespectful. That's what you expect when Edina and EP play each other.

Most of the ex-NHLers coach this way. The Giles teams are thugish compared to the puck-movement based Ikola teams.

Sticksuphigh, I think you are missing GR3343’s point, and it is unfair to play the “Christmas spirit” card to devalue his very well thought out remarks. I wasn’t in attendance, so until someone brings forth evidence that what took place wasn’t “100% factual”, I’m giving GR3343 the benefit of the doubt. That said, I will also acknowledge that much of the blanket “hate” (like “Reggie” for example) is little more than child-like jealousy, and should be taken with a grain of salt. Edina fans definitely do not have the market cornered on boorish behavior, but winning programs have to know they will always be subjected to excessive taunting by jealous rivals. Just my opinion, but I think a conscious and community-wide effort to not “take the bait” would go a long way to remedy what sure seems like a state-wide lack of respect for Edina hockey.

Edina has a very accomplished HS hockey history, but my greater personal respect for programs like Roseau and Grand Rapids is for the undeniable humility that is woven into their success. Isn’t the ultimate goal to earn the respect of your peers and competitors not just in hockey, but all aspects of life? My hockey parenting days are over, but my pet peeve was always disrespectful behavior. I routinely brought it up at meetings, and countless times I privately expressed my disapproval to players, fellow parents, and coaches whenever I felt it was warranted. I can assure you I’d have vociferously lobbied against anything like the "newspaper" stunt had anything like that occurred while I was involved. That kind of behavior should rightly be branded as embarrassing and unflattering by the entire community until it eventually dies out. Besides, what's to be gained by putting a target on your back by needlessly inciting your rivals?

No sane observer will deny it’s the “few bad apples” who spoil the whole bunch in this case. But my suggestion would be to acknowledge that there might be an issue here, and communicate to your fellow Edinans the value and importance of humility rather than getting defensive over what appears to be pretty legitimate criticism.

Tigers33, from what I hear #10 (Leer???) from Edina has gone from a good Elite League player to a mindless hitting machine. I believe his stats will attest to that. #10 should reconsider his game somewhat.

As for Leddy, #10 couldn't catch him legally.

Hopefully, refs read these pages and will watch for that kid.

Also, keep in mind Giles is coaching that style of play. It's old NHL style, because the refs are allowing it to take place.

Thanks

I thought the Gaarder boys were skilled guys. Budish and Everson's limelight taking Connor off his game? Bit of frustration?

If he hit the player from behind.........that's a punk, gutless move, end of story.

Leer needs to put the puck away. He is a good player. He needs to find that mix of physical play and offense. He's a solid power forward type.

Who ever said Connor Gaarder played dirty that game, clearly did not watch the game. Matt Leer also kept very calm and ran his mouth too much, but did not play dirty. He only protected his teammates. He never started a fight or tried to cause a problem.

Connor deserved only penalty he did not deserve, that was when he threw a punch after getting slashed in the back of the head/neck. Also, if you closely watched Eden Prairie players took way to many runs at him, there were at least four instances when he got slashed in the back of the leg after the whistle. He did not hit Leddy from behind ever. I think he is second on Edina in points, so I don't think he feels Budish and Everson are stealing all the praise. Connor may have ran his mouth too much, but that is all.

As for the refs, they did a good job of controlling the game, there are only three though and when a game gets as chippy as that one and there are 4 seperate incidents about to break out it is hard to see all the extra -curriculurs. At one point, 4 Edina players were surround by the entire Eden Prairie team at the end of a period and they stopped that from ending up badly. The game got chippy because Eden Prairie took runs at Edina, when they were down by 3 or 4 goals, not because of Edina players and I think Zamman's point will attest to that.

The nnational anthem thing may have gone a little overboard, but I did not think it was to bad. the "psssh"es should not have happend, but almost every fan took their hats off. Yelling home of the Hornets is not an unacceptable thing. I have been at a Vikings game or two where the paid singer has changed brave to Vikings, so that is not something that has never been done.

Other than the National Anthem getting out a little out of control, I thought the rest of the stuff edina did including the newspaper thing was just Edina being funny and creative.

Also, don't you think that if you are sitting in the Edina section of an Edina game, most of the people will be cheering for Edina, so they will probably
will complain about the refs and cheer for Edina. Some parents may be foul mouthed and cause problems but for the most part they are good people.

I am sorry for the Edina womanbeing out of control and feeling overly entitled but, it seems that you GR were so angered by that one incident you are just trying to find other things to complain about and I don't think that shows very much class. If you want to read about some of the good things Edina fans have done, you could read the MNSUN article which was linked and try to make a more informed decision.

Last year at the state tournament, I saw a few Grand Rapids students behaving very inappropriatly towards a elementary or middle school aged kid who happened to wander into your section, but I didn't let those 5 knuckle heads ruin my view of Grand Rapids, so don't let some knuckleheads from Edina ruin your view of Edina.

Isn't it funny that a person, seemingly from EP sees a hit from behind and a fan, seemingly from Edina does not see it.

It's like Warroad/Roseau vision

How could this thread have grown to this number of replies without including some comments about those wonderful Greyhound fans?

In a battle between a Hornet fan and a Greyhound fan which has better sportsmanship?

Ya the puck-movement is really awful on the Budish-Everson-Gaarder line...NOT, even in the elite league they can control the puck like no other line i've seen down low behind the net, creating 70% of that teams points.

Giles coaching style does add a large amount of physicality to the game, and you may disagree with me but I would be willing to say that most coaches in the state want their team to hit and be physical, you win hockey games that way whether it is the NHL, the NCAA, High School hockey, or bantam hockey.

So some of you are saying #10 from Edina did not give a slash to Leddy down by the Edina student section forcing Leddy to skate off the ice in pain. Some of you are also saying #10 didn't come into the goalie late and take out Leddy at the knees again forcing him to get up slowly in pain.

If I was Eden Prairie, I would take runs at #10 also. You can't let someone take numerous cheap shots at your best players.

Also, who ever says EP was taking runs at Edina players obviously was not at the game. Half of the EP forwards are not even 5'10". Edina was by far the better team, but EP was buzzing around and could give them a fit the next time they meet.

The thing is the refs are not supposed to be allowing the NHL style of play. If the refs had control of that game they would have nipped things in the bud after the little skirmish at the end of a period. The refs could of easily taken 2-3 kids from each team and made things even on the ice. [/quote]

Do they play each other again? I looked at the Edina page on MSHSL and did not see EP but i could be wrong. Thats tobad and you have to agree the rivary is a little bit down now sense there not in each others sections anymore. But if they both met each other in state (not saying thats going to happen) that would be exciting.

First of all, I would like to say that Edina has a great team and a great hockey tradition. Their history speaks for itself.
I believe their image problem dates back to the late 60's.
Warroad blasted through the tourny on the back of Henry Bouche and were poised to complete a great year with a championship when Henry and an Edina guy hit the boards hard. Henry was done for the night, Edina ended up winning, and the hate for Edina was born. I was only 7, but I believe most of the state was pulling for Warroad that night.
I know it was almost 40 years ago, but even my mom is still sore about it.
Hang in there. Another 2 or 3 lifetimes and all will be forgot. :)

The only time they play each other again would be State Tournament and both teams have their work cut out for them to get that far.

archway Sign wrote:This happened to everyone from rapids who was sitting on the Home side...which was the Rapids side and the Edina side. I can understand why they were jockeying for seats, Edina and EP would have been a great game to stay for, but I had to tell more than one person they could have my seat when the game was over. I even held some ladies blanket. This is a scheduling mistake which creates this minor clash.

As far as student sections...Edina, EP and Elk River student sections would not make it 5 minutes in the IRA civic center. Our school officials and community would never allow such rude behavior...this is college behavior and these kids behave this way because the adults in the community allow them. Maybe some day these teams will come to Rapids and our community can show you how classy programs treat each other. It actually makes the game more fun to watch and play.

That being said it was a great tourney...and the Elks may end up in Rapids this year as a low seed in the section. If you do, keep your student section with the trashy mouths at home. The only person who will be allowed to yell the entire game will be your coach.
You hit it right on the head! It all starts with the parents, coaches, and school officials. There's no reason any of this behavior should be tolerated. It just irritates me when I see the opposing team not facing their opponent during player introductions. A total sign of disrespect. You typically see this with the metro teams. As far as the student sections go, they pretty much just try to outdo each other with stupidity.
