Austin

Faribault 6, Austin 4

Austin's playing a little better lately. Got the early lead on Faribault but couldn't hold it.

Cut through the skate

Post by goaler »

I don't think I've heard of someone getting cut through their skate before. I thought it was impossible to get a blade through that material. But I guess sometimes weird things happen around those skate blades.

Austin is playing better. NU beat them 5-1 but Austin played them better than that 5-1 score. They might be a team to upset someone in sections.

It seems like Albert lea is playing better hockey than early in the season. I think they will give Century a run for their money on tuesday but if they get as many penalties as usual they will not win.

Lately AL has been playing disciplined hockey not many penalties... AL vs. Century will be a great game if AL can keep it up and play solid hockey like they have been.

AL played well but Mayo is its own worst enemy....the Spartans had 4-5 breakaways and could not score on any of them. But hats off to Casanova for stopping Thauwald on one w/ a sweet glove save....the next time Thauwald got one he fumbled the puck away and did not even get a shot off.

The Spartans feel asleep after the first period...they are on complete Jekyl and Hyde mode right now...sometimes they look really good, sometimes terrible. It is hard to win games when your better plays play poorly - which is what happened with Anderson, Sackett, Thauwald, and Hurley last night.

The Tigers have some really nice forwards and a few good defense as well. They might be the team to beat the Panthers in the Big Nine - not to win the conference, but at least give Century a blemish on its record.

Hegwood turned his back at the last second and Freedli hammered him. I don't understand how that was not at least 2 minutes for boarding, but the again the refs left something to be desired.

JACKSTRAW and GRAFMASTER. You said that " Albert Lea played impressive with there second line out. You need to compare apples to apples. How many players were out for mayo? Yes ,any time you can beat a rochester team is good. Albert lea is playing good now that they are staying out of the penalty box. We all know that the rochester teams are down this year. Jm has been weak for many years, mayo is ok but was a one man team last year with canzanello, and century has scoring power but lost there HOT GOALIE Alex Kangas a few years ago.

I have a funny story to tell you about albert lea and century about 3 years ago. I was talking to albert lea head coach nystrom after the first game and century won by about 8 goals and I asked him what happened and he said that his best player jonny bruer was out because he had 5 penalies from the game before and thats why they did'nt do very good. So when they played century again they got beat by about 5 goals and I asked the coach if his best player had played and he said yes, but his excuse this time was century had a HOT GOALIE.

Actually those 2 games a few years ago between century and AL... the first 7-1 and the second 7-4.. yes Kangas is a great goalie but to put up 4 on him thats pretty darn good.

GRIZWALD. To beat Kangas would be even more IMPRESSIVE than to just score 4 goals on him and still lose the game.

I think the only chances of Century losing in the Big nine are tomorrow night when they host Faribault, or tuesday against AL. If they lose both then Faribault still has a chance to win the conference. Because they swept the tigers. :)

Alex Carlson

Post by Puckhandler »

Where is Alex Carlson playing right now?

And what offers does he have from Division 1 schools.

Until those questions are answered, nothing that ZAMBONI says holds any water.

swats10. They are playing in Alexandria, minnesota. Ellingson was in Montana last year and the team folded so he quit hockey, thats what his friends told me.

NU 4 Winona 0 NU outshot Winona 24-4 in the first and then took like 10 straight penalties. NU is not disapline at all. I think they took 14 or 15 to Winona's 5 last night. Ref's also might have it out for them. I hear both refs were from Kato and both hate NU. Still took way too many.

West defeats Winona 13-2. Score could have been MUCH worse if West hadn't sat their 1st & 2nd lines!

if i recall on the second game century vs AL the shots were in AL favor Shots on Goal
Century: 10-8-7—25
Albert Lea: 6-17-17—40
and alex kangas is a dam(dam=waterfall) good goalie and is supposed to be going to the gophers next season so i would hope he comes ready to play in that huge big nine game so just shut your mouth and o ya why did you just bring that story up and o ya you tell us how many kids mayo was missing? 0-1 probably AL-4 missing players

Good start on the predictions but Marshall should be 3 since they beat New Ulm. East should be last since they won't bear anyone from here on out. Marshall, West and Albert Lea all play each other yet so the last two weeks will determine the order of the top three.

From Pagestat2 for games through 1/20:

60 ALBERT LEA 1A 11 5 0 74 30 17.67
61 MANKATO WEST 1A 11 5 1 87 48 17.52
104 NEW ULM 1A 7 6 2 47 40 14.57
110 MARSHALL_ 1A 12 5 0 77 38 14.18
132 AUSTIN 1A 5 13 0 56 110 11.75
134 WASECA 1A 6 9 0 67 78 11.65
140 MANKATO EAST 1A 4 14 0 49 121 10.80
142 LUVERNE 1A 5 9 0 57 81 10.38
143 WINDOM 1A 5 10 0 34 53 10.34
149 REDWOOD VALLEY 1A 2 12 0 33 86 8.49
152 FAIRMONT 1A 2 11 0 41 97 6.52
153 SLEEPY EYE 1A 1 9 0 12 68 5.80

New rankings will be out today, they'll probably be the same.

Seedings

Post by goaler »

If I were seeding:

1. Albert Lea
2. New Ulm
3. Mankato West
4. Marshall
5. Austin
6. Waseca

Barring an upset in sections, Albert Lea will make another trip to state. I don't think they'll get blown out up there, but I think they'll have their hands full winning any games.

I think Marshall and New Ulm are very closely matched. But goalie Adam Buegler gives New Ulm a big edge in the nets. Mankato West lacks discipline. They can score, but I don't thnk their defense is state-tournament quality.

Any of the top four could probably win it, but if I had money on it I'd go with Albert Lea. They are the most solid, with good goaltending, improving defense and excellent forwards. They have experience on the ice and behind the bench.

Too early for seedings; The NU/Marshall thing should take care of itself in a few weeks. Marshall did beat NU in OT early. If NU takes penalties like they did to let Marshall win the first one the outcome will be the same. The thing that hurts Marshall is SOS. NU's 3 of 6 losses have come against teams ranked top 15 in 1a. A close one with AL, a OT loss to Marshall and Robbinsdale Cooper.

Here is how they look today. Marshall will control their own destiny from 1 to 4 playing their next three games against the other top 4. Albert Lea and West wins over Marshall will keep them 1 and 2. New Ulm win over Marshall still puts them at 3.

1. Albert Lea
2. Mankato West
3. Marshall
4. New Ulm
5. Waseca
6. Austin
7. Luverne
8. Windom
9. Mankato East
10. Redwood Valley
11. Fairmont
12. Sleepy Eye

Seedings

Post by swats10 »

1. AL, If they keep playing at their recent level of hockey everyone matched with them will have their hands full, two solid tenders
2. West, Good offfensive power in their first 2 lines, Inconsistent D, very undisciplined and hot-headed, expierienced goaltending
3. Marshall, well-rounded team, has a chance to take it all if they show up to play
4. NU, A flashy look good team (in warm-ups) but when it comes down to games, seems they can't piece it together consistently, D are shaky, good goaltending
5. Austin, inconsistent, injury plagued, no depth at D, first 2 lines can make it happen once in a while, underrated goaltending, could cause some upsets
6. Waseca, Good first line, not enough depth to take them far, and bad goaltending
7. East, No skill but are hard workers, if they want to advance will have to hope their oppenent comes out flat

AL in my opinion is the favorite, but don't count of West or Marshall either, will need there goalie to be red hot to get the bid to the Xcel
