Not any teams that are going to make a lot of noise at state form this section but it is a pretty even section up and down. Alex, Fergus, Apollo, Small Falls, Detroit Lakes, all have decent shots at coming out of this section.

Haha, well if Festler was still there I think they'd have a shot at something, but that isn't the case.

If Festler was there there would be no need to have this conversation. They would walk through the section. I'm interested to see how Hanowski does without his line mate. They're probably the preseason front runner but that could easily change once the season gets going.

St. Cloud Apollo...the worst team from St. Cloud...also the only team from St. Cloud that sees the state tourney.

Good to see George showing some love to a St. Cloud school that isn't named Cathedral.

Who else does Little Falls have besides Hanowski? What about the rest from last year? I though they were young.
Does ALexandria have a shot? They have a goalie that got drafted by Fargo of the USHL, Hemmingway.

Little Falls returns their goalie, Sperl, who was very shaky last year. They also return a solid defenseman in Berglund. As far as the offense goes, both of the Hanowski brothers will be returning, it will be interesting to see how they do without Festler.

I'm sure they have some more kids who are going to step up this year. Those are just the ones I know/remember off the top of my head from last years team.

Ben Nelson and Chris Sylvester are two more forwards that should really help the cause up front.

Goldy, How are the apollo boys gonna fair in this section? I know George is always a hater. Sorry George. What do you know about the new coach? Also what happened to the old coach? I hear he isn't doing the junior thing anymore. Didn't he kind of help getting things going there? Is there a chance he'll end up in the area coaching again? I heard he was a pretty coach with some pretty good connections.

Apollo should fare very well in this section. Their first line of Theis, Hockemeyer, and Christen will be very good, and you can expect them to put up a lot of points this year. They've got Nate Hampton in net who is a real treat to watch play. Very quick and is always in the correct position. He knows how to be a goalie. The question mark with the Eagles will be defense. Brent Butkowski will be very solid on D for the Eagles this year but after him there are some open positions. Brutger Mrozek will be moving back to D this year and I can see him stepping up and having a big year. Apollo will need some new guys like Ryan Gau, Andrew Kruchten and Cole Harlander to play well this year on D. Their new coach, Kris Dougherty, was the JV coach for the past two seasons. Before becoming the JV coach he coached at Fargo South. He is a very solid coach and definitely knows his stuff. Look for the Eagles to be a top 4 seed for sure and maybe even make a run at a section championship.

EDIT
In a weird twist Cole Harlander has chosen to snowboard this winter instead of play hockey. Josh Althaus is another young defensman from Apollo that should see a lot of playing time. (slipped my mind eariler)

Thats too bad about Cole Harlander, I think he would have been pretty strong this year for Apollo.

I'm sure that fergus will be competitive this year they always see to be close to the section finals. I believe they are returning most of their players from last year.

little falls 12th in class a?
st cloud apollo 19th?
both seem a little high considering each are returning only a few solid players, little falls maybe justified due to state berth last year but regardless.... neither are deep at all if i remember correctly

Apollo didn't lose much last year and faired alright against a AA schedule. They'll surprise some people this year if they're underestimated.

Goldy, I hate to do this to ya because you're my boy and all...but...

1) Apollo doesn't play a AA schedule, and didn't play a AA schedule last year. Only 11 of their 25 games were played against AA teams last year.

2) They only had three wins in those 11 games last year. Those three wins came against River Lakes (x2) and Monticello (who had a decent team last year).

Even thoughI rejected your claim, I think Apollo will have a good year and a nice chance of coming out of this section. They have little to no defense but they return a good core of forwards and a goalie that can definitely steal a game on any given night.

I'll take Apollo in this section.
