MN Selects this weekend

Post by mn44hockey »

tourney starts this friday...anyone know the rosters??

it seems like this tournament is becoming more for younger players every year since more 7th-8th graders are choosing to play u12/u14 rather than varsity...what are everyone's thoughts on this? these have just been my observations through the past few years though and i'm sure there are quite a few HS players playing in this tourney...

Isn't this the youth tournament that's organized strictly by birth year? If it's like it used to be, someone from each of the team areas (North, South, East and West) forms their team by invitation only, based on who they know (or think) is good and from references. There are no try outs.

For the older years the teams can be made up of kids from either youth hockey or young high school players, but it's basically up to the guys that are organizing each team. I'm thinking of the tournament that's held in St. Cloud, so I hope that's the one you're talking about.

I believe you are correct in that there are no tryouts and teams are selected by coaches. As far as birth years, this is correct too but I believe the oldest players this year are 93s. Older players are playing in the SuperSeries which starts tonight at Plymouth Ice Arena.

MN Selects

Post by SECoach »

The Minnesota Selects tournament is in St. Cloud and features boys and girls teams separated by North (Northern Minnesota), South (south metro and southern Minnesota), East (East metro), and West (West Metro). The teams are arranged by birth year. This year's tournament is 1993-1997. The teams are selected by the coaches and their are strict limits as to what organizations each team can choose from how many from one area can play on a team (3 player max). The players can be from youth programs or high school. The '93 and '94 teams will likely each have several high school players. Although the coaches compete with the Super Series (same weekend) for players, Selects tends to get the stronger players. This is not always the case but generally.

Which leads me to ask, why would you schedule these two head-to-head? I would think there would be some other weekend to move one of them to...

To some degree if they are scheduled the same weekend then even more kids have the opportunity to compete, which especially at these younger ages is nice since they don't try out any way. Gives them a bit of a taste typically playing with others that love the game as much as they do.

I guess I can see that, but what are the costs of participation in these events? I think sometimes kids have the love, but not the $. Hockey is more expensive than I think we realize.

Agreed. I just remember it was always a scramble for the coaches to line up kids ahead of time, before they committed to playing in the other tournament. I also remember that the strength of each team in large part depended on who was in charge - some were more knowledgable about the talent from other associations than others, and then better at "recruiting" ahead of time.

Two or three years ago it was around $175 as I recall. I wouldn't doubt that it's $200 or more now. Most stay overnight in St. Cloud for at least one night, depending on their schedule. Figure in everything, including meals, and it's easily $400. One good thing about Selects, at least, was that there was no admission charge. At the Classic Elite Tournament at the Super Rink, which was very similar, they always charged admission in addition to even a steeper team tournament fee. Not sure if this still is the case.

The Minnesota Selects Tournament is nearing it's 20th year and is run by a non profit. Most similar tournaments try to mirror Selects and were started for profit. For example, the Selects tournament is $165.00 with no gate fee while the Elite Classic is $190.00 plus a $12.00 gate fee. The number of years it has been running, the lower cost, and the general integrity that is expected of the coaches in selecting their teams are the primary reason it get's the best players. There are always exceptions but Minnesota Selects is very well run. At the Elite Classic there were several examples of a team having 3 players from one area and another from a town such as Marine on the St. Croix (really giving Forest Lake Hockey 4 players, ironically a coaches son). This "bending of the rules" is not allowed at Selects. There are considerably fewer player selections made based on who your daddy is. The Super Series is extremly lax and you frankly end up with nearly "town teams" playing in it. There are of course parents and players that choose the Super Series for other personal reasons that make it work better for them.

Our daughter played on both a Selects and Elites teams for multiple years. Our experience was the coaches she had were very organized, knew the team roster well in advance, had girls from a wide area and really promoted team play. I do remember reading rosters where I tried to figure out how the geography was determined at Elites. Personally, we preferred Selects can't quite pinpoint one thing why though. She is a 92 so no longer eligible for those but saw a bunch of her teammates at NDP Phase I which was fun, too. I don't remember what the costs were. I do understand the expense that was referenced but if you talk to other parents who have kids that play other sports they are always spending money on weekend tournaments and all, too, so I don't think it is an exclusive issue to hockey.

The 92s can't play in Minnesota Selects so there is a very strong class of 92s playing in the Minnesota Super Series. The U14 North and South teams are pretty strong. There are a lot of P1 & P2 players. The Rosters:

South
Maggie Nelson Goalie Edina
Shelby Veenker D Windom
Allison Micheletti F Rosemount
Brenna Flately F Minnetonka
Rachael Kelly F Rosemount
Rachel Ramsey F Minnetonka
Jordyn Burns F Benilde
Christina Broderson D Breck
Emily Kleidon F Tartan
Amanda Colin F Burnsville
Rachel Vath D Rosemount
Alex Citrowske F Prior Lake
Greer Vogl D Edina
Paige Burgeson F Breck
Rose Alleva F Red Wing
Emma Krieter F Edina
Asha Payne Goalie Eden Prairie

North
Sara Gustafson Goalie Cloquet
Jessica Solberg D Silver Bay
Kirstin Sandstrom F/D Silver Bay
Amanda Lovelace F Warroad
Francie Piche D East Grand Forks
Amy Olson F Rosseau
Amanda Monkman F Roseau
Emily Larson F/D Bemidji
Annie Swartz D Bemidji
Brook Story F Warroad
Erika Magnusson F Fergus Falls
Ashley Stenerson F Moorhead
Keely Gregoire D East Grand Forks
Haley Johnson F Bemidji
Michelle Anez F Little Falls
Nicole Sunsdahl F Rosseau
Tamara Twite G East Grand Forks

So far the South is 3-0 and North 2-1 and they meet in the Championship game Sunday at 3:30 PM at Plymouth. Of special note, Jordyn Burns has 8 goals in 3 games.

South?? You mean South Metro...
No Mary Grace Flesher of Rochester
No Emma Leof of Rochester
No Keri Pickel of Rochester
No Michelle Bonapace-Potvin of Rochester (not sure if she's a 92)
No Maddy Passingham of Albert Lea

If they're going to call it a South team they're going to actually have a couple players from the South.
Of special note, Jordyn Burns has 8 goals in 3 games
Nice work Jordyn, a top notch person and player.

How did the championship come out between the North and South 92's in the Super Series?

Molly did very well, and not surprised by this as I hear she's a great player.

The 94 East did well - 3-2 L to N in Championship after beating them earlier in the tourney... and Emily Reibert-7th Grade-F-Simley & her line had a great weekend too I hear. She scored 20% of her team's points, and her line put up 40% of their scoring - allowing just 1 goal total. And yes, I'm biased on this one.

Molly Illikained was likely the strongest single forward at the 1994 level. Reibert had a very good weekend. East had a very talented and balanced team team and allowed only 5 goals in 4 games while North allowed only 6 goals in 4 games. This compares with 10 allowed by west and 14 by south. This speaks both to the goaltending and defensive play for East and North as well as the offensive power on both teams. Both games between East and North were very competive games.

At the 1993 level Hannah Brandt stood out once again.

Not surprised by Brandt.

Do the lines/players play equally in this event, or do certain teams play one line more than another?

The full expectation is that all lines will play equally with no pp/pk units. Some follow it and some don't.
