Nice to see Grand Rapids/Greenway didn't get shoved to 8AA.

Nice to see they broke up Section 6AA, moving both Eden Prairie and Edina to 2AA. A very bold move that will totally change the playoff picture - for the better IMO.

Also interesting that they moved North Metro into 6AA - BSM could get their rematch late next year.

Just did a quick study on how the new AA alignments balance out, based on the final Let's Play Hockey rankings. Here are the number of teams, by section, in LPH's final Top 15 ranking:

Section - # Top 15 teams
1 - 0 (although Farmington, No. 2 in Class A, is moving up to this section in AA)
2 - 3 (including No. 2 EP, No. 4 Edina and No. 7 Holy Angels)
3 - 2 (Burnsville highest at No. 11)
4 - 2 (including No. 1 Stillwater & No. 5 Roseville)
5 - 2 (Centennial highest at No. 9)
6 - 3 (including No. 3 BSM, No. 6 North Metro & No. 8 Wayzata)
7 - 2 (GRG highest at No. 12)
8 - 1 (Bemidji highest at No. 10)

Based on this quick analysis, it looks like there will be better balance next year in AA. Going into the new year the toughest section IMO will be 2, followed by 4 and 6. Some schools will obviously lose more than others due to graduation, while others will improve for any number of reasons. But this is at least a starting point to look at the comparative strength of new sections based on this year's results.

I wonder how KRACH would change the results of this analysis... I think it would show a pretty equal distribution too...

You need to look at graduation I agree, as well as top ranked youth teams, etc.

Most curious to me is the inclusion in section 1A of Plainview-Elgin-Millville. As far as I know, there isn't a girls hockey program anywhere in the near future for that school.

In the new section 2A, Mankato West finds themselves plunked into the same section as New Prague. It could be a closer match than some might think.

There has certainly been lots of discussion on this forum about what they look for when doing the section alignments. It still seems to be based MOSTLY on geography, which you can clearly see when you click on the maps you linked to above. The schools are still grouped together about as close as you could get them. The big difference this time is they totally re-drew where the boundaries are in the south, southwest, west and northwest suburban areas. In comparison, it seems that the southeast, east, northeast and north central suburban areas didn't experience as much change.

Also if one of their goals was to achieve "numerical balance" they did in the process also achieve more "talent balance" - whether this was unintentional or not I guess we'll never know.

Bold move, or did the same Muscle that got to the BSM AD to force a coach change last year throw their $/weight around with the MSHSL and force the change? Guess we'll never know the real story, but the sections sure look different on that side of the metro.

This has got to be one of the most ridiculous and offensive things I have ever read here. To equate an internal coaching change to supposedly trying to buy influence with the MSHSL is beyond unfair, and deserves no further comment.

Thank you for explaining your process bghockey. I think the new section assignments make more sense now than they have for years, and at least based on the current state of affairs (which will change) also represents a pretty even balance of power too.
