jenkins and faber are key players, but heimsness isn't much of a threat. there's a hole in the line. the game's up in the air in my opinion. it'll be an interesting game, that's for sure.

Austin 5
AL 2

Fantastic game, much closer than the score would indicate. Controversial and strange goals.
The way I see it...
1. The first half of period 1 will determine the outcome.
AL needs to keep the pressure on the Austin attack and limited their time and space.
Too much time and/or space = Too much Jenkins, Faber, Heimsness

2. The team that scores first will win.
A close game favors AL, they'll start to believe they can win if they get a lead and/or keep it close.

3. Match-ups
AL's line of Walton, Klick and Gackstetter need to be physical and aggressive.

4. Special teams
Austin's PP unit is TOO good to give many opportunities. AL's Jensen and Passingham have to stay OUT of the box.
1. I thought AL did a nice time of taking away the time and space of the Austin players, the whole team worked hard. Trouble is, Faber and Jenkins are on the ice 70% of the time.

2. Ok, I missed that one. AL got out to a 1-0 lead dispite being outshot 21-2 in the 1st. Kelli Hanson for AL was outstanding.

3. I'd have to say AL won the match-up holding Jenkins and Faber to 1 point each. If you would have told me before the game that Jenkins and Faber will have a goal each as their only points, I would have liked AL's chances...or did Austin win the battle since neither 5 nor 12 got a point for AL?

4. AL stayed out of the box collecting only 1 penalty to Austin's 3. Neither 6 nor 12 made the trip. Nice job girls.

5. Austin is the better team, but AL gave them everything they wanted tonight. Austin had to earn that win.

The game was intense and exciting the whole time, with the teams being tied 1-1 after 2. and the score doesn't tell you anything about what happened. later in the 3rd it was tied 2-2. Austin broke it open with 2 goals and added an open-netter.

It was the roughest game i have seen all year, with the refs not calling barely ANYTHING.. but inconsistency is nothing new with them.

Only about 3 goals in the game weren't controversial
Their were goals scored after the whistle that counted, austin scored on themselves, their was also a goal that was offsides.

But overall an excellent game for both teams

WOW! What a game.
Very inconsistent with the whistles. At least they let them play. The 3rd goal was clearly offsides for Austin. I think everyone in the rink knew it except for the one ref.
AL played hard. Austin is a great team. I think they need to find a 3rd line. Jenkins and Faber can't do it all.

in case you didn't notice, golfreak, faber and jenkins DIDNT do it all. remember, they were both held to one point? the whole team fought hard, and i'm sick of heimsness not getting any credit. the whole line does the work, and they all create opportunities for each other. that 3rd goal was called right. there was no offsides. the puck was passed right on the blue line and faber had one leg behind her.
i do agree that the refs were inconsistent, for BOTH teams. the two goals that were called off, well...the first one i can see how it could go either way. the puck was in the goalies glove, but whether it was behind the line or not is debatable. the second one should have counted for sure, because the net wasn't knocked off until after the puck went in. that was a clean goal.

austin scared me for a while there though. they couldn't finish anything, and they scrambled around in the defensive zone like they'd never even played hockey before. i'm glad they picked it up at the end.

overall, it was a fun game. very fun, and very exciting. the game embodied the rivalry between AL and Austin. It's a great rivalry, and I hope we can look forward to more games like this in the future (and yes, i would still say that if austin had lost.)

peto,
i just suggested that Austin find a third line. It's just that coach Bray only runs 2 lines. Thy might want to look into finding a line that can at least take a couple shifts at the beginning of the third.
I can't believe how you say that was onsides. I looked at it on tape. She beat the puck by 2 steps. The ref was way out of position.

Remaining schedules listing Section 1A and common opponents.

WEST 9-8
@ Mayo 1/13
Faribault 1/16
Owatonna 1/18
@ AL 1/30
Winona 1/27

FARIBO 11-3
Mayo 1/11
@ Winona 1/13
@ West 1/16
@ AL 1/18
@ NU 1/23
@ Austin 1/25
@ Mayo 2/1

ALBERT LEA 9-7-1
Faribault 1/18
Owatonna 1/23
Mayo 1/25
West 1/30
@ Winona 2/1

AUSTIN 14-2
Winona 1/16
Faribault 1/25
@ Owatonna 1/30
@ Mayo 2/3

Just given the remaining schedules, it appears Austin has just about sealed up the #1 seed with only 1 remaining Section 1A contender.

Things look pretty wide open between AL, Faribo and West for the other seeds. West beat AL, AL tied Faribo, Faribo beat West. The leader at this point has to be Faribo followed by West and then AL. But Faribo has a tough schedule ahead with 3 road game against Section opponents.

Predictions, how will it end?

I have been gone for awhile. I am back. Sounds like that Austin and albert lea game was good.
Is the controversial goal the one Faber scores? That was on KIMT. I slowed it down. I think Albert lea needs to review offsides rules. The refs made the right call. The puck crossed the blue line before Fabers left foot left the blue line. Heimsness does fumble the puck and make it interesting though.
I heard that Ausin had two clear goals waved off. If the goalie catches the puck past the goal line it is a goal. I know my friend in Austin can not stand refs that can't keep up with the play. It sounds like that was the case in Albert Lea.
Faribault will beat Albert Lea. Why? Because the 2-2 tie was a fluke.
Prediction Faribault 7
Albert Lea 2

Correction Faribault 4
Albert Lea 2

We will have 3 legitimate goals waved off in Albert Lea.

Section 1A will be:

1. Austin
2. Faribault
3. Albert Lea
4. Mankato West
5. Northfield
6. Mankato East
7. Waseca

Even if Faber was offsides...which i don't entirely believe she was... it was probably the refs making up for all of there terrible calling
it was both ways but you have to wonder when 2 goals are called off and AL only recieved one penalty in such a chippy game

i personally think Austin had a very off night- Snyder had two shots in the first and let one in..the other AL goal was scored by an Austin defenseman...Hanson played a very good game and is the ONLY reason the score was so close

and petom, maybe if heimsness would get it together for a game she wouldn't be considered a "hole in the line"

Falcon my friend, Those Albert Lea refs learned the" home ice wave off goal rule" in Faribault. LOL

It was a great game for the fans and fun to watch. A great bunch of kids.

good call jetjock,
It appeaes Faribo has a tough schedule. lt will come down to AL, Faribo, and Wests meetings against each other. Austin is a great team and deserve the #1 seed. No question.

Looking at the schedules: AL, Mankato W, and Faribault all control their own destiny, for seeding in the section.

Exactly.

To me, the team with the most on the line is Faribault. If Faribault loses to West and AL they could drop from a 2 all the way to a 4. Plus Faribault has that pesky game @ New Ulm, which could factor in as a common opponent game. The team with the most to gain is AL. Right now AL is a 4, but if AL can knock off West and Faribo they could jump up from a 4 to a 2.

golfreak, you have a point. austin's always had a weak third line; it would be a nice change if they could find one.

good one falcon :) it's best to go into it with a sense of humor. it got pretty tense there for a while though. fans and players were pretty steamed on both sides. i'm surprised the fight between faber and #13 from AL didn't go further.

Heimsness makes mistakes, but so does everyone else. jenkins had a couple empty-netters she missed.

I think Albert Lea is a better team than West. Having seen both teams play, Albert Lea should be able to beat West, even if they lost to them once before. my guess is austin, faribault, AL, and then west. but yeah, it'll be close.

UPCOMING GAMES

1/12
AL @ East

1/13
Faribo @ Winona
West @ Mayo

1/16
Faribo @ West
Winona @ Austin

1/18
Faribo @ AL
Austin @ East
Owatonna @ West

1/20
JM @ AL
New Prague @ Faribo

Any thoughts? Tough week for West with what should be some good competitve games for them, but not as tough as it will be for Faribo. Faribo has some tough games AND a lot of bus rides.

I think Faribo might have some issues with scrappy and very well coached Winona team. They have a tough schedule the rest of the way. The Faribo/AL game will be huge come seeding time with them tying at Faribo.

Other than all the travel, my guess is most coaches would prefer to have a schedule like that each week. I would think a team like Faribault, that aspires to be Section Champions, is looking forward to that stretch. They know it will be tough.

You of little faith. We want the tough schedule to send a message to the rest of the section and be ready. FARIBAULT WILL WIN. Who would AL rather play first, Faribault or Austin? If it is us, it will be a short new season for AL.

Isn't that pretty much what I said in the post right before yours?

Albert Lea must win at least 4 of the last 7 games, and that might be tough. It seems they have 2 teams, and don't know which team will show up. LOL

Its likely to be Faribault first, then Austin only if they win.

falcons,
If AL gets Austin that would mean AL probably got the #4 seed. Personally I think it's unlikely, but not completely out of the question, that AL will be the #4. Near as I can tell with 7 games to play, an AL and Faribo matchup is fairly likely at GAC.

First things first though falcons, AL needs to beat West in order to get the #3 away from them. Then you need to be beat AL to keep the #2.

Take care of the business at hand before you look ahead to the 18th, you have a tough game Monday against Mayo and then you have to go to West for a pretty important Section game.

What number are you, I'll make sure to say hi...
