Yes they're playing for our country, which is important, but they're not our best. The difference between best and 2nd best is miniscule. The difference is usually in a handful of evaluaters minds. It would be interesting to have a play-off format between NTDP kids and the team going over to Czech Republic. Leddy didn't do so well on the score sheet, but people say he's a really solid defenseman. Birkholz was the kid who scored 5 goals at camp and really played his way on to the team. Schmidt, Budish, and Walters all played on the team last year. Oliver and Maetche round out the group.Gopher Blog wrote:Looks like one more than I had heard. Congrats to all those guys.

Another website is reporting that two Michigan forwards have been added to the U17 team and fill the team out with 11 forwards - it appears that neither of these two players had incredibly impressive stats at the recent Select 16 camp but I'm sure it comes down to more than stats at something like this. The names were A.J. Treais and Zach Golembiewski.

What happened to the chatter that there were three forward spots left? It was also noted that a kid was a surprise in tryouts and was getting a look. Slovakia struck first at 2:39 of the first period. However, just 17 seconds later, forward Zach Budish (Edina, Minn.) scored on a breakaway to tie the game.
In the second stanza, Brad Smith’s (Trenton, Mich.) pass from the face-off dot found Josh Birkholz (Maple Grove, Minn.), whose shot from between the hash marks beat Slovakian goaltender Juraj Holly to give Team USA its first lead of the game. Maxwell stopped all 12 shots he faced in the period.
The Slovakians knotted the game on Philip Janosik’s second goal of the game at 6:09 of the third period.
With Team USA on the power play in overtime, Holly stopped a shot from the blue line by defenseman Paul Phillips (Darien, Ill.), but the rebound popped free to Walters who tapped it into the open net to give Team USA a 3-2 victory.
The United States returns to action tomorrow (Aug. 21) at noon (EDT) versus Germany at the 2007 Under-17 Five Nations Tournament in Strakonice, Czech Republic.

Three Power-Play Goals Lift Team USA Over Germany
STRAKONICE, Czech Republic. – Ryan Walters (Rosemount, Minn.) tallied two goals in the first period and goaltender Matthew Skoff (McKees Rock, Pa.) made 23 saves to help Team USA to a 3-2 victory over Germany at the Under-17 Five Nations Tournament here today.
“I was very pleased with the way we played tonight,” said Jon Cooper (St. Louis, Mo.), head coach of Team USA. “We are definitely getting better as a team every game. Our goal is to take points in every game we play, and so far, we’ve done that.”
Walters staked Team USA to a 2-0 advantage after 20 minutes with a pair of power play goals. The first came 5:43 into the contest when he gathered in a loose puck in front of the net and fired a wrist shot past netminder Niklas Treutle. Then, with 6:15 left in the period, Walters took a cross-crease pass from Kyle Beattie (Avondale, Ariz.) and tucked it home.
In the second frame, Germany cut the deficit in half after Marcel Ohmann beat Skoff on a penalty shot at 9:49. With Team USA on the power play, Steven Whitney (Reading, Mass.) one-timed Daniel Furlong’s (Malden, Mass.) pass into the German net to give Team USA a 3-1 lead. Just 2:03 later, Germany narrowed its deficit to a goal after Julian Bogner deflected a shot past Skoff.
Skoff stopped all eight shots he faced in the final stanza to help Team USA earn the victory and improve to 2-0-0-0 at the tournament.
