I celebrated my first anniversary.

We moved into our "starter" house in which we still reside.

I went to games 2 and 6 of the world series, watching game 7 at Champs on west 7th. I don't think they added the extra P in Champs yet.

In retrospect, my pot to pee in was thimblesque.

And I was king of the world.

... I had journied to Menominee Michigan to visit my great grandparents with my family. My great grandmother knew nothing about baseball but knew that me & my younger brothers spent just about every second of every day either playing or watching it, and she knew we were "sacrificing" a lot to be there for Game 1 of the World Series. So she took it upon herself to lay out a "picnic" in her livingroom in front of the tv for all of us, complete with soda (which she was usually very vocal about avoiding), popcorn and the world's greatest burgers from Mickey Lu's in Marinette Wisconsin. As upset as we were for not being in town for Game 1 at the time, it turned out to be just about perfect.

19 years ago, my 13 years old team played in the State Babe Ruth tournament played at... you guessed it... Frank Viola Field in Shoreview.

My son was born in July of '87.
He is now a sophmore at the U of M.
Living just 25 miles south of Marinette, there were not a lot of Twins fans around.
Game 6 that year was the best Neutron. They were getting smoked until Hrbek and Baylor hit those bombs. There was no way they were losing game 7 after that.
I gotta get those VHS tapes transfered to CD.

My 1st born not yet a year old, sweetie pie worked nights, I worked days.
We were less then a year into our 1st home.
Thank goodness for the Simpsons and Married with children.

The NFL player strike was on, and after that ended the Vikes would go on to beat the 49'rs to go to the NFC champ game..only to be stopped by the skins.

The North Stars were still here.

I drove a beat up Yellow and White Enconline Van that back fired

I had know idea what the heck I was doing or where I was going, all's I knew was diapers and how expensive everything seemed! and a great longing to get out of the house for a beer...when babies cry today I still cringe.

Life is very good today!

I was told in late July that due to budget cuts and consolodation my teaching and coaching positions were being cut, having a little mouth to feed and another on the way I walked into the local recruiting station and spent the fall of '87 in boot camp. You get very little news aside from the Sunday Atlanta Journal-Constitution but I had an inside; as a Drill Sergeant was going to school to get his BS and struggled in a couple of subjects so in trade for tutoring I did get to see games 6 and 7.

Ironically in 1991 I just returned from Kuwait to Germany in time to see games 6 and 7 of that World Series, although there it started at 2am.

Was only 6 months old during the WS, but got to "see" Game 2 because my Dad's company had a suite.

Like I said, only 6 months old so I didn't have a whole lot going on in my life...

In October of '87 football was on my front burner as I would have been reaching through another guy's legs awaiting the feel of a ball to set in motion one of the most feared ground attacks in northern Minnesota history.

I was working three jobs, one of which was in the concession stands at the Dome.

I was living in a big house in south Minneapolis with 7 or 8 other guys. We were so excited when the Twins clinched the division to make the playoffs that we popped the champagne that night, not even thinking we'd have a need for it later. The Twins clinched the pennant in an afternoon game in Detroit and I remember coming home to the 'big house' and one of my roomies sitting on the couch in dazed disbelief just saying 'The World f-ing Series, the World f-ing Series'.

Another roommate and a friend participated in the riot at Daytons later in the week for the tickets to the first two Series games, so I was able to go to the first game. One of the things I remember thinking was that it was the only time I'd ever see the Cardinals in the Dome. The Twins went up 2-0 and we were giddy, only to be sent into the depths of despair when the Cards came back. I did try to get tickets to games 6 and 7 but the demand was so great that it knocked out the phone service where I lived.

I worked at the Dome for game 6 and one thing I remember is that noone came out of the stands when the game was on. There was NO way I was going to work a game 7 though, we ended up watching it at our house which wasn't far from the Dome. When the Twins won we headed downtown and walked all the way from the Dome to Hennepin Avenue and back high fiving anyone and everyone, cops, people hanging out of their cars, it was cool.

'87 seemed to me like it was a bigger deal than in '91.

I like the wild card and the extra playoff games nowadays but the Twins in the playoffs now hardly compares to what '87 felt like.

The little woman bought me the World Series DVD set a couple months ago, but I had actually left it on the shelf until last night... I decided to check out some of the "bonus" features, which were sort of cool. They have about 10 minuts of footage from the parade and "rally" at the capitol (I completely forgot how crazy that parade was), and about 10 minutes of coverage of the end of the ALCS with the celebrations that you don't see a whole lot of anymore. They also have the last inning again st the Rangers when they clinched the AL West.

It's interesting to watch those sort of things again.

87 was great - remember sitting in my Indianapolis home with my 1 year old daughter on my knee. I was on the edge of the couch, hair on my neck standing straight-up , and tears coming down my face.

my daughter asking "why cry dadda"? It was almost as good as the Mircale on Ice feeling and maybe it would've been if I was home again in MN when it occurred.

last stuff my older brother gave me before he passed away a few months later was all the newspapers from series beginning to end, the Homer hankie, some commerative coin (which i later gave to his son, my godson when he graduated HS and went into the miliatry) and the Wheaties box. Of course I had the box front cover turned into a plaque for my office then.

We caught the parade in Minneapolis where it was kinda tame. Several of my roommates worked at the Heartthrob Cafe in downtown St.Paul and I heard stories that it was worse than St.Patrick's Day, you couldn't move and the bartenders basically opened the taps and just kept pouring beers until the kegs fried out.

That reception at the Dome after the Twins won the ALCS was something that all the players still talk about. It wasn't a scheduled night for Dome employees but I went in and worked and it was insane, nobody was expecting all the people that showed up for that. I'm going to have to get me one of those DVD sets...

That's definitely the one thing that's missing from the DVDs... the rally at the Dome. It was such an integral part of that whole season, and I think MLB (or maybe A&E who produced them) kind of dropped the ball on that with the DVDs.

Cambridge isn't far enough north and Falls threw too much to be the most feared ground attack in northern Minnesota history.

Last year when the Twins were making their playoff push I invested in every VHS/DVD I could find on Ebay. I don't regret it one bit. Still gotta get the new DVD set though.
