showcase

Post by SEhockeyDAD »

It'd be nice for Rochester, Owatonna, Winona, Dodge County, et al to have teams in the showcase fall league, but the logistics are against southern MN teams. Including travel time, a showcase hockey game is a 4 hours or more commitment. That increases the cost (gas,) the time conflicts with fall sports/homework/work, and the likelihood that one or more girls won't make each game. All this equals fewer girls who can sign up to play.

I suppose with a little forethought, a southern MN coop team or two could do it. Guess its something to keep in mind for the future.

iP and SEHockeyDad, I am assuming that you guys are Mayo parents (or players) and if not just ignore this question. I picked up my daughter from the fall camp this evening and spoke to the youth coach that is also working Mayo's capt practice. He said they only get 5-9 players! I thought that Mayo was a serious program. Word is that the girls that show up really are working hard but how much can you do with a skeleton crew? I always thought that capt practices had tons of players. Yes I understand that girls do fall sports but I think some of the ones that attend also do fall sports. How many girls will be trying out for Mayo this fall? I think JML and CHS will be around 20.

I assumed that he was going to be the new Mayo coach this year since he is tight with the AD... both played for Mayo and I think theyre from the same neighborhood. Can you imagine the rejection phone call? ... "Sorry dude you didn't get the job...by the way hows your mom?" Ouch.

Mayo

Post by SEhockeyDAD »

Rocket; there probably 16-17 girls who'll try out for Mayo. Thats one reason why captains practices are sparsely attended. Mostly, they're not a group of off-season dedicated rink rats. Its been that way for years, although some of that has been due to off-season hockey at higher level, such as AAA, elite camps, etc. A lot of girls won't do every local ice time when they're dedicating lots of time in the cities. And there's fall sports taking time, leaving less time for homework and social stuff, leaving almost no time for hockey.

That coach you talked to isn't the new Mayo coach, though he'd have been an excellant choice, too. Mayo's new coach is Jeff Phillips, Mayo's assistant coach the last couple years. Thats a big reason he got the job.

SEHockeyDad,

was at the rink on Sunday night because of the JM boys capt practice. I watched a little and saw that the Mayo girls were on the adjoining rink. Wow. They had about a dozen skaters and their confined space games were smokin'. They looked good. I just got back from my daughters fall hockey camp tonight and the pace is so slow by comparison. Yes I know that the girls are younger but there is a massive speed/intensity difference. The coaches really like to go with confined space games versus line drills. It seems like a big difference in just a few years. I remember when I played youth hockey and it was "stay in your lane". By the way, the numbers for girls youth is about 100 kids ages 9-14. Looks good for the future.

I have seen Phillips skate in senior league and he is a very gifted and creative playmaker. I suspect that Mayo's personality will change with him. I see that Pickle and Fletcher are scoring a lot in soccer so hopefully for Mayo there is a carry over to their hockey game. I heard that you guys have some in volleyball and cross country too. Nice - well rounded athletes. My daughter is currently involved in 5 sports but I suspect that by high school she will be lucky to compete in 2.

Yetzer will play for Lakeville North. Great kid! Along with many of her peers. Nice group of girl's moving up for North.

Hey all, How do the section 1 AA teams stack up against the A teams? Is there a correlation to how you do in U12 and U14 hockey?

Hey 1AA, time to wake up. Your first practices start in 2 weeks!

How are the captains practices going? Maidl says that they are getting around 15 kids at theirs. Mayo is still only getting 5-6 skaters. JM is somewhere in between.

Century opens their season against Babbitt-Embarass, then Mayo and then Dodge County. I thought they might set up an easier schedule.

JM opens against Farmington. Tough game?

It's hard to say how the JM Farmington game will be. Both teams lost some significant players, and JM was able to keep a two point game last year. Goalie Michelle Bonapace really kept JM in the game tho getting over 60 shots and only allowing 3. If she plays like she did last year, JM will be able to stay close in more games then you think.

I'm interested in how Mayo will do this year too. I think the section is pretty much up for grabs with Mayo, Farmington, and the Lakeville North having some good chances.

As far as how do the AA teams compare with the A teams, I'm assuming you're talking about the Big 9. With Austin in the Big 9, Austin has one of the better A teams in the state and compare just fine with the AA teams and are winning most of them being neck in neck with Mayo for the Big 9 crown each year. As far as like AL, I don't think they compare as much as Austin, yet they can't be taken lightly either. Same goes with Faribault.

1AA

Post by pickme »

The first Friday of the season, Farmington and Faribault are scrimmaging North and South (so the 1A vs 1AA can be broken down by the Faribo faithful). Mayo and Century are coming to Lakeville to play North and South after Thanksgiving. North and South will play Farmington at least once during the year (and both are in the Farmington Tournament)...and of course, each other twice during conference play and maybe again in the Farmington Tournament.

Farmington and Mayo have new coaches...will that matter?

Reminder that South beat North three times last year. Even though they lost a goalie to Eastview, the remaining goalie is just as good if not better (and has 4 years left).

Based on what they did last year, Farmington has to be the favorite (even though it was class A...they should have always been a AA team). Mayo is the defending champ so they deserve some respect. North and South just based on Lake Conference schedule and returning talent will compete. Owatonna lost a very good player but the coach should have them ready by the end of the year.

Does JM/Lourdes have a chance?

Bonapace-Potvin is a very good goalie. They lost Leyendecker and Austin to graduation but can the 9th graders pick up the slack (Armstrong, Armstrong, Breezawitz and Lemish). Ruzinski didn't go to Lourdes but is at Mayo instead so they lose her speed. Antolik is small but is a decent player. I don't really know their 10th-12th graders.

it depends what you mean by a chance. if you're talking a section/big 9 title, i think that's stretching it...if you're talking about staying in games, there's a chance....i think they may pull off some surprises...
as far as for their future, they're only going to get better...there's some excelent lourdes girls coming up and if lourdes stays with john marshall, they could be a very good team with the freshman this year getting plenty of experience...

How many future Lourdes girls? I won't use names but the intials of the few that I know include HN, NN, KB, SM and LB. I also heard that there is an email circulating that talks about Lourdes co-oping with Century next year but who knows if it is true.

The Rochester 14UA actually includes some future JM girls. The majority of the team will be headed to Mayo. There is a pretty good mix of girls between the 12U teams and the city league.

iPuck, I was talking to the 14UA coach on Monday and he told me that one of his goalies will be leaving when the HS season starts and go to Mayo. She wants to learn from Murphy this year and will have Moffett to coach her. The other U14 goalie lives in the Mayo area but goes to D-E so she will probably enroll at Mayo next year as a 9th grader. There was talk that the girl from I-Falls will move from the Century district to go to Mayo but I don't think that will happen in this housing market. If you look down into the girls program now - all 3 12U goalies will attend JM (woohoo for the Rockets). One of the 10UA goalies will attend JM and the other will most likely go to Lourdes. Mayo will have to turn a skater into a goalie in the near future. :? The city league teams will all have to develop goalies this year so we will see how many more JM goalies we will get  .

this is just my own opinion, but i think the u14 goalie could use the experience at the u14 level instead of moving up to mayo. rochester didn't have a u14 program so i'm assuming she's making the jump from u12 to high school which is a big jump and shouldn't be made if it can be avoided. i think she'd still be able to learn from murphy staying on u14 simply by going to games and watching her style. or even better, she could go to a jm, c, or mayo game b/c they all have such outstanding goaltenders, and the more outlook she gets, the more she's going to learn i think. besides i feel it's very important to get used to the shots from u14 before moving up to high school right away. it's a whole new game.

Hey guys and gals,

Just another weekend left of captains practices and then tryouts start on Monday. I'm pretty sure that the 3 Rochester team will have no cuts but the girls will be trying to earn their spot on the top 2 lines.

How 'bout the rest of the 1AA teams? Will they have JV teams? Will Rochester have a combo JV team this year?

Are their any surprises? Did somebody really improve over the summer? Did anyone gain or lose players due to transfers or parents moving?

I heard faribault 4 Century 1 but someone else said Faribault was not there...

JM? Did they play?

The rest of the Big 9?

I stopped in to watch a little of the Century v Mayo game tonight. Will Mayo have trouble transitioning to their next game against the huge suburban conglomerate team later this week? Mayo outshot Century about 60-1 and the score ended 7-0. Kudos to both coaches for playing everyone. The Mayo girls occasionally panicked for no good reason and made some really poor blind passes to nobody across the blue line and into the high slot. If they do that to JM I think I smell breakaways!

I know Century has some novice players and it would be difficult to be in Maidl's boots. I picked up a roster sheet to see two 7th graders. Both played a fair amount and I have to ask why they are not skating in 12U? Good golly, both of them could really use some power skating lessons! They have both played for a number of years but you sure can't tell by their skating skill. When I look at the size of Century's roster I have to wonder why they allowed the 7th graders to play. Mayo had a tiny squad by comparison. I didn't get to see too many goals since it was 5-0 when I got there. Who got them? Flesher? Pickel? Ruzinski?

Oh well, looking forward to December 4th - JM v Mayo.

Fieck 2 G 3 A
Shoebauer 1 G
Pickel 1 G

That was all they mentioned. Nice job girls.

Want to give alot of credit to Century goalie, Liz Maidl on her 86 saves tonight!! Loss to Lakeville South, I believe 5-0. Also, Mayo lost to Lakeville North 3-2, was that a conference game?

1AA so far

Post by Jethrotull »

1 - Lakeville North
2 - Rochester Mayo
3 - Farmington
4 - Lakeville South
5 - Dodge County
6 - Rochester JM
7 - Owatonna
8 - Winona
9 - Rochester Century

1 - 3 are very close. 4 - 6 are also a toss up. 7 - 8 have not played much as of yet. Century has guts to even play Varsity but they are the solid anchor.
