Ram's Goalie Situation

Post by gatzke »

Roseau's got three great goalies this year:

Bjerk (11-2) (1.75 GAA)(91%)(2 SO) was the Rams main guy since he was a sophmore. He had one bad lapse against Moorhead, otherwise has played a very solid year against some great competition.

Biermaier (3-0) (.88 GAA)(93%)(2 SO) is another great goalie who has been in Bjerk's shadow, not getting much of an oppertunity to show his stuff. Played mostly weaker teams, but only let in two in relief against Moorhead.

Lee (6-0) (.80 GAA)(96%)(4 SO) is the sophmore who has shown that he can get it done. Statistically the best goalie on the team, and in the running for the best in state. Played some weaker teams, and a few tougher games.

All of the Goalies have played very well, who is Ollie going to go with in two weeks? Any thoughts?

I would say that he should go with Bjerk. He's been their guy for three years now and it's his senior year. Even though he may not be the best goalie on the team statistically, you've got to play your main guy during the playoff run.

I think saying they have three great goalies is a bit of a stretch. If it were me I would go with the Bjerk. Lee has done well as a sophomore however you have to stick with your senior who has the numbers. There is no greater experience then playing in the state tournement.

How many teams would love to be in this conundrum?

My guess is they rotate Lee and Bjerk.....I think either one has the capability of getting the job done, regardless of age/class.

i would agree, but you wanna keep with one guy in the playoffs. the goalie needs to get into a rythem, i say whoever plays against rapids the last game is gonna start through playoffs.

team unity

Post by hipcheck »

For some odd reason, high school players play better (more comfotable ) in front of a certain goalie. Team chemistry during the playoffs is important.

Roseau has a great choice between Bjerk and Lee. Do you go with a seasoned vet that has gone through the trenches and won the big games, or an unproven hotshot.(yeah, he was solid in Bantams)

Which one will the team feel more confident with going down the stretch?

The job has been Bjerks form the beginning of the season. My 2 cents is he has not lost that position.

Three good goalies on one team? Doesn't Marvin Windows have a job opportunity for one of those goalie's parents?

Having typed that, didn't Warroad have a goalie transfer from Roseau?

Incredible goalie development..........what a conundrum for the coaching staff.

You are right. To start the season Roseau had FOUR excellent goalies. Vatsndahl got cut and went to Warroad, and I believe the community understands why he went there. He is a great goalie who was placed in a terrible situation.

Yeah, that would be a tough spot to be in. It is pretty evident that he could turn to the dark side just because he still wanted to play hockey. That kid has balls

Tough spot as coach

Post by iwatchalotofhockey »

Well Oliver sounds like he is darned if he does and darned if he dont!

With the tender situation in Roseau it is a very perculiar situation. From the stats and and an outsider looking in but also having a bit of knowledge from past experience here is how I see it IMO.

Biermaier kid is not gonna be the guy given his limited playing time so he would be odd man out. You just have to play in tight situations and be game ready for a one game and out situation. So that rule shim out. But if they did make state he shoud see some action as a guy who has paid his dues over his time thru the Roseau system. Just depends upon how they do I.E. lost first round game or in a game where they were out of contention. So kinda mop up role. If they make it of course.

Bjerk well he has been there since Sophomore season and he can play but is may be susceptable to an off game as are many goalies or a weak goal. But he is a senior and has also paid his dues and did take them to state last year and probably knows full well that he wants to redeem himself from their tourney performance last year. That is a very big factor in my opinion to prove to himself that he was and is better than their outcome last year.

Lee kid is the goalie of future we all know that based upon his play over his youth playing days. We know what he can do. But that also being said he would be a guy who could be road through the playoffs as well. Nothing is lost IMO by playing him or Bjerk.

What we dont know is the hidden aspect of the goalie situation. What I mean by that is the guys on the ice in front of their tender. I nor anyone else can truly determine that on this board. What I mean by that is in any team situation there is always going to be more of a comfort level with a tender by his teammates. Will they take a chance knowing full well that the guy behind can make up for their mistake or will they be more tenative? Or will they have to be more defensive and have in the back of their minds thinking we cant make a mistake. I.E. look at the NJ Devils and we all know that they have Brodeur back there.

So like I said a darned if you do darned if you dont situation. tough to predict from a coach's standpoint. Either way you look at it there will be some coffee cup clutchers sitting up stairs there in the rink that will always be second guessing. There always will be its just how hockey is in certain programs.

Bottom line is if the Roseau team can play like I have seem them at times when they are hitting on all cylinders I would not be concerned about who is back there! A goalie cannot score for his team but bad goaltending definately can take you out of a game and now is not the time to have a bad game or sub par game no matter who plays for them.

So whoever is the man come playoff time. Good luck to him and the rest of the Rams lets hope we see you down here come March!!!

I think they'll go with Bjerk and stick with him throughout. He's been their guy. Although that sophs stats are real good. i don't think you wanna rotate or share time in the playoffs

I agree they should stick with Bjerk and not start rotating during tournaments. Also I've heard the players want Bjerk in the net. However, I have a feeling Oliver will either rotate or just go with Lee. He seems to like to use younger players whenever he can, probably building to his son's senior year.

The only way they'll get to state this year, is if they play all three of

them in the net at the same time against the SPImage DS!

See what happens when yImage u try and help out? [-X

YImageu're just going to need to try somethin' different!

Put all three in the net and then run at 2 forwards and a D allowing for an occassional goalie peeling out with the puck every once in a while and rotate

six very fast changing lines, changing say, 1 guy ever 55 seconds or so!

Lay the skinniest goalie across the width of the net and let the heavier guys cover the rest!

That would give yImage u 2 additional guys that the SPImageDS would not be allowed to check!

How they gonna defend against that? =P~

The two standing goalies would be in a superior position to kick out rebounds to their suckhole like an NFL field goal man!

YImage u got any better idea's?

YImage u guys are lookin' at MImageImageRHEAD!

This is the only way yImage u're gonna beat 'em! =P~
