Not sure that it matters a ton, but 1AA is still unsettled. There could be 3 Rochester teams, or various combinations of 2 teams or even only 1 team.

How does this section look now that the Rochester teams have been finalized, or have they? Will there be one Rochester team that is dominant or are they somewhat equal?

There will be 3 Rochester team; Mayo, Century and JM/Lourdes. Mayo will still almost certainly dominate, albeit without Lourdes senior forward Gretchen Leyendecker. She'll help JM/Lourdes contend with some of the Big 9 teams. Century may have a tough year, but goalie Liz Maidl could keep them in games.

Sectionwise, I have a couple of questions. Fairmont is AA? Is this because of players from outlying communities, or are they that big? With 3 Rochester teams, do they just add a 9th vs. 8th play-in game for sections? One Lakeville question; did Andy Foss go to another school (and which one), or will she play for South?

They will just add the 8th/9th school I believe to the section.

I didn't hear that Foss left LVS, but I will say she's a great kid - had the cahnce to coach her at P2 NDP last spring.

Unfortunately I can't edit the poll above to remove Fairmont once it's been voted on...

You've probably already heard, but Andi Foss transferred to Blake. Great kid - I'm sure South misses her alot.

1/2 South @ Mayo

Post by pickme »

South 2, Mayo 4 (en)...both goalies did not give up good goals.

South had a 2-0 lead with thier first goal being a shot from the point that went off a skate and the second being a very weak goal (basically dumped in on net and bounced over the goalie's stick). Mayo came back with 2 soft goals...one bounced over the goalie, next goalie way off her angle, 3rd...I didn't see (in bathroom...oops!). South's goalie (8th grader, Laden...IMO will be one heck of a goalie(if she's not already!) made some very big saves...only bad part was the ones she didn't make were definitely ones she should have had. Not the usual Mayo team/style, I think South took them out of their game? Mayo outshot South 30+ to 15 or so but the game was much closer than that...end to end, quite exciting. Only 1 penalty, called after Mayo scored their empty net goal on South...maybe that's the most interesting fact!

JM/Lourdes

Season ended for Rochester JM/Lourdes. Fondest wishes for seniors Sammy McNaughton, Aubrey Austin and Gretchen Leyendecker. A special thanks to Grinch from Mayo supporters, (especially in the win over AHA at state last year!)

Mayo is the best team that could have come out of 1AA. Lakeville South had little to no chance at keeping up with them. Mayo will give Roseville a game but Roseville is very strong and should win. Next year both Lakeville North and South should be much better and one of them should take the 1AA crown because Mayo is loosing to much talent.

Don't count out Owatonna. They have a very strong goalie for next 4 years, and I believe they have a strong young first line moving up.

Mayo is 3-7 vs teams from north of Lakeville.

I won't disagree that this is the weakest section, but Mayo did not schedule a cupcake schedule against metro teams - Blake, Hopkins, North Metro, Centenial were on the schedule.

Mayo's worst loss of the season was to Edina, game 2, by 3 goals. They have beaten or been competitive with everyone else on their schedule including strong metro teams. In a single elimination tourney played with an object that doesn't bounce true, they could upset.

If you are going to compare goalies, South's goalies (either the 8th grader or the 9th grader) is MUCH MUCH better than Owatonna's.

You're absolutely right SE. The criticism I'd heard about southern teams is that they only play each other so it's tough to tell how good any one of them really is compared to any of the better metro or northern teams. So I checked it out and here's the breakdown:
Mankato East had zero games against metro area or northern teams.
Albert Lea played one metro team--lost 5-2 to Blaine.
Century lost badly to 2 northern teams--Babbitt/Embarrass and IFalls.
Mankato West lost badly to SSP and Forest Lake.
Austin beat the StCloud Icebreakers and Sartell and got beat by Blaine.
Faribault lost badly to Alex and Anoka.
Owatonna lost badly to Blake and Maple Grove.
Winona beat Totino Grace.
RJM lost to IFalls and tied Babbitt/Embarass.

The point is that Mayo is the only one who played a schedule with more than one or two teams outside their comfort zone. I realize it's nobody's fault--scheduling teams is tricky and most metro teams don't want to travel out of town, etc. But at least Mayo tried, and they played several of the best teams in the state, including Edina (LPH's #2 at the end of the reg. season), section finalists Centennial and Mahtomedi, and state tourney bound teams Blake, Bemidji, and N. Metro Stars. And what I didn't mention was that Mayo didn't lose a game south of Hopkins. :) I'm kind of excited to see them play to see what the best of the south looks like.
