Coaching openings

Coach Oliver can skate, but has a considerable injury from his football days, that supposedly locks up pretty bad in the winter. He is without a doubt a rough and tumble character, and was seen by many as a questionable appointment four years ago.RamFan2010! wrote:I heard the parents wanted to get rid of him, but now they dont want to even try cause he coached them to a Section 8AA title for the second year.... but really our team just has talent, I think he is a ok coach, but I really think all the assistant coaches really help out alot, like Billy Lund, etc. Is it true he doesnt skate with the team , cause he cant or just doesnt feel the need to??? This is all stuff I have heard, but I live in a small town so everybody knows everything around here, dont take it as concrete stuff, prob. just rumors or somthing.gatzke wrote:i've heard rumors, and don't quote me on it, that a petition is going around to get rid of oliver in roseau.
Two things work in his favor:
1. It is awful tough to fire a coach that has just been to the state tournament. The last coach Roseau fired via petition was in the late eighties so they could bring in Blais. That coach made the mistake of losing to Warroad in the Section final.
2. There is a player named Nick Oliver that Roseau would like to keep in the system.
Gotziaman had to know what he was getting into with Oliver. It's been the same at Glyndon, Moorhead, and Crookston. He's not easy to be around but he wins.
I believe if Roseau were to win the title, he would be the first to win a football title (Glyndon-Felton) and a hockey title.

You are right on there.
It is hard to fire one who is successful.
I really want Roseau to do well, along with Warroad. Let's hear if for Section 8A and 8AA. Represent the north and let the city guys know that the small town flavor is where it is at.
Again, good luck to all the teams. Make it a good one!!!

Park Hockey Coach Opening
This is the best thing to ever happen to Park. Hopefully they start fresh and clear house and get somebody in that will help the kids and give them some direction. The program has been a mess for the last 8 years on and off the ice.

Lets see who they hire before we start the parade. The AD has a history of not giving a crap about the boys sports programs. Just look at the football program.
worth it ?
With the new HS coming in to the Park/Woodbury area, is it worth a good coach coming in. Is Park going to lose kids to that school and how big is their youth program, and where will they end up ?

60% woodbury/40% cottage grove, this will hurt CG's youth program the most as woodbury is ready to add another A team the way they are now. cg has good numbers in squirts and mites but the split will kill the peewee kids. I also heard they are not allowing any transfers for the first 2 years, if you are in the new school area you go no matter what.
I think we can put this one to rest. With a State final appearance, win or lose, if the parents have any class they will back off. Winning solves discontentment!RamProud wrote:I'd imagine that if there is a petition, this state tournament could hold the key to if they keep or cut the olive. coaching changes
Just a thougt. Are high school coaches suppose to be the ones to teach players discipline or is that the responsability of the parents? When you can't win in dist 8 in youth hockey are the coaches suppose to wave their magic wand and turn them into winners in the east suburban conf. ? Ive been in CG for 40yrs and kids have been going to private schools forever. The difference is depth. The kids that left the last few years would not have made that big a difference. If people really care about CG coaches they would start paying more attention to whos coaching at the youth level.Last year they had a B-bantam coach that practiced line changes. The problem is greater than just the high school coaches. And anyone telling you different isnt being honest or they are just mad because they have no talent.

Good that someone does.... well I agree with whoever said that about putting this to rest, you cant try to fire someone after a State AA win. Mostly cause our town revolves around hockey so if we win everything is awesome!hockeyfan32 wrote:Billy skates with the team but he is a busy guy so he misses someRamFan2010! wrote:I heard the parents wanted to get rid of him, but now they dont want to even try cause he coached them to a Section 8AA title for the second year.... but really our team just has talent, I think he is a ok coach, but I really think all the assistant coaches really help out alot, like Billy Lund, etc. Is it true he doesnt skate with the team , cause he cant or just doesnt feel the need to??? The parents aren't in the locker room. The coaches don't have to teach discipline but they should uphold some sort of discipline. IE;topshelf stick incident, players with bad grades still playing. That is the job of the HS coach not just show up at the rink and throw some pucks out. Why have the top players left or quit mid year if it wasn't the coaches fault? That had nothing to do with thier youth coach from 3 years ago. It is time for a fresh start and some new blood. 10 years of it is long enough talent or not. The coaches are obivously just as frustrated as the players.
According to the St.Cloud Times article some time back he was going to be GM. As far as a new coach I would like the Eagles to go into a direction of a former player who is familiar with the program-I thought Mike Hiltner did a great job when he was there. I would like to see SCC assistant Tom Bruce or maybe John Bergo type to take over and get the program back to respectability.

A LONG time ago they did an article on Larson being GM. A few weeks ago they did an article on him becoming coach.
The article was archived online...but here is the opening line..."Craig Larson wants to someday be a college coach. That's one reason why Larson turns in his resignation as St. Cloud Apollo's boys hockey coach today. The 31-year-old Grand Rapids High School graduate is taking over as general manager and head coach of the Granite City Lumberjacks, a Junior 'B' team that opens play at the Municipal Athletic Complex for the 2007-08 season."--Tom Elliott, SCtimes.com
Tom Bruce? Not a snowball's chance in hell. Well, I guess their may be a snowball's chance in hell, but who knows. His kids are in the private school system. Apollo's coaching job isn't that desirable.
I'd be surprised if Pete Matanich didn't apply for the job. He has a pretty good resume as assistant at Tech for the past several years. Also a former Eagle.
