What teams should be better than the current records? Why?

Judging from the LPH pre-season poll, and where the teams stand now in their latest rankings, which is probably the best measure of teams not meeting expectations, the following teams have dropped the most in the rankings:

Class AA
Bemidji - has gone from No. 6 to No. 20
Wayzata - from No. 7 to No. 15 (tough schedule!)
North Metro - from a tie at No. 10 to unranked
Cloquet - from No. 12 to unranked (again, tough schedule!)
Burnsville - from No. 14 to unranked
BSM - dropped 5 places, from No. 4 to No. 9

Class A
Not as much movement, but:

Richfield and Farmington have gone from Nos. 12 and 13 respectively to unranked (I seem to recall however that Farmington is now AA).
Hibbing has dropped 5 places from No. 4 to No. 9.

All of this will change as more games are played.

Consistent is that Blake is a clear No. 1 in A and Stillwater and Eden Prairie are Nos. 1 and 2 in AA (take your pick).

Whoops, I could have sworn this thread was a Crookston site. I'll check back later.

Farmington is AA but Richfield is still at 12 along with a group of others. I assume this is based a little on the QRF and although not strong the AA schools they play.

This thread may end up belonging to Bemidji. The A teams up in section 8 have been giving them some lessons on winning. Any thoughts of Bemidji in Warroad tomorrow?

Piper will save the day for the Warriors.

Bemidji will then OWN this thread.

Ya so what the Jacks are losing alot of close games to highly ranked opponents. I was very impressed with their play in Crookston and will be very surprised if they are not in the hunt at the end of the season. Good luck to the Jacks and I'm sure the bounces will be going your way very soon.

I think Bemidji is doing okay.
1 - They are playing a very difficult schedule. The 8A teams have played youth hockey as A teams for years, so they have learned to play well against good competition. And in playing Stillwater, Grand Rapids, Elk River etc... the Jacks are getting the competition they need to be tougher by play-offs.
2 - They graduated a top ranked goaltender. The replacement(s) are learning and doing a good job. But every game aainst this tough competition makes them better. By play-offs they should be ready to make the one or two or three big saves that the team needs to make W's out of the L's.

I know Menne and Huerd (Bemidji coaches) and the parents and players would like more victories, but as an unrelated fan, I am pleased withhow they are progressing.

Disappointment depends on what your prospective is. Improvement, readiness for play-offs, quality games is how I am looking at it. And from that seat, I think the Jacks are on the right timeline.

Welcome to the official site of the Bemidji Lumberjacks. After three losses to section 8A teams, it looks like they have their work cut out for them. I would suggest they look at moving into A from AA, but section 8A really doesn't need the additional competition at this time.

I sure can't see Bemidji as a disappointment. They have had very close games against quality teams, it doesn't matter if they are class A or AA. Teams don't get better playing teams they can beat by 10 goals and Bemidji's schedule looks very tough. It all comes down to how your team is playing at playoff time, every game before than is a building block.

Richfield is clearly over-rated- living off of last year's records and talent. Mahtomedia is rated lower then Richfield but is a significantly more talented team. After seeing this play out- who can trust ratings at all- seems like a waste of ffort.

The defense of Bemidji in this one is noble but thats all. They have not proved that they can get it done in the last 4 years.

anderc14 - based on last night's result I'd have to say you are correct...but I think Richfield is about where they thought they would be with four new defense and a bunch of 8th and 9th graders. They've lost a lot of close games (a few blowouts) but with usually losing the SOG count in evey game doing pretty well.

So what you're really saying is "my post belongs in the Polls thread" and that the Zeph's deserve more credit!

From what I remember with Laura May on the team, Richfield beat Mahtomedi only a handfull of times in the last 5 or 6 years. Last year they split. Some teams - no matter how much talent have a psychological block against certain teams. I think this is one of those cases - not to take anything from a nice, quick well coached team!

The regular season is over for many teams and as you look at which teams did not meet early season expectations I would have to put Forest Lake close to the top of the list. They got off to a great start going 7-0 in November. But then things went into reverse for some reason and they've gone 3-13-1 the past two months. Granted many of these losses were to tough teams but I just thought they would win more games this year, especially after how they started out.

Cretin Derham Hall probably has not had the success that many thought me included. They have a great talented senior core Wild, Carlson (going to the Ohio State), Keyes (Bemidji or to be determined), + Chlebeck (TBD), Welch (TBD), Jondahl (TBD) but have a record under a year ago. They are a great group and hope they have a strong finish. Maybe the 5-0 dominating win over Forest Lake last night was a break out performance at the right time.

They lose a ton with the senior class and will have to go through a major reload - how is there JV do they have a talented group that can step in?

I've got to go with the Albert Lea. I've watched the team play all season and they just might be regressing. IMO, coaching has been a major issue with this team as they were expected to contend to the Big 9 title and were considered by most to be the favorite to get the #1 seed in 1A. They somehow managed to get the 2 seed, but had too many bad losses to be anything other than a middle of the pack team in Conference play. SO FAR, it's been a fairly disappointing season, but hopefully they can pull it together and finish strong and earn a trip to the State Tourney. I have my fingers crossed :)

This should have been the year this team made a good run--and it's not over yet. It is very odd though that this team has been getting totally outclassed with all the DI talent on it. Talk around the arena says Jondahl will be going to BSU.
That being said, they lose a lot and it looks like not much to replace this talent right away. CDH doesn't really use their JV as a development team--they'll have a few very good freshman next year who are currently playing U14.

International Falls they just disappoint me every season, the falls just cant seem to put a good team together, although they have excellent coaching. its like the girls have no heart for the game.

I think that it is better for teams to struggle in the beginning of the season rather than the end. When teams start winning towards the end of the season they have momentum going into the playoffs, but still aren't over confident, no matter the opponent. Some teams are just now beginning to struggle and it will be tough for them to over come this going into sections.

This site now belongs to EAST GRAND FORKS. according to sources, they played some close games with good teams this year, but couldn't get by Thief River Falls in the qtrs. Looking at scores-they continued to go backwards after the christmas break. This will give warroad the favorite for the section championship. Too bad Roseau or Crookston will be watching from the stands as well on Thursday!!
