As usual the topic turns to the bad vs the ugly. Actually youth hockey associations, swimming clubs, baseball teams and Marching bands are usually separate entities of the public school system. I know this because I am a member of the RHS Band Boosters Executive board. When I tried to get the High School to purchase items we need, the AD told me that because we are a separate part of the system we need to purchase the items ourselves. The RHA (Richfield Hockey Association) uses the "coaches" from the high school as a way to show support, both boys and girls. That is the extent of the High School affiliation. There is a separate board of directors and fund-raising for the Hockey Association, as there is for the High School.
Both the High School and the Association have equal chance to go before the city boards for grants in their own group, again the Band Boosters have done that.
Sports have become top priority with many families. There is a reason so many private schools are putting very good teams on the ice, court, or field. It used to be a couple and now it's many. It has VERY little to do with education! We have become a society that values entertainment more than just about anything else.

Is it possible that you have it backwards?
Maybe the enrollment is up at the non public schools for other reasons. Maybe people want to go to non public schools because they dont like what is going on in the public schools.
We are a society that always has and still does value discipline, religion, spiritualism , and good education. Could that be the reason that some of these non public schools are so successful?

Both my children go to private schools. And it has nothing to do with sports. There are alot of private schools that struggle to field teams. Just becuase a few are stronger at one sport or another should not reflect on the true reason I pay for my children to attend. I truely believe all I am doing is the best I can do for their future.
A very small percentage of private schools do well at sports at any level.
Public schools are just as lopsided as privates when it comes to excelling at any given sport.

You're right in your statement that many people send their children to private schools because they feel it's the best place academically for their child. My point is simple and easily seen by people with their eyes WIDE OPEN!
Those of us that have been around for a few years realize that in the not to distant past Hill Murray was the only real power in hockey. Now there are MANY that are strong. Where were these teams not many years ago?

For some of us , sports is a nice side benefit, but we are where we are cuz we are just plain scared.

But for good conservative laughs while here at work, I read through the bored and pick out the spelling errors from the highly edjukated private schoolers.

We could make a list of public schools that were average at best or didn't even exist 15 years ago that now have great sports teams.
We could also make a list of private and Catholic schools that are not very competitive and never were.
