New Bantam "A" Coach At Saint Paul Johnson
The new head "A" Bantam coach at Saint Paul Johnson is the old Bantam "A" coach and current high school coach Steve "MOOSE" Younghans.
Any word/feeling on wether Moose is doing this as a short term assignment because the program needed help, or is he looking at it long term?
I'd be curious to see if it would make some of the kids more inclined to stay with him through the varsity level, rather than seeking out other high school programs to play for.

Bantam Coach
The way I heard it the Pee Wee coach decided to stay at Pee Wee's and not move up to Bantams and that Moose wanted to keep the kids in the Johnson program to stay at Johnson high school. In this day and age and just look at this board no one wants to coach for nothing any more, Money now drives people and like us here at Como we can't afford to PAY.
Moose and there Pee Wee coach are whats keeping Johnson's youth program going.

Re: Bantam Coach
I've said it here before, but I think the clock is ticking for our two schools... I have a hunch another consolidation is coming at some point and St. Paul will be down to one team, and it sucks. I think a lot of it is financial, but parents moving their kids to suburban schools is the big factor. Hopefully a move like Moose coaching the bantams will help, but it will be really interesting to see what kind of a difference it really makes.tunavichy wrote:The way I heard it the Pee Wee coach decided to stay at Pee Wee's and not move up to Bantams and that Moose wanted to keep the kids in the Johnson program to stay at Johnson high school. I know I talked to the Johnson president and he told me that District 1 has let kids from both Johnson and I know Como get releases to go play for Highland. I also know that kids just go to Highland and when they make teams than come back to their home associations and ask for waivers. This should not be allowed to happen and I know Jeff Vik wants to put a stop to this practice by Highland which they have been doing for years and does not think anything is wrong with it. What they want is for Como and Johnson to go away so they can Really call Highland Saint Paul's team like there jersey's say. Money talks and you know the rest of the saying.
Johnson A Bantam Coach
I think that Moose coaching the A bantams is a great thing. As this will be a major time commitment, I would assume he as one or two great assistant coaches to help him out. As far tunavichy saying that no one wants to coach for nothing anymore, keep in mind that the cost of gas has gone up and associations need to at a minimum help coaches with that expense as well as any out of town tournament expenses. I think that people are willing to coach for not too much money, just help cover expenses.
I think the main reason you do not see too many knowlegable coaches step up to the plate is why put up with all the crap from parents, etc. I believe this is more of a reason if you really ask them why.
I also agree that the clock is ticking for some of the schools and their hockey programs. Since the Hawks folded and a few other youth associations folded there is just no feeder program in these areas anymore. I know this is a topic that has been beaten to death already, but it is very true and may become fact very soon as sad as it is.
I really hope that Johnson and Como youth programs can keep running, I can't imagine what it would be like without them.

Couple of things.tunavichy wrote:I know I talked to the Johnson president and he told me that District 1 has let kids from both Johnson and I know Como get releases to go play for Highland. Many of the players who waiver out of Como & Johnson into Highland are players who started playing hockey at H/C because it was their home association. One morning they woke up to discover they are now in Como or Johnson because the district boundaries had been redrawn due to the West Side & Harding associations folding. These are the players from west 7th and Midway areas.
Secondly, no player from outside the association's area can register and try-out at Highland unless they have a signed waiver.
Three, HC does not want Como or Johnson to disappear. For hockey to thrive & grow in St. Paul these associations are vital. The St. Paul was added to the new jerseys simply because St. Paul is part of Highland's identity, just like it is at Como & Johnson.
Congrats to Johnson on landing a high quality coach for the Bantam As....great to hear!

CCLavin has his facts wrong. The last two years mothers came to see me for waivers after their child had made a team at Highland. How do I know? Because they are honest people and told me. I don't want to cause any problems but in every instance it was because they made a Highland team and their son could not play in league games that day or evening and that is why they needed it right away. League games usually are in November usually in the second half of the month and try-outs are in September or October.
