Hey, how 'bout doze Gophers
Moderators: Mitch Hawker, east hockey, karl(east)
I just got a chance to read Souhans column in the Red Star.
He makes the point that the U has a chance to really put itself in the fore front for the first time on a long time if it makes the right moves.
He thinks the Vikimgs are floundering and that nothing about that is going to chnge real soon leaving the Gophers with a chance to regain lost fans.
I agree with the part about the Vikings but he may be overstating the oportunity a bit.
Will our beloved Purple ever be abandoned by the faithfull for the perky Rodent?

"turning a profit"?
The phrase "turning a profit" should never be said in the same breath as anything to do with education, especially the facilities. A stadium has a slight user fee (tickets sales), which helps us out, but we pay for it. We fund education, period. Education is the single largest State Budget item, I believe. It's not only for books in the elementary schools.
Rationalize all the reasons for the stadium to make you feel better, but lets be honest,....the best reason to build a football stadium is because "we deserve it",......only because it sounds better than,.....because "we want it".
IS, the right coach may get all 4 of us football stars,......or not.
PB, they may be able to "recoup the principal" sooner on the Law school and the Coffman Union, with tickets sales.
Build it,....."we deserve it".

I read that Souhan column too. He made some solid points, and rightfully noted the poor decision making by the Vikings brass. If the Gophs do things the right way with the whole stadium/coach issues and the Vikes continue to make personnel blunders and have a coach with such a vacant personality, I think they can close the gap. I don't know if they can ever surpass the purple, but with success and a newfound commitment to the program, I think they can be close to on par.

Thanks PB.
As you probably guessed, my choice for Head Coach is Tice. I just think it would be just a good fit. He's well connected to the local coaches and players from his football camp, he has Head Coaching experience, NFL playing experience, he might not answer the phone, he's likeable, he's enthusiastic. There's a certain doofy charm to the guy, BUT since he doesn't have his degree he won't get consideration. It's really too bad, he's a great fit.

Minor details.
How about if a "tutor" helps Mike with a few school papers, to "help" him attain his Degree.
And with Mike Tice's experience, he would know better than to take recruits to the strip club,.....just rent a boat.

I dont think so.
The media likes him which is a plus but he realy didnt impress me.
He looked like he was in over his head. His team looked poorly coached.
Plus he left here on a bad note.
If we want to go "back" to someone who was here but in a different role, then go Denny Green. At least he had some success.
But I say forget Green, forget Tice. Start new. Get a guy who is on the way up and fresh.

It's a matter of perception, Tice is/was perceived the out of control goofy doofus while Chilly is perceived as the boss and in control.
Perception says Tice's teams were ripe with discipline issues, turnovers, penalties and a general sense of ineptitude.
Perception says that Chilly's team was disciplined, efficient and downright professional.
The argument could be made that Chilly's team had as many, if not more, issues with discipline, turnovers, penalties and a general sense of ineptitude as Tice.
Perception is like The Force, in the wrong hands its dangerous....

Agreed RSI, but the way people percieve you is for the most part controllable.
In addition, I think peole are sharp enough to look past the surface when a guy has been around awhile. Tice did not look nor act like he had it down and a lot of his onfield decisions bore that out. His team looked poorly coached
As far as Chilly goes, he isnt the standard by which I judge Tice. He has a different surface to be sure but we look past that too. His team also looks poorly coached.

From Pioneer Press...
Nice to see Tony Dungy getting so many votes, unfortuantely that will never happen. Who is Lane Kiffin? Monte's kid?Who should be the Gophers football coach?

It makes sense. Decent resume and local roots.
Hasnt been fired yet.
BUT, remember some of the comments we made about whether the UofM was commited and able to do what it takes.
I dont know if the buyout situation with Mason and Monson didnt financialy affect the decision on who to go after (no big name).
