I think if Mayo had any coaching they would be able to win this game and would have won 2 other games against Century this year. If I remember correctly, Mayo had big leads in both of these games only to blow both of them? I think Mayo pulls off the upset tonight. Either way, I think Lakeville North goes to state from this section??? I am not totally blaming this on Mayo's coaching. Century is obviously more talented and has more firepower than Mayo. How can you blow a big lead twice to Century this year? I think it will be Mayo in this game.

How has donahugh played good??? Last time i checked he has given up 22 goals to century in 4 games and the reason Mayo has had leads on Century is cause Mayo is not a big game for Century like it is the other way around for Mayo. 4 wins and 0 losses is no fluke. I think we can safely say Century is the better team in every aspect. Mayo should have had no goals tonight but they got the Mayo luck and scored on an empty net

Southernmnscout - Mayo only had a lead in one game against Century this year - the 8-7 shootout in Jan.
The first game was 3-1 Century...shots were about 40-20
Second game was 7-1 Century - Mayo looked/played tired - including Donohue (two consecutive OT games and tons of shots like usual)
Third game Mayo had a 3-0 lead at one point but also trailed 8-5 and made it 8-7; again not one of Donohue's best nights.
Tonight Donohue played well making almost 50 saves.
4-1 w/ an emptynetter.
Not sure if it is coaching as much as youth/inexperience. Mayo's defense struggled all year. The only solid guy they have is Mitch Anderson. They only graduate 1 of the top 6 so they will be improved next year.
I gotta believe that Coach Grosso has the knowledge and has been around long enough to coach the team well. He is one of the most respected coaches in Minnesota - esp. southern Minn...

How has donahue played good? are you kidding me he made 48 saves tonight against the best team in the section. He's carried this team to where they got.mnhshockey00 wrote:How has donahugh played good??? w/o donahue mayo woulda been f'ed over. There was no defense to help him. Then when they got the puck down in the century zone they would turn it over on a stupid pass! They need to bring in new coaches. Becasue the ones they have know dont do crap

I don't think getting beat by a superior team is an indication that the coaches stink, nor are players making bad passes.
By that logic, Lovie Smith should be fired for Rex Grossman's poor play in the Super Bowl.
Last year Mayo had Century on the ropes in the semi-finals....the Panthers had two breakaway goals - one SH when Canzanello had a shot blocked, the other in OT when Ferschweiller tried to stickhandle just outside his offensive blueline. But you are probably right, Coach Grosso probably tells these guys to do these things so his former player Bruce Frutiger can feel good about himself as Century's coach right?
Just like I am sure Coach Grosso tells people not to pick up open guys in front of the net.
One thing to point out is that Mayo's talent level has fallen quite a bit in the past 10 years - since the days of Notterman, Leimbek, Colgan, Ranfranz, etc....true, there have been some great individuals since then (older Thawauld, two Canzanellos, etc), but nothing of that sort of depth you saw from 1994-2000.
No offense because he is a great player, but Matt Alexander would have been a 3rd lind player in 1998-2000. Mayo was loaded then and gave two eventual state champs all they could handle in the quarterfinals (not to mention beating Jefferson in the state tourney in 2000).
True Mayo has struggled....no finals since 2000...however, they won the section 6 times since 1992 - who else can say that?
And if I remember right, they have been 6-0 in section finals since 1992! (Is that right Goldy?)
Century has reached their 7th straight section final and has had more talent than most teams most of those years. If they lose on Thursday, should they change coaches? I believe losing 6 out of 7 times when it matters most is called folding under pressure right?

I hope you beat them soundly dirtyhock! Win for all of Rochester and then sneak in a win at the X too!
And don't think I am saying Century's coaches are bad, just using the example for the sake of arguement.
All the criticism sounds like the old saying my old coach used to say:
If you win, it is the kids.
If you lose, it is the coach.
If you don't play my kid, you are an a-hole.
Well my dad was the a-hole and I still tell him to shut up to this day when he rants about stuff that happened in 1984.

Lakeville (North) is a pretty impressive 4-0 in setion finals.
Century has had some talented teams that haven't won, the 2001 comes to mind. I think that's the best team they've ever put on the ice. They've had some better individuals since then but as a team I think that was the best.
As for coaching, even the greatest chef can't make a cake without eggs. Both JM and Mayo have kids seeing significant ice time who would have been marginal JV players 5 years ago. Talent has just dropped off. 5 years ago Rochester's wrestling teams were bottom feeders, this year 2 made the section semifinals. 5 years ago they struggled to send to wrestlers to the State tournament, this year they're sending 7. Many good athletes aren't playing hockey, I don't think you can blame the coaches for that. When your roster is filled with kids with bad hands, slow feet, and little discipline no coach can change that.
Mayo is young and probably should have the best team in town the next couple of years. Talent wise I thought this Mayo team did about what was expected, hope Donohue keeps it close enough so with some extra effort and a bounce they might be ok.

That will silence the mayo fans till next year without a doubt century has prolly had the hardest working team in the section for the past 7 years talent wise no but this year there team is proven in almost every aspect maybe not goaltending as much i dont think lakeville has the harder working team or better players this year sorry lakeville not this year Century WILL BE REPRESENTING SECTION 1AA THIS YEAR
LHS9 i assume you play for lourdes great accomplishment. Sure the big nine is not great thats why Century DOMINATED it . And if you are from lourdes im pretty sure you played atleast 5 teams from the big 9 and didnt you only beat owatonna 3-2. Well if you look back century 6-0 and 6-2. Also you beat austin so did they same scores and albert lea so since big 9 teams suck so bad you can pretty much say that you are not much better. I also think that Century in the overall standings between all teams are ranked higher then you and you guys play class A hockey maybe its just me but there are only a select number of teams that are better then teams in the big 9. So before you go assuming everyone from the big nine sucks and say they will never win at state just wait and watch and when century makes it to the tournament and wins their first game and lourdes is wacthing them from in the stands im pretty sure your going to feel pretty smart because well you can perdict it all. But the best of luck to lourdes getting by STA.... what was the first game 6-1 or so i cant remember i think i left when it was 4-0 gosh i cant remember.
