Major League Baseball announced today that they are adding a new statistic to their already extensive scroll of quantitative data. The new statistic is called RAF, an acronym for "runs after the fact".
With two more last night, the Minnesota Twins continued their blistering May by bringing their league leading RAF season total to 19. RAF accounts for nearly 10% of the club's already anemic offense.

Garza has some experience so bringing him up to replace Ortiz or whoever won't hurt, sign Hunter. Put Ortiz and Silva in the pen if you want to keep the younger guys throwing every 5th day. Rotation would look like we thought it would originally. sign Hunter The rotation could be Santana, Boof, Baker, Garza, Slowey in any order after #1. Maybe even Silva in there somewhere and one of them in the pen. sign Hunter.packerboy wrote:It was the case with Liriano.
In the case of Perkins sign Hunter, I think they see him as a reliever.
Garza has been here as a starter already.
I dont know anything about Slowey sign Hunter .
Besides aren't most relievers starters that didn't pan out at some point?

With Reyes' arm problems, we're short a 350 lb'er in the pen. Put Hi-Ho-Silva out to that pasture and bring both Garza and bring-along-Slowey up.
Silva has been one of their best starters.
I dont know if that will last but he is the least of their problems right now sign Hunter hit the boofin ball.
If you want to sign Hunter put Ortiz in the pen hit the boofin ball, fine.
Lets have the Matt Garza era begin. But dont throw Silva in with Ortiz, yet.

Lets add up the facts.EREmpireStrikesBack wrote:Hunter's price keeps going up and up... right now a 4 year deal @ 12 million per doesn't look so bad. He's got $15 mil a year all over him right now and it can only go up.

10. Tough i.e. plays hurt
Now the value of the franchise that Carl owns has increased by about 500 million due to a publicly financed stadium being built. Attendance will be 2.5 to 3 million. He'll have all the "revenue streams" in the new stadium. I see no reason NOT to give him 15 mil for five years. We are not rebuilding and in a dire need for prospects/draft choices. If Carl doesn't sign ALL the quality players we have, he should be run out of town. Small market my axe. The money is there.
Yup, sign him or get out of the business.
He is 31 , and at the top of his game hitting wise. Will his defensive skils decline during the contract? Maybe but put him in left and put the kid in center for defense.
Sign Hunter and forget Santana. Pitching we have. Players like Hunter cant be replaced.

Small market solution.
You guys are pretty good at spending others' money. Ever thought of a career in Minnesota government?
Hennepin county was conned into building a stadium for a billionaire,....maybe Dakota county can be conned into subsidizing Hunter's salary,.....Anoka county can take Santanna's,......got to leave Ramsey county for Mauer.
Dakota county for Hunter, Packerboy,.....sounds good. We want to pay for the hitter, right!

Since Friday, would you say the Twins are hitting well?
In their last five games they've scored 8, 5, 5, 4, and 7 runs for a 3-2 record.
To answer the question, I don't think they are hitting the cover off the ball but they are resembling what a major league club should do at the dish. Morneau and Hunter have delivered the big blows, just as they should, but even peripheral players like Cirillo have been heard from. Mauer will be back and for all accounts, will be healthy immediately. Cuddyer won't repeat last season again but even he will provide some much needed instant offense before the year is done. Someone could tell Kubel and Punto that the '07 season has begun, if they don't respond the cavalry will be coming for them.
This club, even as it is comprised now can hang around .500, and for now that will suffice.
Stay tuned.

Dear knowlze pull your head out. We invested in the Twins. I for one expect a return on that investment.
Any other silly comments?
While I pull my head out, Neut,......how about if you explain to us how "we invested in the Twins".
If you are referring to the Hennepin County sales tax, it may be better spent using it to build an office building for Knowlzee's business, better chance of realizing some actual return on "investment",....something more valuable than the privelege to resign ballplayers at obnoxious prices.
Just curious, Nuet,......if "our" expected return on investment isn't realized,.....what do "we" do? Can "we" fire the Pohlad family? Maybe "we" can get a better run team to play in "our" stadium.
If building a stadium was truly a good "investment",......I wonder why Carl Pohlad didn't build it himself,.......but "we" did. I guess "we outsmarted the banker there, huh?

Knowlze, you and others make a strong argument against pro sports. I agree with many of the arguments made ripping pro sports and even the college sports environment today.
But either you want them or you dont. If you want them, sign then you pay Hunter 15 million and you build a new ballpark sign Hunter etc. etc.
If I am going to pay $ 47 for a box seat, it better be to watch a major league outfield sign Hunter.
We cant sign everybody we want and we don t need the best of the best facilities. But, if we are going to do it, do it right.

Like you, I don't have a problem with Kubel, it's the guys upstairs behind the glass that bug me once in a while. Cuddyer seemed to turn the corner last year after he eclipsed a 1000 big league AB's, Hunter, now with 4,000 AB's seems to be a better hitter.
My biggest problem is the organization is asking Kubel to do something he is not ready to do. Each start Santana makes is one closer to him becoming a Yankee, Met, or Dodger and a for Hunter, each dinger is another step closer to new paper in another wealthier city. The Twins' chance to win with this group is closing fast and with an infield from left to right that goes Punto, Bartlett, & Castillo, you have three guys, plus Kubel, and a bench of reserves who can't play from behind. If Cuddyer goes back to .259 17 81, the Twins are in big trouble.
The Twins are doing it on the cheap and asking Kubel or Rondell to put up Raul Ibanez type numbers. And the way I see it today, LF will need to put those numbers to be 20 over by Sept 20th.

I don't have a problem with giving at bats to Kubel, he's a guy that has shown promise and they have to find out if he's got it. It's the at bats to guys like Punto that bother me.
This team is at least one big league bat short of solidifying the lineup (with Mauer back of course) and they've got three slots, DH, 3rd base and LF that they could fill with someone who can hit the boofin' ball. I worry that Ryan will once again try to do something on the cheap. He seems to shop with a Goodwill philosophy, only looking at what's available cheaply rather than figuring out which players he wants and trying to deal for them.
Whoever said earlier that the role players have not come through like they did last year is exactly right. Ryan did a good job of fixing last year's team when he cut loose some role players, but he's got a tougher job this year with no Liriano or Bartlett to come in and jumpstart the team. In all likelihood he will have to go outside the organization to find some players to fill the holes in the lineup. Let's hope he shops at someplace other than Goodwill this time around.
The good news is that they've won two series in a row, but the problem with this team has been consistency. At least one more bat would help.

Well, keeping that pitch count limit at 100 for the starters really helps. Crain, Perkins and Reyes know that' s right.
Sign Hunter the DH on Wed was hitting .234 with no HRs in his life (Tyner).
This team is treading water because the top players are earning their money but the bragain basement players are contributing very little.
You get what you pay for sign Hunter.
Lets give Ryan credit for Castillo but thats about it sign Hunter
The team needs Mauer back.
But they need to pitch better too. They have given up as many runs as they have scored.
They can and will play better sign Hunter. As far as jump starting the team, the only thing that is available is the young starting pitchers in Rochester.

packerboy, are you saying they need some pitching help? I thought they just needed to hit the boofin' ball! Are you coming over to the dark side?
You're right that the young arms are the only help that's available from Rochester, so Ryan will have to find hitting help from somewhere else. I'd like to see Ryan make some moves that would rival what Billy Beane has done in Oakland to fill holes in his team.

They will need help if Ortiz continues on his current pace. But they have help within. Baker proved what we have been saying since Feb sign Hunter. Bring up the young guys. They will be as good as the bargain basement stiffs and gain experience.
Beane did a nice job last year when he signed Frank Thomas sign Hunter which was a move the Twins could have made but didnt. We got Rondell and his screaming hammy.
Other teams sign offensive help, but sign Hunter the Twins arent able to.

.209 - Cirillo, 207lbs
.230 - Punto, 186lbs

.214 - Ford, 200lbs

620 AB, 3 hr's.
Very little is generous. Gardy doesn't have many pinch hitting options does he.
These boys are getting heavy.
After this appearance tonight, I hope we've seen the last of him. They know every fifth game, they're going to have to outslug their oppenent, and they're in no position to do that.packerboy wrote:They will need help if Ortiz continues on his current pace.
