Puckhead, you're right about who's to blame, but I just wonder if the ref could have handled it differently and given Hess a stiff warning instead, especially in knowing that this was a big game with some build-up and the kids were emotional. He sure had the power to settle the goalie down. Refs don't like to be the difference maker, but in this case the ref sure was with how he handled the situation. But, alas, this was probably the best lesson the goalie will learn this year and hopefully it makes him a better goalie. The incident and penalty were even reported in the Duluth newspaper.
You mention that DM is more skilled in all areas of the game at this point. However, they don't like the physical game and that may be exactly what their going to get from SCC. So, it'll be interesting. SCC D and goaltending will need to be huge. They'll have to minimize their turnovers. With big D and a physical game, I give the edge to SCC.

I have to take exception to the statement that the refs favor SCC at the MAC. SCC is one of the few teams that will regularly get "homered" at home. I've seen it for many years... All the guys around the St. Cloud area think that hockey revolves around Tech and then Apollo.
As far as the Denfeld game and "the penalty"... the ref decided the game with that call, and he should be not allowed to ref again. It was a blatant effort to be the center of the game. DD should be embarrased to have even played that game after that. (but they're not because they're the Hunters, and that means something to someone...)
Saturday's game:
SCC 3
DM 1
Flahrety will blow a gasket because his boys will be getting their butts kicked and he won't like it one bit. The downside to this is DM won't lose to SCC twice this year..

Bluegoose, I think many hockey fans don't realize the limits the refs are taken to on the ice with players. I believe this ref had enough with Hess' complaining and whining and when Hess took it to the next level, yep, the official gave him a major to teach a lesson....and not just to Hess but to the Crusaders as a whole. When a ref penalizes a goalie with a major requiring him to be removed from the game to serve, it isn't because he wanted to change the outcome of the game.....it is because he had seen and heard enough. None of us know if any or how many "warnings" Hess or any of team may have gotten that day before the official called the major. We can debate this to death, but that's how I see it.
Scottparker, maybe in your day on the ice the Mac refs favored Apollo and Tech, but not today. I think DM will be seeing some tilted calls today. I still remember the section 2A playoff game when Princeton agreed to play the championship game at the Mac against Cathedral rather than going up north. Princeton, who frankly I have never enjoyed watching, did end up winning, but they won in spite of the officiating. (Then again, why would you agree to play at a team's home ice in a section playoff game?)
Anyway, DM and Cathedral will be a good game. I take DM to win it and the 2A title at this point.

For the first part, I'll say that "the penalty" happened in the first five minutes of the game. If Hess really had the ref that upset by that point, it must have been a little wild. You're a little lost with that analysis, Puckhead.Puckhead00 wrote:Bluegoose, I think many hockey fans don't realize the limits the refs are taken to on the ice with players. As for the second part, What are you talking about? Sure, it's really not as bad now as it was then, but it still happens on a regular basis (SCC getting screwed on home ice). As for the P-town/SCC game 10 years ago, what are you talking about? Pretty sure I would have recalled poor officiating in that game. Pretty sure it was a fine job done by the refs. The only thing I can recall is that Princeton's goalie continuously kicked the net off the pegs when he was under pressure. Come to think of it, I don't even think that was even that game.
You're lost, PuckHead. You judge SCC solely on their games against Sartell...and that's awful judgement. Awful, considering the reason Sartell players get hurt against SCC is because they are too small and too slow.

It's more than obvious that people are upset about the whole outcome between DD and SCC. Don't worry, they'll likely get another shot come playoff time.
Now, with that said, the DD vs SCC game is completely erroneous to the DM vs SCC game. DD and DM have not played, so there is no comparing or contrasting to be done here. The game is also in St. Cloud so Duluth refs won't be an issue, lets stay on topic here.
Both DM and SCC have speed and great defense, although I think that DM's offense is just too good to be shut down which is why I pick them to win this hockey game. DM has also seen better competition this year and therefore have been tested to the fullest which I'm not sure SCC has. Hess will likely see as many as 50 shots and I don't think SCC will put up more than 20-25 shots against DM.
I don't think this one is on the radio up here, so keep us all updated!

A couple of things:
DM has nothing to worry about in regard to the officiating for this game. As has been mentioned, and which I entirely agree with, SCC DOES get homered against at home by many refs who do seem to have an allegiance to Tech or Apollo for some reason.
The goalie penalty did happen in the early minutes of the DD game proving that the ref decided to become the big shot of the game right away and essentially handed DD a gift on a silver platter. There was not any time for the goalie or the team to do any chirping or ruffle this ref's feathers in any way. He certainly was not forced to make this call, at least that early in the game.
Lastly, I have seen DM play several times, and while they may have a few players who don't mind using their body, this is mostly a skating team with exceptional speed. It's hard to compare the DM team this year to last year, but my impression is that this is not as potent of a team as last year. We'll see though.

Thanks for the insight BlueGoose and fkahckyprofessor20...some people actually talking about the game and not rambling about the 2003 section final.
I don't think Hess will see 50 shots. This game will be a close one i think as far as goals and shots. DM just plays a lot better competition and they are probably more ready to play against a top end team than Cathedral. That will probably be the deciding factor.

just two good examples, DM is a physical team, they just dont always need to be with their speed.
