I caught wind of the A coach of the year or I should say Co-Coaches of the year as 2 coaches were given the award. For Class A, the coaches of the year are Tim Moe from Crookston and Chris Peterson from Richfield. Way to GO coaches and congratulations on the seasons.

I know that there are two sets of these by section and then an overall state for each class - one done by 3M/Wild and one done by Coaches Assn. If anyone has the lists please post them here...

The 3M / Wild awards still show last year. I thought the Coaches Association site would have everything listed from yesterday but they don't and there were too many names and faces to keep track.

I'm going to ask our coach to find out if after the Ms. Hockey Banquet next year if a compiled list could be photo copied and handed out on exit so you can keep track of it all.

Good ideas if you ask me!

When do they cut off voting? Do the results in the State Tournament count?

If so, I would think Jack Gravel deserves serious consideration. First year team, unranked for most of the season, 2nd Place in the AA tournament.

Not too bad if you ask me.

Jack is my choice, but he was pretty high on my list before the NMS existed too!

The 3M / Wild award is announced April 5 (subject to change) at a Wild game according to the MGHSCA web site. They announce both the boy's and girl's winning coaches in A and AA.

So Stillwater starts the season 0-3-1, giving a pretty good idea of what their talent level is. Their only true offensive star is a sophomore. Then they get better and better and by Christmas they play EP at the Kaposia and take them to overtime (IMHO Stillwater outplayed them but gave up a couple soft goals). Then they keep getting better the rest of the season and are the only team who takes care of business every single game through the section and state tournaments. How is that not a spectacular coaching job?

Stillwater

I agree coach Scheid did a great job there this season, and I can't explain why he didn't get the recognition.

I did see that EP vs Still game a little different. I thought it was pretty evenly played, and I think if you talked to the EP coaches they would say they were hurt by some soft goals as well.

Coaches Award

Post by JJhockeySS »

The awards are given by the MGHCA, and below are the general criteria, but not restricted to this. The award is voted on by coaches.

Is the coach a member of the Minnesota Girls Hockey Coaches Association? (mandatory)

Did the coach display good sportsmanship throughout the season?

Based on your observations of the individual coach; did the coach display high ethical and moral character?

How did the coach’s team perform this season? Played better then expected, worse then expected, or about what you thought the team would be do?

The coach’s team’s won/loss record for the season.
How did the coach’s team finish in their Section Tournament?

Did the coach’s team advance to the State Tournament?

Did the coach’s team improve its performance and/or record from the previous year?

Has the coach attended and participated in the Fall and Spring Meetings/Clinics presented by the MGHCA?
Has the coach made other contributions to the betterment of girls’ high school hockey?(Has the coach taken an active role in the leadership of the MGHCA or any of its programs by becoming Section Reps, Executive Officers, Senior Classic or Junior Festival coaches, Ethics Committee Members, etc?)

Has the coach been active in working with their youth hockey organization by providing leadership and direction?

Other criteria:
Years of service.
Overall coaching record.
Professional relationships with the other high school coaches.
Tactical and teaching expertise in regards to ice hockey.

Except it's not at all uncommon for the coach of a championship team to win the award. I think TS would have been a very deserving winner...if he had won. No complaints with the choice from me...but I'm not informed as per B'ville season, strength of schedule, results etc. I know I sure was impressed with that #17 whoever she is.

Agreed this has happened in the past, but the voting is done prior to the championship game. So if the winning coach wins they have won this award prior to taking the ice for the championship game.

Thanks for the outline of the criteria. Now if I could see how they came up with the winners.....
I think in double A the winner should be the coach at North Metro.
