With who the Lightning are returning, I can't see them not taking the section this year. Cloquet lost a big person in Maunu-Vichorek is good but I'm not sure if she can take over, those are some big skates to fill. The Erickson, Arola, Newton line will be unstoppable. Not to mention some of the best defense I've seen in a while.

GYB-

The "D" will most certainly struggle. With Dekich done for the year that puts them to four experienced "D" Three of those could easily be forwards. Horgen is a forward playing defense. Clafton and Rothstein were both worthy candidates to play forward this year. Hull remains, but I think you are over rating this defensive core. In my mind they have A LOT to prove and I believe that Mr. Pat Rendle agrees with me on that one.

Okay, I had forgotten about the Dekich situation. A low blow for the Lightning. However, the offensive threat from the D will probably come in handy. Who doesn't like a dangling D man every once and a while, after all. The D will have to be strong in the defensive zone as well, seeing as they'll struggle in the nets. As long as the 4 of them are well conditioned, I don't see this being a big problem. Granted that's if they can all stay healthy.

They will be ok....just can't have a mid-season let down. I agree goaltending and how the D corp plays is the key. Scoring will be no problem.

Wow, you guys are just STUCK on the fact rapids/greenway is going all the way. You have to take other teams into consideration. How about the duluth teams combining? You have your goaltending from central combining with more upfront play from east. I mean I'm not saying anything as far as who's going to be the best, and who's going to take it all. But really. And as far as i know Cloquet is still top 5 in the state. Yeah, they lost Maunu but i think you're underestimating vichorek, she's been to placid the last 2 years!! And do I need to go over goaltending. Paige Thunder has made quite the name for herself and will probably be improved from last year. Lundquist is also making quite the name for herself as well and there are numerous juniors this year who are getting there names out. But i will agree Rapids does have some good offense coming up with Ericksons line.

if you weren't stuck on reading one thread...You would realize that each point you made has been made by yours truely...Sadie Lundquist is one of the top scoring threats in the state, no doubt. But the Lightning can answer with the Erickson-Newton-Arola line. Vichorek is tough, no doubt, but Manau is gone, no doubt there either. The lightning may have enough team speed to dispose of Vichorek, again, we'll have to wait and see. Paige Thunder is my pick for Ms. Goalie (again, if you would only read). Cloquet is a top 7 team, NO QUESTION. But that is all preseason, and EVERYTHING can change. And the reason we are talking about GR/G is because we know them. It only makes since to talk about what you know best.

C-E-C v. GRG

Post by SEhockeyDAD »

This is a really good rivalry, offense vs. defense. I've cast my vote for C-E-C, and my reasoning is based on...well, something I can't put my finger on.

There are 2 teams I've seen in the last couple of years which I can't explain (being a hockey dad, not an expert on the game); C-E-C and Coon Rapids. It's undoubtedly due to my inability to recognize great team defense, but when I first watched these teams, I thought they were good, but I wasn't blown away. Yet both eventually went to state championship games. These teams didn't really blow out many other teams, they didn't look like juggernauts, but they almost always won.

GRG has some great offense, no question, but every team with lots of offense looks benign when they play C-E-C or Coon Rapids (EP excluded.) I'm pretty sure it probably wasn't just Maunu keeping other teams at bay last year, so I'm inclined to think that they won't be a drasticallly different team. Teams like GRG can make it a game, but there's something about C-E-C.

I agree with Robert, GRG beat them in their building, has a better section record with the first Duluth game being the swing game, Cloquet plays Duluth tonight, I think even Cloquet would agree with GRG as One

I realize it won't happen since the 4 northern teams (coaches voting, right?) will stick together, but I'd argue Forest Lake should be the #1 seed--and you guys seem to have dismissed them entirely.
1) They've survived with a good record (15-6-2) in arguably the toughest conference in the state, including 1-0-1 vs both Stillwater and Hastings, two potential state tourney teams.
2) They've played 4 teams from section 7AA and are 4-0 vs them.
To show how goofy the results of this thread poll are, FL and Duluth have the same amount of votes, and as far as I can tell, Duluth doesn't have one quality win against a AA opponent for the entire season, AND they've lost 4 games to class A teams.

boblee thinks it ends up as follows:

1. GRG
2. CEC
3. FLake
4. Duluth
5. PHM

Makes for a very interesting semi... CEC and FLake.

Forest lake will win. they have beat all the section teams they have faced this season and have played some tough games this season against stillwater and hastings (won and tied both teams). this is forest lake's year and they will win the section 7aa team.

They played one team out of the top 4 other than themselves (PHM, Duluth, GRG, CEC) and They beat Duluth by one or two...the validity of your statement is in question.

I still say forest lake will win the section because they are a tough team and i think they will face cloquet for the final

I don't think it will be allowed to happen that way...

I think seedings will make them play in a semi...

1. GRG
2. CEC
3. FL
4. Duluth
