1996 HM - WBL
I was at that 1996 game. HM was ranked #1 in the State. Landon Luther was the WBL goalie, I think?, who stymied HM again & again. HM lost it in OT. It was the 3rd straight year that a very talented HM team lost to WBL in the Section playoffs. Nate Mauer scored 50 goals for that HM team that year but his class of seniors never got to the state tournament.

Landon Luther was the goalie and freshman Sean Roed scored the overtime goal.stpaul wrote:I was at that 1996 game. HM was ranked #1 in the State. Ever!!
Ever goes back a long ways!
How about the 1960 Ram team! Two time defending state champs. Undefeated going into the regions(as they were called back then). Twelve minute periods(cause the city teams could not afford icetime).
Warroad knocks them off 1-0 in the semifials. Warroad gets beat by TRF.
Rams win the title again in 1961
The streak would have looked liked this:
'57 runner-up
'58 Champs
'59 Champs
'60 ????Champs
'61 Champs

Guaranteed it was 1992 that 6th seeded Mounds View beat 3rd seeded White Bear at Aldrich Arena.mnpuckster wrote:Actually WBMD, WBL was the 1 seed in 91 when Bonin, Henderson and Parnell lost to a brutally overmatched Mounds View Team. I remember how big of an upset that was. Everyone in the arena was stunned when the buzzer sounded.
In 1991, White Bear blew a 3-0 lead in the finals with Hill and ended up losing 4-3.

1983
Edina vs. Columbia Heights
At that time Edina was the most hated hockey team in the state. They were state champs in '82 and would go on to be state champs in '84. It was the opening game of the tournament and a goalie name Reggie Miracle (what a great name) played the game of his life. The 83 tournament is remembered for that and the start of the Burnsville run of the eighties.

Greatest upsets???
Two others come to mind. 1982, Hibbing loses to White Bear Mariner in the semifinals, despite having a roster full of D-I signees. And 1991, when Duluth East came into the tourney as a relative unknown and then completely dismantled the top-ranked, Darby Hendrickson-led Richfield club 5-1 in the Quarterfinals.
