NEW Hockey Rules
Have the new rules gone to far? I just got off the phone with a friend from White Bear where they had there District 2 meeting last night. The head Referee was telling everyone that he did a A Bantam game the othe day and that he called 51 total penaltieis and that he should have called more.
Common sense tells me that with in two years Minnesota hockey is going to take the game we have always loved and turn it into sort of a ringette format. A couple of years ago I heard on the radio garage logic that Johnson was hosting a Friendship tournament anthat the winner of the tournament was the team with the least penalties. Is this where we are headed? Just a few thoughts! Is this another way of making the bigger associations with better players leave the small associations in the dust. All this is going to create is an atmosphere where the strong teams and areas are going to smoke less talented areas. What does Hill-Murray practice every day? The POWER PLAY. The good players are going to be on the ice every power play. Not so talented SIT DOWN!!!!!!!

I believe the hooking and holding needs to be cleaned up. This same process took place in the WCHA a few years ago, and now in the NHL this past season. Is it too much all at one time for the youth and high school levels? I do not think we will know that answer until the season is completed. I am sure there will be a lot of complaining way before the end of the season, but I don't think anything will change, at least during the season.
I have had the chance to work with this during the Fall Elite II league first hand and have talked extensivley with my players and also with many officials around the state. I know the officials are having a tough time with it more than you think. The problem is they take all the blame when they are just doing what they have been instructed to do, which is what needs to be understood by the players and parents. In the league 15 team penalities and the head coach has to sit a game. So far probably each team has run into this at least twice, and some have reached 15 more times. The players do not like it, but they are slowly beginning to adjust. The bottom line is keep your feet moving, and keep your stick down and off the body of the opponent. I have not seen too many teams with more than 20 penalities in the games I have been involved in to this point. I am sure many calls have not been made as the officials are also still adjusting.
Some of the interference calls are a little crazy and are hard to adjust to. I think it can be more of a matter of the lesser skilled teams having problems against the higher skilled teams. Not a smaller association vs. larger association problem in my opinion. Skills are a critical part of the game and should be worked on constantly. Unfortunatley these rule changes will make teams spend more time on the PP, PK, and even 3 on 5 situations more than in the past which is kind of backwards, but hopefully teams will continue to work on their skills during practice.
The rule changes along with the coaches helmet issue was a lot to bite off in one year by USA and Minnesota hockey, time will tell.

MN Hockey has nothing to do with the new enforcement of the rules, its a USA Hockey's call.Common sense tells me that with in two years Minnesota hockey is going to take the game we have always loved and turn it into sort of a ringette format.
Blueliner, just curious what Elite II team you're associated with? The Elite II team that my son plays on has never reached the 15 penalty limit and as far as I know, we have yet to play against a team that had 15 or more in our games.
I agree 100% with you that the obstruction/interference calls are the most frustrating. This past weekend, for example, our team was called for an interferance penalty in the first 30 seconds of the game. Our defensmen angled the offensive player to the boards about dot high, pinched him into the boards and skated away with the puck. The only thing he used his stick for was to take the puck from the offensive player. Looked like a perfectly playered defensive coverage and takea way.
For the most part. I would say the kids are getting the point about the stickwork and interference and the number of penalties has decreased. It will take some time for the rest of the HS players to catch up to the Elite league players who have been playing for six weeks with the new enforcement. The youth players will get it too, but it will take awhile for them to figure it out as well as the coaches.
NEW Rules
RLStars, I am with the Section 6 team. I am surprised to hear that your team has not reached the 15 penalty mark, I really thought most of the teams had reached it. It has happened at most of the sites we have been at so far. Is your son with the West Metro team?
Sorry for including "all" teams in my statement. I know most have run into the problem, and just figured all have at somepoint. The one thing I have run into is that there has been a lack of consistency in calling one game with the new standards and then the next without. When the real season begins, hopefully this will not be the case because it can be too confusing to the the players. I think some of the problem is that not all of the officials have had their seminars yet.
As far as the interference calls, we had a similar situation as you listed but the puck had gone in the net off the goalies skate and we had not touched it, on the delayed penality. The outcome was no goal for us with 59 seconds on the clock to tie the game.

BL, yes, my son is on the West Metro team. I totally agree with you on the game to game inconsistancy. What seems to be the toughest part is that one thing is okay in the first game, and gets called in the second.
My son is also a level 3 official and just got done attending this years officiating seminar. He was told that there are over 7000 officials in Minnesota, so it only stands to reason that there is going to be inconsistancy among officials, just like there was before but on a smaller scale. As long as they all buy into the new enforcement of the rules (and they should), we will get back to the type of games (penalty number wise) that we had before, just without as much of the grabbing, hooking, holding and obstruction.
I don't know about you, but this passed weekend we had two very fast-paced, end to end, ever changing flow games that were very exciting to watch. It also helped that we walked away with three points.

new rules
I agree with BlueLiner that hooking is called WAY to much. We just had a game and we had 24 penalty min. 10 being hooking. Our coaches were pissed because they ref's were fat and called to many pennalties, all in which were the new pennalties being enforced!!!

I coach the peewee A team at Armstrong. I have seen quite a few penalties called thus far in the season. I do NOT have a problem with the "new" enforcement of the rules. I believe that it will be a major benefit to the sport IF the refs continue to call the game this way. Consistency is the most important thing from a reffing standpoint.
Nothing has enfuriated me more the last 2 season than the interference and the hooking. Coaches now will have to coach the fundamentals more. That being speed, skating agility, and positional play.
Two years from now, people will be talking about how much more entertaining the game is. Instead of complaing about legitamate penalties being called, that were never called before.

Lets state these are not new rules just new standards of old rules that have been in print but loosely enforced for a number of years. Best advice for the players reading is keep your feet moving, keep your hands to yourself and keep the stick down and use it to play the puck not to chop wood or hook. In short improve your skills. The new standards will not be going away and with that watch the skill level improve and the game will be getting faster and better.

New Calls
I think it is going to be worse for teams that didn't accept the new rules from the start. We played some scrimmages where teams weren't even trying. The funny thing is they were both District 2 teams.
