Oakland A's @ Twins, July 12th-15th (for boblee)
7-12, OAK: C Gaudin 8-3, 2.88 MIN: S Baker 3-3, 5.71
7-13, OAK: Kennedy 2-7, 4.45 MIN: Santana 10-6, 2.75
7-14, OAK: Blanton 8-5, 3.28 MIN: Silva 6-10, 4.58
7-15, OAK: Haren 10-3, 2.30 MIN: Bonser 5-6, 4.70
The Twins need to make a statement in this series. One that gives them the swaggar needed for Shanty's "tear". Where is Shanty anyway? On another bender?

Good job covering for boblee, Neutron.
Packerboy's going to cuff me upside the head for bringing this up, but as I look at the Twins' starters records and ERA I'm surprised at how mediocre they look. I suppose everyone looks mediocre compared to Oakland but I haven't really paid attention to the starters' numbers and I felt that Silva and Bonser have been OK this year; however. their ERAs are over 4.50 and they both have losing records. It seems to me that I read that Silva may be a desired free agent pitcher this offseason and the guy's lost ten games! Yeah, we do need some bats but the starters need to pick it up too if the Twins are going to make a run.

Wow, to say something like that ChrisK you must not be watching much Twins ball. I think it was given that in 6 or 7 of Silva's starts he got a total of 1 run for run support. With those numbers even Santana wouldn't being winning much. Yes, that's his record, but it also needs to be a reflection on his team. Our offense needs to score more runs.
Then you go to Baker who had an average of 9.5ish runs of run support in his previous 3 starts and then in his loss right after that he gives up 1 run in 8 innings and we don't score at all.
The twins need more average games. We either score a lot and give our starter an easy win, or don't score at all and give our starter an early dismissal. We need more in the middle. Plain and simple, we need to be more consistent.

ERA is more indicitive of a pitchers success than W-L. Any ERA over 4.5 falls into the below average category no matter your run support. Add this; only 3 staffs in the AL have an ERA over 4.5 so run support or lack there of won't win Silva or Bonser many more games. Probably the more interesting stat is Bonser has only 5 wins in 18 starts, Silva 6 in 18 starts. That's a lot of starts where the starter doesn't pick up a win seing as the Twins are over .500, Further negating the run support argument.

HSH, I do watch as many Twins games as I can, which given the fact that I don't have cable averages out to about one or two a week. I'm aware that Silva hasn't received much support, but like Goldy said his ERA is pretty high which means he's had some bad starts to go with the good.
Yes they need to be more consistent but along with the bats that should begin with the starters not named Johan picking up the pace.
One of the things that has kept the Twins in games this year has been their defense. They've been labeled as a good defensive team for quite a few years but I've felt in some years they were overrated. Not this year. Hunter has had several highlight reel catches already this year and Punto has been spectacular. Nick's bat has been a liability this year as I've said repeatedly, but he's been a highlight reel by himself the last two weeks. The Twins' pitchers' ERAs would be higher if they were getting average defense behind them.

The Twins have the best Bullpen in the league, they're not losing games for their starters.
The Twins are 9-9 in games Bonser has started; 1-6 since May. In those 7 games Bonser gave them 1 quality start. His problem hasn't been lack of run support. The Twins are 7-11 in games Silva has started 3-5 since May, 4-9 since April. He did have 1 game where the Twins lost 1-0 and 1 where the Twins lost 2-0, but aside from that run support hasn't been his problem either. So the Twins are 18-17 since June 1st, 4-11 in games started by Bonser or Silva; meaning they're 14-6 started by anyone else. Those two aren't giving the Twins a good chance at winning.
The Twins have 1 very good pitcher, 1 in Silva that is either on or not and has not been on very consistantly, some unproven works in progress in Garza, Baker, and Slowey, and a couple of BP tossers in Boof and Ortiz.
